Serious White Hat Question

2010-02-26 Thread Aurora74

Hi Guys,

I have a friend who is a professional While Hat needing to look at the
Healthy Option (Apple a day).

They need apps that mimic the following in the Mac

SysTracer, Fiddler, Wireshark, Netmon

systracer takes a system snapshot of the windows registry, files and
folders. you can take multiple snapshots and compare any two that you wish.
and the results are color coded depending on whether something is added,
deleted, or changed

re systracer ... reports can be exported in html and viewed in a web browser

nd the captures can be imported into systracer on another PC for close
examination

Fiddler captures all HTTP and HTTPS traffic (reducing the signal to noise
ratio of products like wireshark) and can decrypt SSL traffic

Wireshark and Netmon capture network traffic

Any suggestions?

Smiles

Thanks Jack, that link seems to answer all my questions and reservations

do everything I want with this software update.

Hi Peter

As I understand it you would have two options.

1. Convert your video files to a format that iTunes recognises. I use
applications such as iSquint and Visual Hub to convert video files to
iTunes compatible formats. Once in iTunes it is simply a matter of
syncing with the AppleTV.

2. Hack the AppleTV to play other formats/sources. This is one that I
have not tried, but there is quite a bit of information available on how
to do a software hack of the AppleTV to use other sources and formats.
Just google 'Apple TV hacks' and have read at the options. But hacking
involves forcing an update of the firmware, so can cause warranty
issues.

Hope that helps!

RE: External USB HDD (2 partitions) is not showing

2010-02-26 Thread Alan Smith

Hello again Ronni

My Maxtor USB HDDs have disappeared again. I woke the iMac and immediately
got the eject warning message. I unplugged and replugged the USB HDD in USB
4 but no joy. Repeated. Then tried re-plugging into USB 4 again 40
minutes later - and the external disk icons appeared on Desktop!

You asked: +When you connected the USB Drive to USB 4 on iMac, were you able
to do a Time Machine backup then?+
Time Machine is supposed to continue a back up if it is interrupted. I
didn't try a second manual back up. But the Console log entry shows at 4.07
(wakeup time) it did not start TM as its last backup was done within 60
minutes. I think it safe to assume TM did back up while the HDD appeared on
the desktop. I was listening to music via the HDD at this time - no
interruptions or cut-offs. So while the icons display on desktop the drive
seems to work. By the way, Console log at 4.42 states it is not doing
scheduled TM backup as destination is not resolvable. That clears up my
earlier claim that TM scheduled backup seemed to trigger the loading of the
external drives.

You asked: + Has this drive worked properly before connected to USB 1?+
The Maxtor USB HDD has been using USB 1 for at least two months. I must
mention that the iMac gets very little use because of its overall
unreliability (hence my original SL complaint). I still use my old Windows
XP PC for daily work. The last TM backup was yesterday (25 Feb), with the
previous latest on 11 Feb.

You asked: + Are you running your iTunes Library from the Maxtor Drive?
Is iTunes running from that library when Time Machine backs up to the other
partition?+
Maxtor partition 1 is for Time Machine. Partition 2 is the iTunes library. I
used iTunes playback almost daily through January and the first few days of
February. I normally never notice when Time Machine is operating - it
doesn't affect music playback.

You suggest the Maxtor has developed a slow start-up problem. It's
interesting that another current WAMUG Subject (WD External Drive) has been
put down to a faulty WD power supply. Perhaps Maxtor (Seagate?) get their
power supplies from the same source!

As a final comment there is another strange iMac behaviour associated with
USB. Just to check the USB inputs, I powered on my second special data
files backup WD drive in USB 3 and it displayed its drive icons on the
desktop almost immediately. But then Time Machine began a back-up. The
(blue) LED on the WD drive flashed and its drive chattered throughout the
backup. The actual TM data appears to have been written to the correct
Maxtor drive, but there is obviously some interference on the USB circuitry.
## These next comments added later, just before I send the email: Time
Machine has just completed another backup (by chance I was looking at the
file in Finder and saw the action). It worked quietly without fuss and
without interacting with the second WD external drive. I then let the iMac
Sleep using its own defaults then woke it after 5 minutes. All is still
well: no error message and I still have the HDDs available in Finder and
Desktop.

Intermittent or malevolent fault?

Yours, in some frustration,
Alan

Re: WD External drive

2010-02-26 Thread John Daniels
Thankyou everyone for help on this one. I followed James advice (it
was easiest) and the third time I tried it a 'set up Time Machine'
menu appeared. I had not seen this menu before. When I did this
everything works.

Cheers

just my 2 cents
powerup the drive first, wait approx 20s then plug in the firewire
or usb cable & see how fast it appears on screen

Hi John

I found that sometimes the first thing to go with those units was
the Power
Supply. Although it would look like the unit was getting power, it
infact
wasn't. If you can borrow or find a similar power pack, try that
and see how

you.

I would use pulling the WD case apart as a last resort, as it's quite
tightly sealed, and damages easily upon opening. (I pulled one
apart from a
client and you have to be very careful with them, they have some
"hidden
seals".) If you do decide to pull it apart theres some good YouTUbe
videos
how to do it if you google for "pulling Western Digital MyBook case
apart".

Hope that helps.

Kind Regards
Daniel

Greetings! Buy or borrow an external Firewire/USB HD case. Pull

drive is still good.

Hi all
My external backup drive has suddenly stopped backing up and
does not

show in Finder or Disc Utility.

I plugged in another small drive and that works OK.
Is there any way of diagnosing the problem with the WD external
drive?

Cheers
John

Is the non-working drive USB or Firewire? Are you able to test it
with a

differnet computer?
