Re: Virgin plan for iPhone - link to 3's plan

2008-07-31 Thread Glenn Nicholas
Not sure about 3 call plans. I only use their mobile broadband these days.

It is worth pointing out that Virgin Mobile are owned by Optus, and
use the Optus network. This is the subject of the Gizmodo article.
Recently 3 have also announced a way of using an unlocked iPhone on
their 3 network. But that is quite different to the Virgin/Optus
offer.

Glenn.

Re: Leopard Update Problems - hidden files not hidden? - FIXED!!

2008-07-31 Thread Neil Houghton
Ronni,

You are a deadset legend!

The Apple link was very interesting and really good because I could see that
others had had the same problem after upgrading.

Because of this, I was less worried that this was a symptom of a deeper
problem and more confident to just address the visibility issue.

Yes, I know that this doesn't necessarily mean that there ISN'T any other
problem (just because you aren't paranoid doesn't mean they AREN'T out to
get you!) - but I'm less worried, anyway!.

First try didn't work because SetFile wasn't found - so I had to install the
developer tools from the Leopard install disk. (So now I've got all sorts of
interesting things in my "Developer" folder!)

Ran all the SetFile commands except for mach_kernal (which wasn't visible
anyway on my machine) and (as per the discussion) everything except etc, tmp
& var became invisible straight away.

Deleting /Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices* and rebooting fixed
those. (as per another poster, I had more than 2 of these files but deleted
them all).

So now the only folders/files I can see at the hard drive level are the ones
I SHOULD see.

Thanks again, Ronni.

Cheers

Hi Martin,

Why is it you use the word "remote"?
Is it that you see little scope for watching local Free To Air and
instead you are looking to view content from elsewhere maybe?

If however you do want to "capture" and view your local Free To Air
with your Mac it sounds like you will have to address your reception
issues.
Just trying to to tune in with your Mac _might_ get you better
reception but I shouldn't think it would be a _lot_ better. I can't
really say :-)

There are many USB TV tuners for Macs and Elgato seem to be the standard.

Re: Creating a website for publishing family tree - suggestions

2008-07-31 Thread Neil Houghton
Hi Matt,

I can only comment on a couple of points:

Web Hosting:

Has the advantage that you can register your own domain name and host it
with a provider & if you change providers you can transfer your domain.

At present I pay the princely sum of AUD $13/year for possumology.com and $0
to host it with a free hosting account from servers australia - I haven't
put up a web-site to date, I'm just using it to manage my @possumology.com
email addresses. Though if I did have a website I would probably upgrade to
a paid hosting package with them (the free one has limited bandwidth - but,
hey it's free to get you in the door!) paid packages start at $9.95/month
but if you wanted to go this route, I would start off with the free package
(you still have to pay the domain registration but .com is only $13/year)

Check out their plans at

I have personally found them to be VERY customer friendly with good response
to any of my problems - and I aren't even paying for hosting yet!

FTP:
You don't really need to know about this with most hosting providers now
having a control panel that you log-onto which lets you upload files direct
from your computer. I set-up another website using this and it was really
easy.

For "How do I upload my website?" see:

I would recommend the "use the cPanel file manager" option.

They even have a bunch of video tutorials about how to use cPanel:

HTML vs MySQL:
First off - I have never personally used a Database-based web content
managemnent system -so others may correct what I say, but as I see it:

With HTML, the info for each page (ignoring style-sheets etc) is basically
coded into the file for each page - so if you change one bit of info that
appears on say 5 pages - then you have to re-write all five page files. Or,
in your case change it in Reunion, get it to re-create the website and
upload the relevant files.

With the MySQL system, I would imagine that the whole site is based on
templates (which don't change) and the PHP scripts retrieve the information
to display from the MySQL database. Keeping the site up to date therfore
becomes a matter of keeping the database updated - presumably TGN does this.

You probably need to have a play with both to see which you prefer.

HTH

Cheers

Neil

So I am totally confused. Does anyone on the list host a family tree
site? Anyone aware of any examples of family trees put up from
Australia?

Can anyone give me any recommendations as to the best way to go as
regards to the best way to get a site set up, should I get a
MobileMe account and use the 20GB to host the tree? I did notice on
MobileMe pricing that "An Individual subscription comes with 20GB of
combined email and file storage, 200GB of monthly data transfer and
full access to everything MobileMe has to offer"

Now am I correct in believing that once I have created a website and
loaded all the photo's, doc's etc. to it, that when someone goes to
the website and looks through it, downloads from it etc. that the
download would be on their account not on mine? The "200GB of
monthly data transfer" seems to say that it is all on my account?

Or should I go to a hosting provider? Any recommendations?

Thanks

Creating a website for publishing family tree - suggestions

2008-07-31 Thread Matt Falvey

Hi All.

I have nearly finished compiling my family tree using Reunion for
Mac. One of the distribution options is to create a website and
export the tree and all of the photo's, documents etc. to it. Reunion
can create a web folder using web reports saved in HTML and if I
use .Mac and iDisk (Which I think is now called MobileMe & iDisk) the
web folder can automatically be uploaded. If I don't use the iDisk
apparently I will need an FTP program to upload the files. (iWeb has
anyone used this for a family tree?)

I then read that a program called The Next Generation of Genealogical
Site Building V7 (TGN V7), "is a powerful way to manage and display
your genealogical data on the internet, all without generating a
single page of HTML. Instead, your information is stored in MySQL
database tables and dynamically displayed in attractive fashion with
PHP (a scripting language)"

I have no idea of the difference between HTML and MySQL, but the
websites constructed using TGN had a nicer appearance and seemed to
possess more options than the Reunion templates. Nor do I know what
FTP is. Then I read that there has been a massive problem with the
roll out of MobileMe.

So I am totally confused. Does anyone on the list host a family tree
site? Anyone aware of any examples of family trees put up from

Re: Leopard Update Problems - hidden files not hidden?

2008-07-31 Thread Ronda Brown

Progress so far:

1) SHOWING/HIDING HIDDEN FILES.

I checked out "Invisibles" but was a bit put off by some of the

set dotVisible to do shell script "defaults read com.apple.Finder
AppleShowAllFiles"
if dotVisible = "0" then
do shell script "defaults write com.apple.Finder
AppleShowAllFiles 1"

else
do shell script "defaults write com.apple.Finder
AppleShowAllFiles 0"

end if
tell application "Finder" to quit
delay 1
tell application "Finder" to activate

With the suggestion to save it as an application.

After Ronni's recent reply regarding applescript, I was quite keen
to give

this a try - so I created "Toggle visibility.app" - my first ever
application!

Unfortunately, it didn't initially work for me - I don't remember the
precise error message but it was something like it couldn't find a
com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles pair.

After a bit more searching I found this article:

and tried its simple terminal command of:

defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles YES

This worked a treat (you have to relaunch finder for it to take
effect) and

changing the YES to NO toggles the visibility back off.

And, interestingly, my application now works - I'm presuming that
when I
first tried it there was no "AppleShowAllFiles" to read but now
(after my
first terminal command wrote it) it can now find it to read and then
toggle

it.

So, all very interesting but back to the problem:

2) CHECK OF VISIBLE/HIDDEN FILES

I updated my old G5 iMac to 10.5.4 so I could do a direct comparison
of the

two machines both with the same Leopard version and noted:

A)there was one file on the G5 that was not on the INTEL:
"mach.sym" -

I'm assuming that this may be a PPC specific system file.

B) other than the two used added folders imported by Migration
assistant

there are two items on the INTEL that are not on the G5:
file ".com.apple.timemachine.supported (from old Mac)" and:
folder "Developer"
I'm not concerned with these items - the file is normally invisible
and is
obviously (as it says) a record from the previous Mac and the folder
is
presumably there because at some stage these developer tools were
installed

( I may have been playing - I don't remember!)

C) the following folders/aliases are on both machines but are
invisible on

the G5 and visible on the INTEL:
bin, cores, etc, private, sbin, tmp, usr, var, Volumes
THESE are the file I am concerned about why are they visible and how
do I

make them invisible!?

D) the following items which I had noted were visible folders on the
external backup are invisible on both machines but, whereas on the
external
backup they have standard folder icons, on both machines they have a
sort of
custom volume icon (like when you mount a disc image but with a grey
case

with a white outline of three men holding hands!): dev, home & net
Same on both machines so OK.

So... No duplicate files - just what I would expect to be there -
just that

the files in C) are not invisible like they should be!

Anybody got any further thoughts on this?

Hi Neil,

From

" fixed this problem by running:"

sudo /Developer/Tools/SetFile -a V /bin
sudo /Developer/Tools/SetFile -a V /cores
sudo /Developer/Tools/SetFile -P -a V /etc
sudo /Developer/Tools/SetFile -a V /mach_kernel
sudo /Developer/Tools/SetFile -a V /private
sudo /Developer/Tools/SetFile -a V /sbin
sudo /Developer/Tools/SetFile -P -a V /tmp
sudo /Developer/Tools/SetFile -a V /usr
sudo /Developer/Tools/SetFile -a V /Volumes
sudo /Developer/Tools/SetFile -P -a V /var

then deleting /Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices* (2 files) and
rebooting.

Most of the files/folders became invisible right after running
SetFile. The symbolic links (/etc, /tmp and /var) became invisible
after the reboot.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: Leopard Update Problems - hidden files not hidden?

2008-07-31 Thread Neil Houghton
Just one other thing on this.

I found this article:

Which says:

> After the new Leopard installation is complete, the Apple support doc suggests
> that users install the iMac Software Update 1.3 for Leopard. I asked Eriks to
> check whether Software Update flagged this update but it didn¹t; so be sure to
> install the update if you have a new 20-inch and 24-inch Late 2007 model iMac.
> The note said the problem machines have either a 2GHZ, 2.4GHz and 2.8GHz
> processor.

And also references:

Although I had solved the log-in problem, the Apple article said the iMac
Software Update 1.3 for Leopard WAS recommended for my machine and since the
Zdnet article said that Software Update wouldn't flag it (why not!!) I went
ahead and downloaded and installed it. I then re-ran the 10.5.4 combo
updater.

None of this seems to have had any effect!!

Cheers
