Snow Leopard compatible phones

I'm about to replace my phone. Nokia appeals. Are they (or any other brand
other than iPhone) compatible with Snow Leopard?

Thanks,

Re: Driver for Canon Digital Camcorder

2009-11-04 Thread Michael Hawkins

A belated Thank You to Ronni and Peter.

To summaries, I have a Canon DV MV920 camcorder and, when using Leopard,
appeared on the desktop and downloaded in Apple's straight forward and
obvious manner, but didn't appear to be recognised when I tried connecting
the camera to the MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard.

However, by using iMovie, I am able to import the tape from the Canon DV
camcorder even though the camcorder does not appear on the desktop or show
up as an icon on iMovie.

The process involved when using Snow Leopard is to connect the camera to the
MacBook Pro, start iMovie, got to File then click on Import from Camera.

I know this probably doesn't help, but my (now getting on a bit) JVC

 it's a Snow Leopard issue.

Depends what he wants.

For blogs there is software like Wordpress, or sites like Wordpress.org
and Blogspot.

For photos there's software like Gallery, or sites like flickr,
mobileme, picasa, etc.

More generally there are CMS's like plone, drupal and Joomla.

Some things to consider:
* Do they want the photos to be accessible to everyone, only their
friends, or some other arbitrary groupings?

* Are they writing articles to go along with the photos?
* Is the content updated in a linear blog-style?
* Are they going to run ads?
* Is the audience local or based somewhere else in the world?

If you want to compare CMS's there's the CMSMatrix site

Re: Content management systems

2009-11-04 Thread Glenn Nicholas

Hi Peter,

Older style static HTML/XHTML web sites work by having actual
HTML/XHTML files that you copy to a web server using ftp. To change a
web page, you change the file.

The newer generation of websites based on a Content Management System
(CMS) store a representation of the web pages in a database (often
MySQL, if it is an open source CMS). When a page is requested by the
web server, the CMS gets the content from the database and with a bit
of magic converts that into an HTML/XHTML web page which is sent off
to the web server. Using a CMS you are just changing the content, not
a static web page, and as soon as the content is updated, the next
time a page is served it uses the fresh content. No ftp involved.

An easy (and free) way to see how this all works is to go to
http://wordpress.com and sign up for a free WordPress blog. You'll be
able to log in to your site and use the WordPress dashboard to update
your content, upload images etc. WordPress.com is a fully hosted
option, you can also go to WordPress.org, download the open source
software (free) and follow the instructions to install on your own
server. You'll need to have Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP (LAMP)
installed and running on your server. You can install WordPress on
OS/X as well, as it has the LAMP stack available. But you'll find the
WordPress.com option an easy way to find out what it is all about.

WordPress, Joomla and Drupal are the 3 major CMS' that run on LAMP.
All of them let you build complete websites, with web pages,
integrated blogs and various other options.

Putting an iTunes song on my iPhone

2009-11-04 Thread Denise Williams

Hi all
I'm a newbie to the iPhone and I know I'm supposed to be able to download
songs from iTunes onto my phone, using Bluetooth.
I've selected the Bluetooth icon on the very top of my iMac screen. It says
Bluetooth is on but then another window comes up saying
Denise Williams's iMac is the name Bluetooth devices use to connect
to this computer.

Then the 2 boxes underneath that are both ticked ie On is ticked and so is
Discoverable. But then under that is a small picture of an iPhone and it
says 'Denise Williams's iPhone not connected - it shows a small red dot.
On the right side of this window it says
Type Handsfree
Services Handsfree Gateway
Paired No
Connected No

I've checked the iPhone settings - General - Bluetooth and it shows as ON.
It also shows a spinning wheel under Devices and constantly searches for
something? Under that it says 'Now Discoverable' I have the iPhone sitting
next to the computer.

I am on an iMac with 10.5.8

All this effort has used so much of my valuable time, just so that I can put
a song or two on my iPhone!! Technology is for the nerds!

So are there any 'nerds' able to help me - I say that with the greatest
respect!

Hi Severin,

Have you taken a look at Address Book Server on the link Ronni sent

never hurt. Address Book Server support 10.4, 10.5 and 10.6 and lets

you can get a free license until the end of November.

With your own server your contacts are always kept up-to-date, either

does Calendars if you want to sync those as well.

I am using an iMac with OS 10.5.6, Safari is 3.2.1, Firefox is
3.0.11. I had considered downloading a newer version of Safari but
I don't want to install Snow Leopard so I don't know what version
of Safari to get.

I have restarted and deleted cookies and still no joy. Have not
yet tried a different user account yet. How do I repair
permissions? One of the bad??? things about the Mac is that you
don't have to
fiddle under the bonnet very often, so you forget how and where
to fix things!!

Hi Peter,

You don't say what versions of Safari Firefox you are using.
Make sure you have installed all the latest updates for both
Safari Firefox.

And you have the latest updates for Java.

Then repair permissions:

As your problem is happening on both browsers, it is some setting
or update required on your Mac.

Do you have Java JavaScript enabled on both Browsers?
Have you tried in a different User Account?

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi Peter,
I just tried it using Safari on my iMac and it worked fine.

You have to actual do a reload of the site (right click/reload)
as the temporary files on your system could be sned you the
can't find the site message.

I have been regularly using the site www.woodworkforums.com
for a couple of years and on Saturday I could not log on to
it. I still can't logon with Safari or Firefox, but I can get
any other site. I have emailed the woodwork administrator who
assures me all is OK at their end, and I can access the site
using the PC here which is networked to my Mac. The ISP told
me to enter the DNS details into the Mac but that hasn't worked.

Any ideas??
