I have four Kyoceras on my office network. One got a bit dodgy after
2.5 years getting a bit of toner on the reverse of the print jobs
though that was put down to generic toner. I'm not so sure. Otherwise
they have been great.

Virtual Box 3.0.10

2009-10-29 Thread Clyde McLennan

Hi All,
Some weeks ago (early Sept, 2009) there was some discussion about
Virtual Machines, and one that I looked at closely was Virtual Box.
At that time (v3.0.9), I found that it ran very well, with a few
glaring exceptions, one of them being that it did not handle USB sticks.

I downloaded the more recent version (3.0.10), and it appears that
they may have solved that problem. Now if you insert a USB stick, it
defaults to the Mac computer, you then 'eject' it, and it then appears
on the Virtual Box of available US devices for installing.

The ability to share Mac folders (both read write) works well,
except there is no click and drag (as far as I could tell) between the
two virtual machines.

After installing the new version, I had to restart my Mac computer
before the new version of VB would properly start my previous version
of Win XP.

So for anyone looking for Virtual Machine package, its seems like
this is an excellent product, with an excellent price (free!).

I would be interested in the experience of others with this version
of VB.

Cheers ... Clyde

Driver for Canon Digital Camcorder

I have a Canon digital video camcorder model MV920 (mini DV tape).

It doesn't show up on my computer when I connect it via Firewire. Neither
Apple nor Canon appear to have any drivers for the camera, yet the manual
deals with connection to a Mac.

I suspect it's a casualty of Snow Leopard, but does anyone have any solution

Hi Michael,

What version of iMovie are you using?
Did the MV920 camcorder work in Leopard?

Have you tried Opening iMovie before connecting camcorder to your MBP?
See if iMovie will recognise the camcorder then.

iMovie supports just about any MiniDV tape camcorder.

I can also vouch for OWC - very good price (when the aussie $ is up!) and
delivered in a few days (less than a week) well packed.

They also have instructions on their website including videos, which I found
re-assuring cause the iMac required a certain positive touch to seat the

I know this probably doesn't help, but my (now getting on a bit) JVC
GR-D73AA, also a mini DV tape model, connects just fine in iMovie 09
under Snow Leopard*. I would have thought that Canon would work just
as well. I mention it really just to suggest that I doubt very much if
it's a Snow Leopard issue.

*Note that it does not show up in the Finder: only as an available

Try the old way: with the problem USB stick mounted on your Mac, run
Virtual Box and without launching the Virtual Machine, click the
Settings icon then choose Ports in te Settings interface. Make
sure the Enable USB Contoller checkbox is ticked, as well as the
Enable USB 2.0 (EHCI) Controller. You then have to click on the Add
New USB Filter (the second of those funny little unlabelled icons
running down the righthand side of the window). This will show a list
of available USB devices, one of which should be the USB stick in
question. Choose it and it will appear in the list of USB Device
Filters. Click OK.

Start your Virtual Machine and Windows should now recognise the new
device. This procedure has always worked for me. No where near as
transparent as Parallels 4, but then it's just one of the reasons that
Virtual Box is free and P4 isn't.
