Have you tried the foomatic printer drivers? There's one for the HP Laserjet
5MP.

Re: HP laser Jet 1022

2010-04-06 Thread David Noel

Hi Stuart --

-- Yes, there have been many reported problems with HP laser printers
not working under Snow Leopard. I have an HP Laserjet 5MP printer, and
in spite of a lot of suggested fixes, I've still not got it working
with SL. It's on an ethernet network (via a Belkin router), and the
printer works as normal from an older iMac running Leopard on the
network.

-- It seems that many of these problems occur because Apple dropped
support for Appletalk with the introduction of SL, and my 5MP was
using Appletalk. I'm currently investigating whether I can get it
working using one of the other two interface connections it has.

-- If you go to the HP or Apple sites, you can find printer drivers to
download, which on the face of it should work. But they don't. Check
if your printer is connected via Appletalk (fairly thin cable with a
round connector), if so, see if you have other connectors available
(remove cover where cable enters printer). If you are using an
Appletalk link, it is possible a resolution may be found using the
other connectors. Years ago I used the RS232 connector to print
directly from a PC.

While there are probably chemical products to do this I generally just give
I a good shake and some taps while it's been held upside down then use a
microfiber cloth to remove grunge... Some times I'll slightly dampen the
cloth with water but wring it out until it stops dripping water when you
squeeze it

Re: Keyboard cleaning

2010-04-06 Thread KEVIN Lock

Severin,

At last, something I can claim to be an expert in!Just yesterday
I cleaned 5 eMac white keyboards.

I remove the keys and wash them all (except the ones with the metal
bits) and brush the base with a stiff brush and use compressed air to
get all the fur and biscuit out.

The earlier extended keyboards collect lots of junk in the clear
base. Lots of compressed air gets most of that out.

The latest iMac boards don't look like they easily come apart and I
clean them with a soft cloth and Meths. Works for me!

regards

Kevin

Can anyone recommend a method/product for cleaning keyboards of that
grime that just accumulates on and down between the keys. I realise
that a scrubbing brush and soapy water is not a viable way to go!

Re: Losing my connection

2010-04-06 Thread Neil Houghton

Hi Mike,

Thanks, I'll check those discussions out later and, like you, try turning
off the Wake for network access in the Energy Saver preference pane first.

In the meantime, I got the disconnect again and, this time, decided to try
my network preferences ideas, ie:

>> Secondly, to try to make the iMac "look-for" the internet connection again,

Only in my case, obviously, in the "Airport" pane rather than the "Ethernet"
pane.

I found that just hitting the "Renew DHCP Lease" didn't, in fact, obtain a
DHCP lease - obviously there was still a connection problem. However,
turning DHCP off and then on again (remembering to hit "Apply" after EACH
step) DID solve the problem - so there you go.

For me, it's still easier to turn Airport On/Off from the menu bar but, for
your Ethernet connection, this method (assuming it works for you) should be
easier than re-booting the computer and/or modem.

Of course, if your other suggestions provide a permanent fix - you won't
need this.

Cheers

Neil

Re: epson stylus photo R310 Printer

2010-04-06 Thread Daniel Kerr

Hi Peta

You should have "Epson Printer Utility", which almost always gets installed
if the CD was used to install it.
You *may* find an alias to it in your Applications folder.
If you don't then there should also be one installed in the following
location.

NOTE: As the following is buried away in Library folders used by the system
please don't move or change or rename anything in here, as all the folder
structure is set a specific way the System requires it. Moving or changing
things can have damaging effects to your computer.
/end note.

Macintosh HD - Library - Printers - EPSON - InkjetPrinter - Utilities

Inside here should be a Utility called Epson Printer Utility (may have a 1
or 2 or 3 after it). If you run this it will allow you to do the Print Head
clean.
(If the alias for it isn't in the Application folder, once it's running then
you can Control click on it's Dock icon and Choose "Keep in Dock", that way
it's there for whenever you need it next, without having to and relook for
it)

Once you open it, just follow you nose. It should bring up a window listing
your model of printer, which you click next arrow, and it will show it's
connected via USB. Once you click through enough arrows etc it will take you
to a main "choice" window, where one of the options will be "Head Cleaning".

(Looks like this link, although not for your printer model):-

(Or if the above link doesn't work, here's a tiny one)

That should get it working for you (hopefully).

Kind Regards
Daniel

Re: Losing my connection

2010-04-06 Thread Mike Fuller

There is an Apple Discussion about the topic I raised yesterday : Internet
connection lost after sleep - Ethernet (although it seems to affect wireless
connections also)

Link is here:
http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2258749&start=45&tstart=0

My iMac surprisingly didn't lose connection last night so I couldn't test your
recommendations Neil. But a couple of others that are mentioned in the Apple
discussion, and which worked for some, are:

Turn off the Wake for network access in the Energy Saver preference
Delete these two pref files:
Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist

I've just done the energy saver one and I'll see how that goes before trying
anything else.

Re: Burning DVD

2010-04-06 Thread Eugene
Hi John,

that helps heaps.

Drag the file into iMovie. Edit it there, add titles, subtitles too if you
wish. Tidy it up.

Now from within iMovie share it to iDVD. Select a theme that you like. Tidy it
up.

From the File menu select Burn. Your DVD should be ready to play on a home DVD
player or any computer.

Good luck.

In the absence of any further details, iDVD should do the trick for you.
You should have a copy already installed on your Mac. If not, you'll have

Re: Burning DVD

2010-04-06 Thread John Daniels

Hi Eugene
The instructional movie is mpg4 downloaded from the net through Google
videos.

Does that help?
Cheers

John,

you don't say what format the original movie is in. Did you create
it in iMovie or is it a movie off YouTube or something similar?

A home video player will play movies that are in a particular
format, this is the job for iDVD or perhaps Toast if you have that.
If you open a commercial DVD on your computer you will see a video
folder containing .VOB documents. THis is the format for videos used
on a home DVD player.

When you copy and burn to a DVD disk straight from the computer the
disk is merely a data / storage disk. Home video players usually
won't play these disks.

Regards,
Eugene

Thanks Peter
I do have iDVD which I have never used so I will read up on it.
I always burn CDs or DVDs by just copying files to a burn folder
and burning from there.
I understand there is something called multiplexing or authoring
which I think makes the discs playable on a household DVD player.
Is that correct and if so does my method do this or only iDVD?

I would appreciate some pointers on this.
Cheers
John

Hi Folks
Can anyone give me heads up on how I can burn a DVD from a movie
on my Power PC 10.5.8 to a DVD and get it to play on the Mac and
also on a DVD player. Which type of DVD to use, -R or +R and how
to format the DVD to play on both items?

Cheers
John

In the absence of any further details, iDVD should do the trick
for you. You should have a copy already installed on your Mac. If
not, you'll have to fork out for a copy of iLife.
