new iMac - printing times out and pauses

2010-07-21 Thread gary dorn

Howdy
we have a Laser printer connected via USB to an Airport extreme down
in the lower ground floor.

a power mac G4 (10.4.8) and Macbook (10.6.2) on the Upper floor ,
both with airport, print AOK

right next to these two is my wifes new iMac (10.6.3),
internet and email all work fine.
file sharing is turned on
screen sharing is turned on and works fine.
we have setup the laser printer, however...

.when we go to print from the iMac, it all goes through the
dialogue boxes fine, but nothing happens at the printer. eventually
after say 3 minutes the laser printer status changes to Pause, and it
doesn't print anything.

We have tried 2 of the accounts on this iMac and get the same thing

the macbook ( positioned right next to it) prints the same document
in 15 seconds.

Because internet seem to work okay, I am suspecting that the system
has some other setting or preference that needs adjusting,

Any thoughts on where to start is appreciated.

thanks in advance

Hi Pedro,

If running the Combo OS X 10.6.4 doesn't solve the Kernel Panic on the iMac.
Do you have any external devices attached to the iMac?
If so, disconnect all external devise except keyboard and mouse.
See if you experience any Kernel Panic then.

Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem or software as Daniel
has mentioned.
Frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device can cause Kernel Panic.

Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc? Running the Apple Hardware Test in
Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent
hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent
kernel panics.
If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are
using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before
starting the test.
'Looping On' should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test
button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found.
If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it
found.
If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the
failure.
In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a
good run, perhaps overnight.

In case no problem is found after running the test overnight, you can exit the
loop and stop the test by clicking on the Stop Test or Cancel buttons.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: wireless-router

2010-07-21 Thread Merv Bond

Thanks to all those who provided ideas about a router. The scene
certainly has changed with gs and bs and some routers not being ADSL
compatible. Ended up choosing a Billion 7404VGPX ADSL2+/3G Modem with
VoIP. Hope it does all the dances that are promised.

G4 Mini tower bits please

2010-07-21 Thread Peter McCallum

Hi I am looking for a replacement hard drive for a g4 500mhz (2000
model) minitower and also a suitable video card. Hard drive needs to
be internal and at least 200 gigs.
Video card can be anything that will suit. An upgrade from the ATI
rage pro that would suit would be welcome

Re: iMac shut down problem

Hi Peter

I don't think its really worth doing anything with it, unless you can get
donations :)

You might be better off looking for a second hand G5 or buying a MacMini

Best regards
