New iMacs

2008-04-28 Thread pweaver
Well the new iMacs have been announced as predicted. Plus the price
has dropped on the basic machine from A$1698 to $A1599. Too bad
they don't appear to have designed a better Mighty Mouse.

Cheers, Paul.

Yes he has formatted the HD into two pieces using Boot Camp Assistant

Ok so in Boot Camp when he originally set the partition he Used
non-fat 32 partitioning scheme which cannot be written to by MacOS 10
Without the use of a third-party application

> How do I change the permissions?

You cannot change the permissions

To be able to write to the Windows partition you would need to remove
the current partition using Boot Camp Then using Boot Camp You will
need to create a new partition using the fat 32 option then you'd need
to reinstall Windows

> Also I am not familiar with windows on MAC so I assume I will be able to use

Yes you would need to boot up in Windows and install them

> How do I initiate the Windows OS?

On Start-up hold down the option key Then when you see the drive
select menu Choose the Windows partition

> Itunes music library onto this drive And free up space on the OS HD.

As this section of the hard drive has been partitioned for Windows if
You're not going to use the Windows operating system in any way I
would recommend you removed the Windows partition scheme in boot camp
which will give you back all the Space

As your hard drive is currently broken up into two pieces one for
MacOS X and one for Windows

Re: Permission HD

2008-04-28 Thread Janis Lynn

Hi All

I just bought a used Macbook Core Duo 2 on EBAY in which the
previous owner seems to have formatted the HD into two. One formated
as OS and the other has Windows. The windows HD in info says " read
only" as I have been unable to copy any files onto that HD. How do I
change the permissions? Also I am not familiar with windows on MAC
so I assume I will be able to use windows apps if loaded onto this
HD? How do I initiate the Windows OS? Also since I do not have any
windows programs, I was thinking of loading my Itunes music library
onto this drive and free up space on the OS HD. Does anyone know if
there would be a problem doing this? Thanks for listening!

Well, it seams WAMUG has hit the big time. No longer can we hide in
our little corner of the internet, away from the degenerate sub-humans
of the world.

It seams that a harvesting email address was subscribed to the list to
gather email addresses. This is a task that generally requires a human
to accomplish, so their bots must be getting more sophisticated.

At any rate, I have banned the offending address from gathering the

2008-04-28 Thread Shay Telfer

Hi All

Not sure if this is a universal problem but my macbook pro
(purchased Jan 08 now with OSX 10.5.2) sometimes just doesnt wake up
after being asleep for an hour or all night. All I have is a black
screen for a half an hour in one case, but I can still hear a 'soft'
noise inside it. I usually just have to press the power button to
shut it down then restart.

Has anyone else had this happen and is there a fix?

I had a thought today that it might require a firmware upgrade perhaps?

Kind regards

chris

I'd ensure you've got all the firmware updates installed.

Are you sure it's not in Safe Sleep? Your MacBook will go into Safe
Sleep if its battery is low, ie it writes all of memory out to disk
and turns off. You won't be able to wake it from keyboard or mouse,
but pressing the power button will cause it to reload memory from
disk and start up where it left off.

Baseline G5 tower from the Australian store is AU$3999 while the one
from the US store is AU$2988 (after conversion using the calculator
program). Interestingly enough the similarly priced NVIDIA Quadro FX
5600 card as an extra also has about a AU$1000 difference.

I too have noticed this difference. It appears to become even
greater as you purchasing more expensive equipment. There was a
difference of more than AU$1000 between the baseline G5 towers. Of
course that doesn't take into account additional costs such as
payment for currency conversion, additional taxes and shipping but
with such a large difference it does make you wonder.

I'll post up a calculation when the Apple stores come back up.

Re: Oz Mac prices

2008-04-28 Thread Mark Secker

another things to consider too is
1: economies of scale,
Apple here are a "boutique" brand, Apple in the US are a
wholesale/retail enterprise (probably bigger than the whole home PC
business here).

The US market is huge, the volume of Macs sold there takes down the
marginal price (cost per unit) as the marginal cost of variables
like shipping/storage/ordering and fixed/semi fixed cost
(management/store rental) actually decreases for each additional
unit sold (up to a point where inefficiencies kick in).

2: charging what the market can afford - just as there's no point
selling to a market that isn't profitable (unless your marketing
department is driving for market place share dominance to archive
after market service/accessories profit) there's no real economic
sense in charging less than what the market will pay. Traditionally
in places like Australia and Europe consumers have been used to huge
duties & taxes on items like computers and home electrical goods. No
point for a company starting cutting price to charge lower, more
"realistic" prices if the market is willing to pay the extra margin,
if you drive your prices down without cutting costs even if you pick
up additional units you may loose profit. And when the competition
reacts then you might even find your self back to square one market
share wise but with you and every other competitor having lower net
profit.

I too have noticed this difference. It appears to become even
greater as you purchasing more expensive equipment. There was a
difference of more than AU$1000 between the baseline G5 towers. Of

Don't get too excited about US prices...only 3 states do NOT have a state

Hi Chris,

Have you got "Require password to wake this computer from sleep or
screen saver" activated in System Preferences > Security - General.
I had this activated and started to experience the black screen on
wake up on my MacBook Pro awhile back.
So Instead I turned on fast user switching and went to the login
window to lock the screen.

But, all is working as it should now since the last Firmware Update or
one of the other updates.

Hi
They still make a whelter out of it. The vendors in the States still
have their profit margin on it, and some States don't have additional
taxes.
I just bought a GPS in the States for (with postage) just a fraction
over $300AU, the recommended retail here was in excess of $850 and
bargain prices around $650. It don't add up!

That's almost double the US price!

I've heard an revised version of the iMac is imminent. Will the

And I suppose we can look at it from the flip side as well. When the dollar
wasn't so crash hot and changing I'm sure the margin went down when the
dollar changed the other way and wasn't worth as much, yet the price stayed
the same.
Swings and round-abouts I suppose. (Or however that saying goes)

There are state taxes to consider in US pricing. A friend who lives

Hi Kyle,

Now that's a handy tip! Might be a worthwhile exercise to turn into a
gui app, using either Applescript Studio or a simple XCode project.
Drop a text file onto an icon and it pumps out an audio file.

Hi Paul

One would think that the price would change with the imminent release of an
updated iMac. According to the latest rumour sites, that change should be
any day
But yes, with the way the exchange rate is at the moment,..there must be
some dollars going somewhere,... I know it's not in my pocket, :o(

Speech Synthesis Manager - Man Page
To find out what everything means in the example below Type into Terminal

man say

Example:

This example will convert a text document to a Audio file Which is
located on the desktop

say -v Victoria -o /Users/username/Desktop/Texttospeechoutput.aiff -f
/Users/username/Desktop/Texttospeechinput.txt
