Re: Who is getting an iPhone tomorrow?

2008-07-09 Thread Barb Zahari
Doesn't work .. I've tried restarting my very simple Nokia prepaid on
advice from a real Vodaphone person (not the dreaded Lara! :-) )

Never mind 3G coverage - I can't even get a decent Vodaphone signal for
plain vanilla mobile calls/text inside my small single-story house in
Bassendean!

Never had a problem with this - same phone - in the 3 years or so with
Tel$tra before changing to Vodaphone in April.

Not the phone itself, works fine in some areas.

I work in Midland and there is no 3g coverage from about Forrestfield

Re: International Roaming on Telstra Prepaid

2008-07-09 Thread Neil Houghton
Hehe

In my experience, Telstra shops don't know much about anything :)

Regarding overseas travel, when we went to Europe recently my other half got
a prepaid SIM card which was, I think, UK based - it worked through Italy,
Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, Czech Republic and Swizerland
and she could top it up on the go.

One annoyance was that it took a long time to connect - I think it phoned
back to the UK for each connection?

On a slightly different tack, re Janes comment:

> Quite an endless round
> if sim card swopping goes on when I travel!

I vaguely remember seeing on eBay:

1) mobile phones with 2 SIM card slots
2) SIM card adaptors to let you fit 2 SIM cards into 1 SIM card slot

I also seem to remember that there were different variations in how these
worked - I think with some only 1 card was active at a time and you could
select which one, whereas with others both worked for incoming calls and one
was selected for outgoing.

The main market seemed to be for people travelling - does anyone have any
experience with these ( & would the adaptors let you fit 2 SIMs into an
iPhone?!)

So much to learn... So few brain cells left!!

Cheers

Dubai

2008-07-09 Thread Jane Griffiths

Hi Steven

I really wish I could be of more help to you here, but unfortunately
my total knowledge of Dubai consists only of many hours spent in the
Emirates (very nice) lounge on my travels to the UK. I know someone
who travels to Dubai on business quite regularly and will ask him your
questions later today.

I do know that when in Dubai I have to use an Optus prepaid sim to
enable me to send text messages to Oz as the Telstra prepaid is
"banned" from doing so by the Dubai telecoms. Quite an endless round

Just going off on a rant here, but another thing that annoys me about
prepaids is that I can't receive picture texts (are they MMS??) from
international numbers. This is one of many questions I have for the
iPhone carriers.

Re: Who is getting an iPhone tomorrow?

2008-07-09 Thread Jane Griffiths

As much as I would like to, I won't be getting an iPhone tomorrow. I
feel I need more time to understand the intricacies of the various
carriers' plans.
I only have a pre-paid telstra sim in an unlocked phone (for use
overseas as well) at the moment and my mobile phone usage is very low,
so only the lowest cost plans would be of interest to me. I notice
that Optus offer an $80 unlocking of the iPhone on their pre-paid plan
so that might be tempting.
I will be going along to somewhere selling the iPhone tomorrow just to
have a look at one, as I must be one of the few Apple fans that has
actually never seen the real thing!

The answer is Yes, as long as you have .Mac Sync turned on. The
iDisk at .Mac will be updated according to the schedule you set in
the .Mac Sync System Preferences. Of course, even if you don't set
up a schedule you can still sync manually. Click the Check Box to

Peder,

Telstra posted its plans on 30 June as follow:

via Gizmodo

iPhone 3G will be available from Telstra on July 11 with a range of
specially designed Next G™ iPhone 3G plans that meet the needs of any
customer. The Next G iPhone 3G plans start at $30 per month with an
upfront cost of $279 for the 8GB model and $399 for the 16GB model.
Customers will receive the 8GB iPhone 3G model at no cost with the
$80 plan and either the 8GB or the 16GB model at no cost with plans
starting at $100 per month. All plans include free Wi-Fi access at
Telstra hotspots and require a 24-month contract.

iPhone - Vodafone press release!

2008-07-09 Thread stuart . evans

Hi all,

Well now it is official. Have a read of the press release...

Vodafone Australia today announced that Apple's highly anticipated
iPhone 3G will be available on a range of new caps that reflect
expected voice and data usage from launch on July 11. Vodafone has
also unveiled further network upgrade plans that will improve iPhone
3G performance in more areas of Australia.

Vodafone?s new iPhone 3G caps start at $69 per month for $310 credit,
on a 24-month contract, which can be applied to voice calls, text
messages and standard services, and up to 250MB of mobile data per
month.
Vodafone?s $69 iPhone 3G Cap requires customers to pay $189 outright
or $7.88 per month over 24 months for the 8GB model, and $309 or

December 2008. In addition Vodafone will add Enhanced Data for GSM
Environments (EDGE) technology to
its 2G 900 MHz sites throughout Australia to enhance the iPhone
experience for Vodafone customers in regional and rural areas.

Vodafone is expanding 3G coverage with its 900MHz and 2100MHz mobile
network in regional and rural Australia with Ericsson?s latest
hardware and software, which is rated to the 14.4Mbps maximum

I got this response

Your name server, at 203.55.230.104, appears vulnerable to DNS Cache Poisoning.
All requests came from the following source port: 32780

Requests seen for 0c9d51b96ebf.toorrr.com:
203.55.230.104:32780 TXID=51520
203.55.230.104:32780 TXID=57839

203.55.230.104:32780 TXID=61119
203.55.230.104:32780 TXID=15240

Interesting that Robert got 'seems to be OK'. Gives me hope that it
doesn't just say this to everyone.

I'm with iinet. Don't really understand waht this means, or if I need
to do anything about it.

cheers

Re: Critical flaw rocks the internet??

2008-07-09 Thread James Devenish
Hi,

For home users, the vulnerability lies with your ISP, and is thus out
of your control. It would affect anything (including mobile phones
with web browsing capability). There isn't much you can do abou it,
except changing your dialup or broadband settings to use a 'secure'
DNS server instead of your ISP's default.

The attack is probability based, meaning an attacker just has to keep
trying until they hit upon the winning numbers. Details of the problem
were published at least 5 years ago and it is part of a well-known and
extensive collection of problems known as 'cache poisining' attacks.
For this attack to work, DNS servers must either accept responses from
unrelated servers, or must allow unrelated servers to impersonate
legitimate servers on their network. Both of these come as a surprise
to me, so I'm not really sure how this has come to be. On the up side,
the SANS Insitute, which runs the 'Internet Storm Center' still rates
the overall internet threat at 'Green' despite this latest
vulnerability.

So, I did go to and found:

I checked from here and received a " seems to be ok " response ,
both this morning and again just now .

Neil may want to send his info to his ISP

DNS Checker

Recently, a significant threat to DNS, the system that translates
names you
can remember (such as www.doxpara.com) to numbers the Internet can
route

(66.240.226.139) was discovered, that would allow malicious people to
impersonate almost any website on the Internet. Software companies
across
the industry have quietly collaborated to simultaneously release
fixes for

all affected name servers. To find out if the DNS server you use is
vulnerable, click below.

So, I did click on the link and got the message:

Your name server, at 203.16.214.237, appears vulnerable to DNS Cache
Poisoning.
All requests came from the following source port: 33144Requests seen

203.16.214.237:33144 TXID=47019
203.16.214.237:33144 TXID=7310

However, all of this is a bit above my head and doesn't mean that
much to me
- is it something we (I?) should be worried about? The article makes
it all

sound pretty dire - but there is always lots of FUD in the media.

The DNS server is obviously not local - is this an ISSP specific
thing (I

use internode) or somewhere in the WA network or what?

Any of our more knowledgeable list members care to comment on the
realistic

risk level/ appropriate panic quotient?

Cheers

Neil
