Re: VirtualBox
Hi Virtual Box users Have a great deal of success with VB, almost to the point that I feel it gives Parallels for 'a run' and its free. The main sticking point is the USB problems, but it look like we are not the only ones having this problem. The VB forum has a bit to say about it at: http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=8t=22186 Until this gets resolved, shall continue to use it with my music software and keep an eye on the forum. For my purposes, can copy the USB stick to a Mac folder - a simple task. Thanks to those who raised the Virtual Machine and provided details and help. cheers ... Have been able to play music on the VM (Win XP) system in programs like Audacity (running in the VM) and it worked fine, even while doing heavy internet access on the iMac. Couldn't do that on Parallels - it would work, but little clicks would appear in the sound. Now have the cursor working well (ie, no need to press any keys to swap between iMac VM), and shared folders works well. As you say, USB folders is a bit flakey. In desperation, I have resorted to reading the manual that came with the download. Initial impressions is that there is some lower level stuff I need to do, but I get the impression that the manual may be an older version to the software that I have. Screen images etc are different, and things that are supposed to be on menus are not there. This is particularly true of the VirtualBox Manager, which I'm having difficulty activating. (I need it to increase RAM allocation so I can try seamless mode). There is something about USB handling to in the VB Manager as well. So I'll take time out to read the manual carefully. Regular backups are a MUST I will post to WAMUG list ... when I find a little time ;-) My Backup Strategy which involves having daily Archive weekly Bootable backups. The New iPhoto Library you have created is working correctly? 2. But, you now need to get your Original Photos from the Back Up Library? If this is correct. 3. Go into the Back Up iPhoto Library and find the Originals Folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the NEW iPhoto Window and it will create them in the new Library. 4. Quit iPhoto 5. Relaunch iPhoto and let us know if everything is OK. If you had made changes to photos in the old backup Library, you might then be able to bring the Modified folder across. Once you are satisfied the new iPhoto Library is functioning correctly delete the old iPhoto Library and MAKE A BACKUP of the New iPhoto Library. But, don't delete it until you are sure. -- Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos. Put it this way. Go to your Pictures Folder. If it's in the iPhoto Library Folder leave it alone. -- Cheers, Ronni On 23/09/2009, at 11:40 AM, mince and pud wrote: Hi Ronni Hm the iphoto outlook is about as sunny as the weather in the hills this morning. I have at least learned a few things... I deleted the preference file which gave me a brand new library. Imported some pics and watched a finder window while it did its stuff - sure enough a folder called 2001 is created within Imports and all the files go into it. But when it has finished, Imports folder disappears and the images move to Data 2009 Roll 1 which is as it should be. This is the bit my library has forgotten how to do. Unfortunately when I pointed iphoto at the backup library it has the same problem. I had imported these last few rolls without opening any images and as the thumbnails were fine - at first - didn't know anything was amiss until the thumbs subsequently vanished. 2 different cameras used so it's not the memory card I have not been rummaging around in the library. I know that There be Dragons... So I suppose the question is - is there a painless way of dragging the pictures in the old, corrupt library into the shiny new, working one, bearing in mind the dangers of rummaging? Your thoughts welcome best alastair On 22 Sep 2009, at 14:10, Ronda Brown wrote: Hi Alastair, Rebuilding the iPhoto Database didn't work. It's looking like the library database, Library6.iPhoto could be corrupted, or a file is. Have you tried deleting the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file,or moving it to your desktop ? Quit iPhoto before you do, then locate it in Home Library Preferences - com.apple.iPhoto.plist drag it to your desktop or trash (but don't empty the trash yet). Then restart your computer Then relaunch iPhoto 1. The backup iPhoto Library you say you have, was that working correctly? You might have to revert back to this backup. 2. Is it only since you have tried to import these new rolls into iPhoto that things have gone
Backup Strategy
Hello WAMUG people serious about protecting the Data on your Computer/s, Someone on WAMUG Mailing list some time ago asked if I would post how I Backup and protect myself from loss of Data. Here is a brief outline on my Backup Strategy: BACKUP STRATEGY The computer I am regularly backing up is an Intel machine (17 MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz / 4GB / 800MHz / 500GB) My External Firewire Drives are formatted: Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Partition Map Scheme: GUID Partition Table - (for bootability on Intel- based Macs) If you are backing up a PowerPC (PPC) machine you would format your External Firewire Drive/s: Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Partition Map Scheme: APM Partition Table - (for bootability on PowerPC-based Macs) I have been using Déjà Vu since purchasing it in 2002 to perform my scheduled daily backups of my Home Directory folder and scheduled weekly Bootable Clone of my System Disk (Hard Drive). Déjà Vu is a preference pane that lives in your System Preferences, and it allows you to schedule unattended backups of important folders, and Clone your entire system. As it has never let me down I continue using it. http://www.propagandaprod.com/dejavu.html You might prefer to use Time Machine (which is Free) for Archives and another application like Carbon Copy Cloner http:// www.bombich.com/ or SuperDuper http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html . Purchased registered copy of these can do scheduled backups. I use SuperDuper (purchased copy) to Clone other peoples computer Systems before I work on them, just in case something goes terribly wrong. NB: Backups are a MUST! Scheduled Backups are VITAL! It is too easy to forget to backup if you have not scheduled your backup application to regularly backup. The time you don't have a current backup, is the time most likely for something to go wrong and Yikes you have lost important data. That Video Project or Work Project you have been working on for weeks, or all your photos, your music files. I know this from experience! I was devastated when I had forgotten to backup and lost very important Video files I had been working on. After this happened I started using Scheduled daily backup of my Home Directory (Folder). Peace of Mind is far better then Loss of Mind due to Loss of Data! My Backup Strategy is: Déjà Vu backs up my Home folder to a Drobo which holds 4 - 1TB SATA drives (every night …) Déjà Vu backs up my Home folder to a 160GB SATA portable drive that lives in my car (every night …) For security this drive is password protected. Déjà Vu does a bootable Clone of my Startup Volume - [HD] to a 1TB External Firewire Drive (every week …) I have an extra off-site backup (Bootable Cloned HD by SuperDuper) on a 1TB External Firewire Drive at a relative's. This is updated every 1-2 mths I have another 120GB SATA Portable Drive that I use to backup files on other peoples computers before I work on them. Basically a good Backup Strategy consists of three parts: 1. Use Time Machine or another backup application to store Archives. Use your backup application to update your Archives incrementally (copying only new or changed files each time) at least Daily. 2. Create a Bootable backup Clone (Duplicate) of your Startup Volume. Use your backup application to update the Clone weekly. 3. Store at least one backup copy (I prefer a Bootable Clone of my whole system) off-site. Somewhere other than your House in case of fire or burglary, and update it regularly. == I recommend purchasing and reading this eBook. It is well worth the purchase price.
