Research

2008-08-02 Thread Nathalie Collins

Hello everyone:

I am a long time WAMUG member and am currently working on a PhD in
Customer Evangelism at UWA with Associate Professor Jamie Murphy.

Of course, Apple and MUGs can be a great focus for my research. I
would like to do some data gathering around WAMUG, specifically
relating to analysing the mailing list threads and contributions.

When writing up my research I would not include anyone's name or any
data which would lead to revealing the participant's identity. The
papers I write can be made available to anyone who wishes to see them.
I can email the list when they are ready if you would like.

Please let me know if you have any concerns.

Re: iPhone question ?

2008-08-02 Thread Greg Bell
3G = Use battery mondo quickly. I need to charge mine about every
second day. However it does charge reasonably quickly i.e. around
90mins from flat, off my Mac Mini's USB port. I don't bother with the
external charger, though I think I may invest in a car charger for
weekend charging in the car.

My previous phone lasted for at least 3 weeks between charges. So the
two-daily charging routine is a bit of a bummer, but the phone's
abilities more than make up for it and I figure Apple will improve
the battery life with time.

Hope this helps

2 x Lime iMacs free to a good home

2008-08-02 Thread Shay Telfer

Hi...

I've got two tray load Lime iMacs free to a good home.

Preference to anyone who wants both of them.

These are 266MHz G3's with 288MB of RAM and a 6Gb HD

Pick up today from Innaloo preferred, but other options negotiable.

Includes original 'hockey-puck' mouse, keyboard and power cable.

Have not been able to locate the original install disks though :(

Otherwise it's freecycle then recycling.

Thanks,
Shay

Stephen, the iPhone is not a simple phone, it is a mini computer. My
iPhone gets far more use doing non-phone things than I ever used my
old phones for and hence its battery gets used up more rapidly. My
more recent Windows Mobile PDA-phones though not 3G would still would
also chew through the battery when I used them for long stretches
reading ebooks or GPS etc.

Because the iPhone does even more using the far faster (and more
battery hungry) HSDPA 3G standard, it is to be expected that the
battery ends up lasting that much less time. For those times you
really need to stretch the battery life out, turning off 3G doubles
your battery life and turning off wifi increases it even further and
restricting your GPS usage also helps.

The iPhone 3G actually has the best battery life of just about any
other 3G phone as PCWorld found:

http://www.pcworld.com/article/148348/article.html

(only slower EVDO Blackberry phones had slightly better battery life)

If my battery is getting low after too much web browsing or Google
Maps or ebook reading (or too many games!), I just plug the USB cable
in when I'm at work or at home and will at some point also get a car
charger for long trips. You can also buy external battery packs like
the Belkin or JuicePack iPhone battery pack etc.

http://fastmac.com/iv.php

So if you want a phone that will take advantage of Telstra's NextG 3G
network that you're currently on, the iPhone is an absolutely first-
class choice.

Don't let battery life be what stands between you and an iPhone.

Re: iPhone question ?

2008-08-02 Thread Ray Forma

Stephen,

Phones that work on currently superior HSDPA/UMTS networks, such as
Telstra's in Australia, use energy in counterintuitive ways. My LG
TU550 gives me wider reception in country fringe areas than any other
handheld with which I have compared it, with about a two day battery
life on fringes with minimal phone/data use.

However, when I am out of range the battery lasts for about 11 hours
only! Must be doing lots of frantic signal searching at full
transmitter power across the 4 frequency bands and 4 systems that the
phone is capable of.

The moral of the story is that the more capability your phone has,
and the more capable the network you use, the less will be the
battery life, unless there is a big breakthrough in battery
technology. I don't think that will happen at a reasonable price in
the next few years.

When travelling in my vehicle, I have the phone continually plugged
into a car charger, so battery drain is no problem. Bushwalking is a
different matter, when I have the phone switched off except during
pre-arranged timeslots.

If you have a UMTS-capable phone, and plan to travel overseas, the
following may be helpful:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Deployed_UMTS_networks

Remember that old rule-of-thumb; the higher the frequency, the
shorter and more unpredictable the reception pattern.
