Some very good tips there Peter, and with the arrival of Filemaker Go, an
compelling reason to purchase the iPad. Might just wait until the next release
before I do though.

I've been using the Matias Tactile Pro 3 for almost two months now. It is as
good as I had hoped. If you're sick of the newer iMac keyboards (I certainly
was), and have a spare couple of hundred, then check it out. I'm a ten-finger

Re: iPhone 3Gs Sync issues.

2010-08-23 Thread Daniel Forsdyke

Hi Peter

I had a similar problem with my iPhone 3G. Every time for about a month when I
plugged it into the computer, via USB, I would get a message that said it could
not sync and that it could not find the required file.

As part of the troubleshooting I ended up unselecting all the media files, such
as music and videos, etc. This ended up resolving the issue but meant I did not
have any media on the iPhone.

I must admit I never worked out a solution that allowed me to get media back on
the 3G as I then upgraded to the iPhone4 a few weeks later and can sync all the
media without problem.

The iPhone will not work with iSync as it is designed to only sync with the
computer via iTunes. Also it will not allow file transfer via Bluetooth either
in terms of syncing or file transfer between mobiles - something to do with
security.

Hi Peter,

I would start by trashing your iPod's Photo cache as described in this Apple
support document.

Post back if that doesn't solve the problem.

iPhone 3Gs Sync issues.

2010-08-23 Thread Peter McCallum

Hello,
Is there anybody that can shed some light on this message that appears
when
syncing an iPhone with the current version of iTunes. (Non intel
powermac g4)

The iPhone "iPhone" cannot be synced. The required file cannot be found.

I do not know what "The required file is"

The program iSync will not work with the iPhone and the blue tooth
also does not work.
iSync sees the phone but it will not allow file transfer from or to
the iPhone.

There is a prescribed "best practice" approach to convert from .fp6 files. If
your existing solution contains just a single file, simply drop its icon onto
the Filemaker 11 application icon in the dock (or wherever else you can see
it). If your solution relies on multiple files strung together with
relationships, select ALL of the files involved and drop them together onto the
Filemaker ii icon. It's very important that you select every file in this
instance if you want ot avoid headaches down the track. In either case,
Filemaker will warn you that the files were created with an earlier version of
Filemaker Pro, and save them all as .fp7 files in a location you specify.
Filemaker 11 will do all the conversion necessary. You do not need Filemaker 7
or 8. The .fp7 file extension is still the filename extension used for
Filemaker 11 files, which is in keeping with all previous major upgrade changes
with Filemaker Pro.

Bear in mind that while a multi-file solution will be copied faithfully, with
all files in their correct location and all relationships honoured, Filemaker
Pro has, since Filemaker 7, supported the practice of storing multiple tables
within a single file. The ramifications of this approach for the way you think
about using Filemaker are far too numerous to go into here, but there are some
excellent resources on Filemaker's site which explain it all.

Just as a small example for my own part, I have written a small Filemaker file
which keeps track of the various tips, techniques, helpful emails, websites,
etc that I come across on a daily basis. I now have several years' worth of
information stored in it, but it has, naturally enough, been written for use on
my standard Macs, ie, my iMac and my Macbook Pro. I am now using that identical
file on my iPhone 4. I get the same layouts, all the scripts work the same, and
I have full search on any field I want. It's the same database. All that was
necessary was to use iTunes to copy the file to the iPhone. There was nothing
else to do.

I also have my business solution, which I also wrote in Filemaker, being served
on my iMac. Filemaker Go picks this up through the wireless network and it
works perfectly.

>
> If I have multiple ipads (for separate jobs offshore) can I use the one
> version of Go and database?

The current iteration if Filemaker Pro does not support synchronisation,
although that's not to say it might not in the future, and Filemaker aren't
saying. For the time being, therefore, if you have multiple copies of the same
file in use at once, data management is problem you will have to solve for
yourself. Filemaker Go is still so new that most of the FM Developer community
is working on the problem, so I think solutions and strategies will emerge over
time.

Cheers,

Peter

Re: iPhone 4 Case Program

2010-08-23 Thread Brian Risbey

Yes there is the app for the free apple case, lots of quite reasonable choices,
not just bumpers.

Apple confirmation email is $0.00 so all good.

iPhone ordered through Apple shop just turned up 2 days early, Telstra provided
a mini sim and off it goes

My 5 year old just took over - lots of ed apps out there.

Tickled pink - already had downloaded 200 apps. Wireless airport connection at
home easily connected.

To get your free case from Apple you download the free case app from the app
store and choose and order via that. Which I did.
Apple will than send you your case of choice... eventually.

Paul, perhaps the case your daughter chose was above a certain value which
Apple have as a threshold on thier free limit. I did not see any hint of that
when I used the app tho.

I'm not sure what's going on there, but I was told by All Phones when I picked
up my iPhone 4 that Optus was the only Oz Telco that was honouring the Apple
agreement is providing free bumper cases. All the other are keeping the cases

Optus.

Re: iPhoto Library "lost"

2010-08-23 Thread Marlene Oostryck

Thanks Ronni and Peter for your comments.

No Ronni, I did not touch the iPhoto Library in Finder - but in iPhoto
09 just dragged and dropped or selected Photos/Send to Trash.

I was deleting duplicates that I had imported from a thumb drive -
amongst lots of other photos that I wanted. When importing from a
thumb drive iPhoto does not seem to ask the question re skipping the
importing of duplicates as it does when importing from a camera - but
I may have missed the question.
Also, I have plenty of memory so never empty the iPhoto trash - just
in case I do make a mistake.

"Duplicate Annihilator" certainly looks like it would be very helpful
for me.

I will also burn all the photos on to archive quality DVDs (Taiyo
Yuden) as another back-up. I currently have them on cheaper DVDs at
but believe they do not last more than 5-8 years and after hearing
about 2 external hard drive crashes from Peter H I would prefer to use
another format as well.

I never cease to be amazed at the breadth of your knowledge - and your
willingness to take the time to share it.

Many thanks.

Marlene

Hi All

iPhoto would not open and asked "What photo library do you want
iPhoto to use? When I looked in "Pictures" it was blank! Major
Panic!
Luckily I was able to restore all through Time Machine and My Book
WD external drive. It appears that all has been restored.
(I have also since found my "iPhoto Library" in the iPhoto
trash)

Reading the threads for "iPhoto error 9459" I see there were
additional instructions to rebuild the iPhoto Library.

Do I need to do anything extra to my restored iPhoto Library?

Any info would be appreciated.

Many thanks.

You're already doing the best thing you can do by running Time
Machine. It is precisely events like this that justify Time
Machine's existence. Who knows what happened to cause the problem?
Most computing disasters happen while we're not watching, and
repetitive activities such as your manual cleanup activity are
particularly prone to mishaps of this kind. I speak from experience
here! The fact that the iPhoto Library accounts for the fact that
iPhoto couldn't find it, and points to a possible keystroke
accident while in the wrong screen. I will say that one of the
first places I investigate after a computer disaster like this is
the Trash folder.

In addition to Time Machine, you might want to look around for some
good iPhoto Library maintenance software, something that will sort
out duplicates for you. I don't have any recommendations
unfortunately, but I'm sure others will.

Hi Marlene,

How did you do your clearing out the duplicates within the iPhoto
Application?
You didn't touch the iPhoto Library in Finder (~/Pictures/iPhoto
Library)?

I would think you have as Peter suggest done a keystroke combination
or such to move all the library photos to the Trash.
If you have emptied iPhoto’s trash (note, iPhoto’s own trash, not
the system trash); then it depends on whether you imported the
photos directly into iPhoto, straight from the camera, or if they
were already in other folder(s) before importing. In the latter
case, and assuming you have not deleted the original folder(s), the
photos will still be there.

iPhoto detects duplicates of photos you have already imported from
your camera and asks you if you want to skip those duplicates on
importing.

But when the duplicated photos are already in iPhoto “Duplicate
Annihilator “ is the best app to use to find & delete the duplicates.

Duplicate Annihilator is a
good application for finding and deleting duplicate photos in iPhoto.

Requirements
• Mac OS X 10.4.x, 10.5.x or 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
• iPhoto 5, 6, 7(iLife'08) or 8(iLife'09)
