Re: YouTube to iTunes?

2009-10-05 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi again Neil,

Interesting ... I just opened one of the video.flv downloaded from
your link and opened it in the new Quicktime 10 application.
Then went to File > "Save As" - and it allows you to save a .mov,
which I then Added to iTunes.

So looks like Quicktime 10 handles flv and conversion to .mov

You don't have to have Quicktime Pro to convert flv for iTunes ...
unless your want other conversion than .mov

Cheers,
Ronni

Any way, I'm looking for advice how to:

1) convert the flv file for iTunes

Do you have Quicktime Pro? If so:
1. Open the flv in QTPro , go to File > Export - Movie to MPEG-4
   Click "Save"
2. Open iTunes go to File > Add to Library - locate your saved .mp4
file

   Click "Choose"

2) convert the problematic mp4 file for iTunes
The other .mp4 file doesn't open in Quicktime player but gives the
following

message:
The movie could not be opened.
An invalid public movie atom was found in the movie.

Two reasons:
1. Movie atoms are little bundles of info that tell your application
all sorts of information about the movie.
An invalid movie atom error often occurs due to information
containing illegal characters.

2. This error occurs when a program converts a video for which the
correct codec is not installed.

"For example, many programs will convert from divx/xvid to Apple
friendly formats for iPods or AppleTv. Most of these programs assume
that the correct video interpretation software (codec) is installed.
If it is not, the program will convert it anyway. The ultimate
unusable output will spit this error.

The fix is to install the correct codec on the machine before
performing the conversions"

3) make iTunes treat the mp4 files as music videos rather than movies

Only iTunes Store downloaded Music Videos will show in Music Video,
any you import with go into Movies.
You can drag and drop from Movies into Music Videos, put the
original still remains in Movies.

iTunes doesn’t store video-type meta data in the video file itself,
but rather in the iTunes database, if you want to have movies, TV
shows, and music videos all filed in the right place, you’ll have to
individually set them in each file’s properties under the Video tab.)

I added the mp4 that Quicktime player will play to the iTunes

OK (and plays just fine) but is showing up as a movie (and placed

I only have one "real" music video (an iTunes store freebie) - it
is also an
mp4 file but it was put into the library like a normal song and

I added both other files to the iTunes library using the "File: add

Generally what you'd want to be looking for is adding a wireless router.
You could replace the broadband modem completely with one that also
does wireless or add a wireless router like an airport extreme/express
to add wireless to the existing modem

YouTube to iTunes?

2009-10-05 Thread Neil Houghton

Hi,

A bit of advice regarding loading and playing music videos from non-iTunes
store sources into iTunes.

I recently found that one of our local singers has posted some videos of her
performances on YouTube.
(See if you're interested)

I have now downloaded 3 videos which are all a little different:

One is a flash video file (.flv file - 23.9MB)
Two are MPEG-4 movie files (.mp4 files - 15.1MB and 10.8MB)

An invalid public movie atom was found in the movie.

So I can obviously just use VLC to watch the files - and this works just

I have tended to only use iTunes for basic music (from CDs) playing and have
very little video experience but what I was wondering was how to get the

Re: Uninstalling Snow Leopard

2009-10-05 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi Michael,

Reverting to an older system is never pleasant, but if he backed up
his Leopard System, before he installed Snow Leopard, it can be
relatively straightforward.
A) If before upgrading to Snow Leopard, he created a bootable
duplicate of his old Leopard System on an external firewire drive (or
another volume).

Follow these steps below:

1. If he modified any documents while working in Snow Leopard,be sure
to save a copy of these documents onto another volume before restoring
your cloned system.

2. Startup your Mac from a volume "other" than the one containing Snow
Leopard.
This can be the hard disk or partition where your duplicate system
exists, or any other volume with a valid Mac OS X System.

3. Launch your backup program (such as SuperDuper or Carbon Copy
Cloner). Follow the program's instructions for making a bootable
duplicate, choose the volume where the duplicate exists as the
"Source". For the "Destination" (or Target), choose the volume
containing Snow Leopard.

4. Start the backup.

5. When the backup finishes, choose the newly restored volume in the
Startup Disk preference pane and restart.

Your computer should now be running your previous system again.

Ronni

Re: iPhone repair

2009-10-05 Thread James Anderson
Hi all,

Just to update you all on the best iPhone repair process I've come up
with so far, since it is superior to the method Optus offers! (for a small
fee).

1. Call Apple 1300 321 456 (put aside 20mins-40mins for being on hold!!)
2. Explain your issue and arrange 'advanced replacement'. Where they send
you a replacement iPhone and a mailing bag and you post your iPhone back to
them. The caveats are: the put a hold on your credit card for the value of
the iPhone and charge you $39 for the advanced-replacement service.

Much better than the month wait without a phone Optus was offering me. Let's
just hope it all works out!

Uninstalling Snow Leopard

2009-10-05 Thread Michael Hawkins

My colleague with the one year old HP Laserjet printer P2014N which will
not work now that Snow Leopard has been installed on his latest model iMac
wants to uninstall SL and reinstall Leopard.

Can that be done by simply installing Leopard as the OS?

His iMac has two internal hard-drives, on only one of which he has installed
SL. Would it be safe for him to back up his work on the SL drive to the
Leopard drive?

Thank you,

Michael Hawkins.

Re: Patio Music Solution. Airtunes????

2009-10-05 Thread Rod Blitvich

Thanks Ab and WAMUG people
Have looked a bit harder at this.

One solution is to run speaker wire to external outdoor speakers.
The speaker wire has to plug in to the indoors sound system. (thanks
Neil)
When I looked at my DVD home theatre system it doesn't seem to have a
spare output for a second set of speakers (and i think being 5.1 might
also complicate things)

The second solution(thanks Neil) is to buy some powered speakers and
plug them and an airport express into the outside powerpoint/s in the
patio, plug a lead from the Airport express into the speakers and then
stream the music from iTunes on the indoors mac to the outdoors
airport express and speakers. (Cost `~$400 and upwards)

The third solution is to buy a ipod dock with speakers and sit it
outside when required. (Cost $150 -$600)

Costs:
Airport Express = $180
cable from APEx to speakers = $60?
Powered Speakers = $100 - $500
Dock with speakers = $150 -$600

So which is the more desirable solution - have your mac talking to the
speakers via APEx or just have your iPod outside mounted in a dock
with speakers???

cheers

Blue cables are Ethernet.

1. There is a Snow Leopard-compatible printer driver for your HP

5MP

2. Is your HP LaserJet 5MP connected to a router - via ethernet?

If the printer is connected via ethernet to your router, and your
Mac is
also connected to the same network, then you should be able to
print from
your Computer to the HP LaserJet 5MP without using AppleTalk -
e.g., you

set up IP printing using the HPJetdirect protocol.
All you will need is the IP address for the printer.

NB: 3. That is IF the HP LaserJet 5MP is NOT an AppleTalk ONLY
Printer!

If it can only print using AppleTalk you would need to purchase a
parallel-to-USB cable and do a direct connection from printer to
Airport.

John,

I use Photoshop Elements ( version 6) to convert NIKON RAW (NEF)s.
Just go into PE and Command O, select file and you'll get a pre-
processing option wherein you can do some basic manipulation like
exposure, colour temp etc. Otherwise Bibble Labs offers a free
product (which is easier to use then PE).

Hi Severin,

Unfortunately iPhoto is designed to work with Cameras and they shoot
RGB.

This has been a problem since version 5.0.4

As you have already found Old Toad's Automator workflow does the

Download and run "Embed sRGB Profile 2" on the grayscale photos by
dropping the image files onto the Automator workflow application.

You can get it from here:

Send Feedback to Apple to get support for "Grayscale images".

Re: Olympus camera download lead

2009-10-05 Thread Paul Weaver
If you go to eBay and type in Olympus Cables you'll probably be able to find
the right one listed for about eight dollars including airmail post from HK.
You'll need to know the model of camera. I've found HK sellers very reliable
and fast in the past.

Cheers, Paul.

I have a card reader here at the house. Let me know if you would like to use
it.

Re: Olympus camera download lead

2009-10-05 Thread KEVIN Lock

Mac,

I think there are only two types of USB camera leads (?) I have a
spare for my Nikon SLR which has the larger (7mm) plug to the camera.
The later pocket Nikon cameras have a smaller (4mm) plug. If my
spare is what you want, I am happy to let you have it.

regards

Kevin

Hi Mac
What about a card reader from K Mart or wherever cost about $25-30.
Probably cheaper than a lead.

Cheers
