Hi Walter,

If you haven't copied any iPhoto Library folders from another (newer)
version, then your photo library likely has some minor corruption.
1. Rebuild the photo database by starting iPhoto while holding the
shift+option keys.
2. Don't release them until you're prompted to confirm the intent to
rebuild.

3. Click "Yes", then click "Save".

Let us know if that corrects your problem please.

Cheers,
Ronni

new macbookpro ?

2009-06-27 Thread Roger Kortas

Hi Guys

I got my new Macbookpro on Friday its a 2.8Ghz 15" model, its very
nice but seems slow compared to my old 2.4Ghz!

I am using Handbrake to digitise all my DVD's and it seems much faster
on last years 2.4 model, I am going to do a test with the same DVD on
both today. It just finished on the new one and took 2hrs and 34
minutes which seems slow!!

Does anyone have a new model if so what do they think of it? speed
wise that is?

I have a firewire 800 drive which I will try on it a little later and
see if its faster using that.

Hi Glenn,

Do you have Quicktime Pro? QT Pro will convert to FLV (Flash Video)

Hi Glenn,

Just a bit more information for you. If the Quicktime .mov is H.264 it
can be used as a flv.
If your going to the web you can just change the extension from .mov
to .flv. Or you can just keep the .mov extension.
Most flash players if not all will play a H.264.mov without changing
the extension to .flv.

If you don't have Quicktime Pro, or if you are using Quicktime Pro 7
on an Intel Computer (as I've found now using Intel I cannot export to
FLV using QTPro7, you can on a PPC).

"On Intel-based Macs the option to export to FLV will not be available
in QuickTime Pro (or other applications that use QuickTime as their
exporter, such as Final Cut Pro).

The Flash 8 QuickTime exporter plug-in (FLV.component) is not a
Universal Binary. As a result QuickTime cannot 'see' it, and the
export will not be available. This issue only effects Flash 8 and
earlier. The Flash CS3 Professional exporter is a Universal Binary."
Apparently to resolve this issue you can set QuickTime Player to run
in Rosetta mode, but I have not tried this (as yet).

But, If you want a FREE Video Converter for Mac, I found this
Application and tried it out and it converted a Quicktime .mov to flv
successfully.

"Prism Video Converter Software
Convert AVI, MP4, WMV, MOV, FLV and many other video file formats
• Convert or compress video files within minutes of downloading.
	• Universal video converter supporting all popular formats including
DVD files.
	• Includes a batch converter to convert thousands of video files in
one go.
Prism is a free video converter for Windows and Mac. It can convert
video files from avi, wmv, 3gp, mov, flv and more into avi, mov, asf,
wmv, mp4, 3gp and others.

It can also convert DVD discs to your hard drive or compress video
files to reduce size."

There is a version for Intel & a version for PPC, make sure you
download the correct one for your system.

There is the download link for Intel Mac & PPC Mac at the bottom of
the page from the link below.

Audio output gain adjustment

2009-06-27 Thread James Devenish
Hi,

I want to be able to reduce the output volume of an external USB sound
device below the lowest volume available in the system Sound
preference. I imagine the way to do this is to filter all output
signal to reduce the amplitude. Does anyone know of a free, simple,
gain-adjustment output filter that's Leopard/Intel compatible? E.g., a
HAL plug-in.

Hi David,

Try This;

http://www.maxon.com.au/products_ethernet_docking_station_overview.php

It is made by Maxon to share NextG USB modems of all varieties. You can see
a picture of a BP3-USB docked to it.

We can supply it to you, but someone local to you may have it in stock.
Around $139-$149.

Cheers,
Stuart

Telstra's basic response was he would have to break contract ($$)

Hi David

Might not be a "solution", but another possibility would be to have it
plugged into one computer, then using Internet Sharing (System
Preferences/Sharing). You can then turn on Sharing and set it up to share
the internet.
It would read something like..
Share your connection from: "Aircard"
To computers using: "Airport". (Tick box)

This would then bring the internet in from the BP3-USB and share it back out
via Airport.
Downside would be that the sharing computer would have to be on all the time
that others want access.
But you could set it up with something like:
Screen to go to sleep after x minutes but the computer to go to sleep never.
Therefore the computer would always stay on, but when not being used the
screen would go to sleep.

Not a perfect solution, but just another option if nothing else can be
found.

Hope that helps.

Kind Regard
Daniel

Telstra Wireless Internet - Help Options

2009-06-27 Thread David Moyle
Evening all,

Hope I can get some advice for a friend.

He is currently on a Telstra Wireless Internet Plan, the device that was
supplied to him was a Maxon BP3-USB.

His intention is to take it with him and use it in his laptop but also use it
to provide access to the two/three computers at his house. As a solution to
this we investigated a NetGear MBR624GU but unfortunately this Maxon model
isn't supported. Presumely this is because it requires a computer to be
'intelligent' and connect to the network.

As a possible solution we figured we might be able to get the plan converted
and a Sierra Wireless AC880U supplied as an alternative device.
Telstra's basic response was he would have to break contract ($$) and then get
a new contract but there was no guarantee that they could provide the Sierra as
its not made or stocked any more.

The other solution Telstra said was to purchase their equivalent of the NetGear
but this removes the powerless, mobility feature.

Any suggestions or thoughts?

Cheers

this now makes a B & W file which can be printed .

To me this has create a number of extra steps that is poor GUI -
and contrary to "Apples ease of use".

BTW in my situation, I often create line drawings which have
coloured lines, and I need to print them out as solid black lines
( which make it easier to see whilst I for trace over with my
pen). The greyscale often tens to make the lines light dots
rather than a solid black line, which then is hard to see through
the tracing paper.

Sounds like another Automator project on the boil...

thats what I was thinking as well, I might have a go at it today.

I have had a look into Automator , is there a print action? , I
can't find it if there is one.

Hi Gary,

The default actions should be in the /System/Library/Automator folder.
There is a "Print Workflow.definition"
You would need to create a Automator workflow to suit your requirements.

I still think you are better off setting up & saving a "Custom Print
Preset" for "Black & White" printing.

Looking at your png at the link below:

Where you have "ColorSync" selected, under "Profile" (where you have
Automatic selected) I have "Other Profiles" & if I scroll under "Other
Profiles" I have "Black & White".

I have this setting saved as a Preset named "Black & White".

Now, these settings are "Printer Dependent" (i.e you don't have the
same settings for all makes of Printers, they vary). So you might not
have Black & White.

I take it you have a Lexmark E321?
Try:
1. Where you have Profile: Automatic ... use the arrows and see if you
have "Quality 1" as an option.

2. If you do Select "Quality 1" - set the Resolution field to 1200 dpi.
3. Then select "Color" (still in the sublist) and set the Color
Correction field to "Manual".
4. Finally go to the "Manual Color" in the sublist and set all 3 of
the RGB fields (Image, Text and Graphics) to "Display - True Black".

After doing all these settings, go to the Preset Field pulldown and
select "Save As" ... Give this custom preset a name "Black and White".

This way you can recall this preset and all the settings easily.
For color you can just go back to the Standard preset.

Try your preset "Black & White" if it doesn't do what you want, just
delete it.

Cheers,
Ronni
