Get used to it Philip. The last PPC-based Mac rolled off the
production line years ago now, and I don't think Apple have any
inclination of returning to PPC. The sooner they can force people
to go Intel, the more likely we are going to see a much slimmer OS X

Hi Philip,

Sorry mate, I agree with Rod here ;-).
Snow Leopard improves on Leopard. Snow Leopard is a sturdier, faster
version of Leopard. It taps Into the Mac's Core Power.
Snow Leopard promises to give you back 6GB of storage—cutting out all
the code for PowerPC-based Macs.
Snow Leopard is more intelligent than its predecessors in taking
advantage of hardware resources available to drive system performance.

Etc etc

Nice, but I think its a product that very few people want (other
than yourself of course!). You still have to plug it in to a
computer to upload videos. The new iPhone does that through wifi,
and Nokias running S60 can do that over wifi or 3g using services
such as Qik (which is now bundled with all new N97s). And anyone
serious about video will buy a proper camera. Which leaves this
product in a kind of no mans land. A few online journos I have seen
are using Qik for live streaming, or some just use the video
function of a still camera (bloggers fave these days!).

It would have cleaned up 5 years ago, but the convergence of
products into phones these days and the high quality/low cost of
better video cameras makes me think the Flip won't be a big seller.

It's probably not too bad for capturing “quick and dirty” video, that
you want to rush onto YouTube.

Also Flip creates an AVI file that must be converted to work with
iTunes and your iPod.

Apple could improve on Flip Video. They could put a camera and
microphone in the iPod touch. Now that would be something!

Re: Photo albums et al

2009-06-15 Thread Neil Houghton
Hi Laura,

I like to have both Character Palette and Keyboard Viewer turned on in
System Preferences International - Input Menu.

I find Keyboard Viewer is useful to see how the different modifier keys
work for character selection and to check key combinations for just typing
things (like your Shift+Option+K =  )

For tracking down obscure symbols though you can't beat Character Palette

You also find that there are a lot of different options which limit or
expand the characters shown.

I don't really remember if Tiger was that different to Leopard but my setup
to find the ⌘ was:

View: Set to All Characters - (View menu in top left of window)
Display set to by Category (options just below view menu)

Then in left pane open Symbols category which displays various Symbols
sub-categories - select Technical Symbols and (for me) ⌘ is at the start
of the third line of displayed symbols.

If you had the view menu set to,say, Roman rather than All Characters
you would find that you had much less options to choose from and Technical
Symbols would not be available.

Cheers

Re: Odd Time Machine error message

2009-06-15 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi Dennis,

For each backup that TM performs, it adds about 20% for workspace.

I don't understand this. 20% of what?

TM adds about 20% for padding for workspace it needs on the TM disk.
So if you are backing up 200GB + 20% workspace = $240GB

I am happy to format the destination and start again (I keep a
SuperDuper backup off site).

   But... what is the problem?

   Dennis.

Hello Dennis,

You don't mention what size your internal harddrive is what size
the external drive you are backing up to is?

The internal drive is 300GB and the destination is 500GB but that is
really not an issue. TimeMachine has been working since January
without problems and is working still.

I got that one error message that had the required size of 1GB but
an available size four times that size. And the Finder reported
twice as much again.

For each backup that TM performs, it adds about 20% for workspace.

I don't understand this. 20% of what?

The recommended size of a TM drive is at least 2x to 3x the size of
the internal drive.

Cheers,
Ronni

I just had a thought (dosen't happen often)
If the destination is full and TimeMachine delets the oldest backup
then there is a potential increase in available space on the
destination so that might explain the larger Finder report but the
initial TimeMachine error still seemed to want less than what it
said was there. Why would that be a problem?

This is for interest only as all seems to be working fine now.

Dennis.

Perhaps one that lasts a bit longer than the couple of years I got
out of this one a Pioneer DVR-111D.

Suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks

So Brian , Is it just the burner that is in trouble ? Is it possible
to open the case

remove the burner and instal another ?

Yeasr old , so it will most likely be an IDE or Eide connection and
protocol ,
so you would need the same to replace it ... not a Sata ... which are
all the latest version burners .

Some of the IDE are still available but you need to shop around

Pioneer are hard to find , but it would not have to be that brand.

I might know where to try .. mail off list if you are interested .

Typical price would be around $35 in Perth

Apart from certain windows-specific documents created by the system, I
have no data actually stored in my Virtual Machine. I interact
completely with my Mac data via shared folders, and I share the Mac's
internet connection. Although this strictly violates the Wikipedia
definition of sandboxing, the fundamental incompatibility between
Windows and Mac OS X is also part of the sandbox, and also does not
strictly fit the definition.

The main reasons for doing this are, quite frankly, convenience. If,
for some reason, my Virtual Machine dies, I can simply ditch it and
create a new one without missing a single byte of data. It also means
that I don't have to mess around trying to convince Windows to break
through the sandbox to connect to the internet - Parallels handles it
for me. I can also use my Mac's printer without having to install the
Windows drivers. The list goes on.

As far as malware goes, the vast bulk of this is coming in on email
attachments and on the back of malicious websites. As I do not read
email in Windows, and my use of the Internet in Windows is restricted
to the occasional software download from well-known sites, the chance
of contracting even Windows malware is minimal. Even then, I tend to
use Safari instead of Internet Explorer just to avoid the diabolical
Active X. Not only that, most, if not all malware currently in
circulation is attacking things like Windows System files and Registry
entries, so even if some of this stuff does leak though to the Mac
side, it's not going to do anything.

I do have AVG installed (because it's unintelligent to run Windows
without SOME sort of virus protection running) but it's more of a
distracting nuisance than anything.

I tell my students that command+tab was one of the few things the
Mac stole from the windows environment.

 Regards,

You should enlarge on that by explaining that although they copied the
idea, they also improved it. For example, with the cmd-Tab windows
open, you can select any icon on it and use cmd-Q to tell that
application tt quit without actually having to bring that app to the
front. You can also use your mouse to select the icons instead of
tabbing through them. This is handy when you have a lot of apps running.

Microsoft's implementation is downright boring in comparison.

Hi Merv,

It's still included at the moment, so assuming that this option
carries through to the production release, then, yes, Rosetta will

You must add it in Customize Options.

Hello Barry,

When this happens, with the drive connected and powered open Disk

If the drive is listed in the left side list then select the volume

Why it has suddenly arisen, I have no idea.
Did it arise after doing an update?
A security update, or OS, or application update?

There has to be a reason why it has just started to have this problem.
Does the Firewire Drive go to sleep and perhaps it is not waking when
the computer wakes in the morning?

Hi Ronni,

Thanks, that's just what I needed. I'd forgotten all about the Applications
bit of system profiler.

It looks like, for me, the only PPC only apps that I use a lot are the
Canoscan Toolbox scanner software and MS Office 2004.

Canoscan would not be that big a problem - I'd probably use it as an excuse
to buy a new scanner :)

Unfortunately Office 2004 is a must-have for me at present, I have lots of
Excel spreadsheets with macros so can't upgrade to Office 2008.

Hopefully, Snow Leopard will keep it's Rosetta support.

Cheers

Hi Neil,

When you upgraded from Tiger to Leopard did you remember to delete the
'Mac OS 9 /System Folder (not to be confused with /System, which is an
essential part of Mac OS X)?
Also delete the /Applications (Mac OS 9) folder— again, not to be
confused with Mac OS X’s /Applications folder?

You shouldn't have anything Classic left on your Intel computer.

printer presets - b w

I think previously to upgrading to Leopard, I could create various
printer presets such as

black and white,
1200 dpi
A3

where has that creation capability gone, I don't seem to be able to
find it. I have these setup on my MacPro ( now has 10.5.6) , and want
the same setup on the Macbook ( came with 10.5.x)

If I recall Previously under colour matching there was colour sync
with the b w, greyscale etc options, they don't seem to be their
now,

any ideas?

thanks in advance.

Thanks Ronni - that is reassuring.

Rosetta is still there in the latest build of 10.6, but it's
not
installed by default.
You must add it in Customize Options.

Word 2008

2009-06-15 Thread Severin Crisp
Since installing the recent update to Office 2008 I have lost the bar
across the bottom of documents with the dictionary icon, page count
etc. This happened once before a long time ago and I can not for the
life of me get it back!

Help a forgetful old guy please!
