Lost/Stolen: White 16Gb iPhone

2008-12-18 Thread Paul Mulroney

Hi Everyone,

My son has lost his white 16Gb iPhone at Hoyts in Carousel. When he
discovered he had lost it, he went back and searched the cinema with
staff, and couldn't find it.

If you happen to see a white iPhone on ebay or wherever going cheap,
can you check the serial number? It's 88827UJN1R4

BTW, can we disable the phone remotely? It'd be good to brick the
phone if possible ...

Thanks in advance,
Paul.

This office will close on Tuesday 23 December at 4.00pm and will open
again on Monday 5 January 2009 at 8.00am WST. We wish you a happy
festive season

USB Ethernet - 10.5.6 - Warning

2008-12-18 Thread David Moyle
Hey all

Warning - If you use an Apple Ethernet adapter to get around a broken
port etc on any PPC machine updating will 10.5.6 will leave you
stuck. Still unsure whether its related to a glitch or a deliberate
attempt on Apple's behalf.

Symptoms will include long boot times, not able to access Network
panel in System Preferences and obvisouly.. no network activity on
that interface! =)

Cheers
Thanks, David Moyle

Re: AM/FM radio for iPhone

2008-12-18 Thread Hugh Griffiths
Am radio add ons are not generally available for portable devices due to the
need for a relatively large, heavy and cumbersome aerial. If you look at most
AM capable transistor radios, their form factor is due to the size of the
aerial. For FM receivers the headphone cable can act as the aerial. It also
generally viewed by the broadcasters that AM is an inferior broadcast mechanism
( although it has much better range than FM)

A 10.5.6 glitch

2008-12-18 Thread Severin Crisp
Since upgrading to 10.5.6, Word and Excel from Office 2008, but of
which are set as Startup Items with Hide checked, no longer Hide
automatically but display an open blank document. Unchecking and
rechecking the box makes no difference. A number of other items, set
similarly, behave as they should. Has anyone else encountered this?
I believe it may be related to the annoying habit that both Word and
Excel have of always opening a blank document when I bring them up.

Hi Severin,

By any chance, do you have the option to "Show icon preview" checked?
Try command-j and deactivate that option to get standard Office icons.

You don't necessarily need a hardware add-on to receive AM radio on
your iPhone when you are in cell or wifi range.

Some AM radio stations are already included on many of the streaming
radio aggregators available on the App Store for the iPhone and iPod
Touch.

You just need to lobby your favourite AM station to start streaming
their programs out onto the internet if they don't already and then
get these aggregators to pick them up. Some of the streaming radio
aggregator apps available include: Stitcher Radio (Free and works
with thousands of radio stations including all 5 BBC Radio stations
plus Worldview etc), Tuner, FlyCast (free and works with 25,000
stations in the Shoutcast network) etc.

ps. SimCity is now available on the App Store and it plays amazingly
well on the iPhone. It is not a cut-down mobile version but rather
the full desktop SimCity 3000.

Also, check out WebMD a free app for diagnosing health complaints
(click on the part of the body that ails you and choose symptoms, see
possible causes, treatments etc).

Nuther fun one is the app called Television. Allows you to view the
latest on-demand video slots from dozens of TV channels including CNN,
National Geographic, Discovery Channel, BBC, ABC News (Australia),

Phone Aid - a first aid program that talks you through CPR and other
treatments with voice recordings so you don't have to look at the
phone and it keeps you in time.

Road trip - Free fuel economy app.

With the rich apps now out, no one has any excuse to be bored if you
have an iPhone or iPod touch on you.

Unable to restart a Mac G4 running tiger osx.

2008-12-18 Thread Malcolm McCallum

Hello
I have a Mac G4 500 (2000 model) running the latest version of OS X
Tiger
I recently downloaded a security update this week which was about 70
megs

and then I was told to restart.
My g4 gets to the blue screen with the blue progress bar which gets
right

to the end and then stays there for hours on end.
I have tried rebooting with the shift key down, and also disconnecting
the power and depressing the small button on the mother board
to no avail.
Is anybody able to assist please.
My telephone number is 0409 176 611
or you can reach me at
peter.mccal...@police.wa.gov.au
Thankyou for any assistance you may be able to offer.

Re: A 10.5.6 glitch

2008-12-18 Thread Severin Crisp

Hi Ronni
This sounds interesting but I am puzzled. Is command-j in the Finder
or Word or Excel? I have tried them all and nothing seems to change.

Hi Severin,

By any chance, do you have the option to "Show icon preview" checked?
Try command-j and deactivate that option to get standard Office icons.

Hi Severin,

In Finder click once to highlight your Word or Excel blank icon,
then Command-j & it will bring up a dialogue box with "Show icons"
"Show icon Preview" etc.

Re: A 10.5.6 glitch

2008-12-18 Thread Ronda Brown

Severin,

Hmm, I'm not sure then. Have you tried deleting Word & Excel from your
System Preferences > Accounts - Login Items and then re-adding them?

You could try downloading and applying the standalone OS X 10.5.6
"Combo" update.
"This edition includes all updated files since the release of 10.5.0,
and as such will ensure all files are properly accounted for in the
system.
It is recommended that users update by downloading the combo update
and then boot into Safe mode.
When in Safe mode, run a permissions fix and drive check using Disk
Utility, and install once those are completed."

Other than that, I'm stuck!

Do u have the tiger system disk ? ( must be Tiger )

Get it in and start up from it ,
( Power up with the disk loaded and hold down the C key , or hold down
the option key and then select the disk)

When it loads , do NOT start the instal , instead look in the drop
down menu's for Disk Utility.

Start Disk utility and run " Repair Permissions" on your drive .

See if that helps ?

Severin,

In regard to your query above about Word & Excel always opening a
blank document on starting the application.

The default worksheet works in the same way as Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, TextEdit, and other applications to provide a starting
document, but there are some preferences you can set to get a
different startup experience.

Go to Excel->Preferences, to the General preferences, you can turn on
the checkbox for "Open Project Gallery when application opens", then
the Project Gallery window will open first thing when you launch
Excel, and you can access recently used files in the "Recent" tab,
open a new file from a template, or use the "Open Other..." button to
choose a file to open.

If you are generally working on a key workbook or set of workbooks at
any one time, you can have these files open automatically each time
you launch Excel. Go to Excel->Preferences, to the General
preferences, and find the setting, "At startup, open all files in:".
Click the Choose button and you can select a file folder. All the
documents in the folder that Excel can parse will open each time you
launch, so be aware that text files, all workbooks, and other files
will be opened.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: A 10.5.6 glitch

2008-12-18 Thread Severin Crisp
Fixed. I removed Word and Excel from the Startup items then put them
back in again and all is now fine apart from a new document window
whenever I bring up Word or Excel (active) from the dock. I find the
"Open Recent" is my preferred start point; for other documents I go to
my Templates, all accessible from an alias in the dock.

At least I do not have those annoying open documents after startup.
Enjoy this hotter day, my thermometer says 24C right now but it felt
hotter than that.
