Apple Mail - rules query

2010-08-28 Thread Steven Knowles
In Mail (latest version within OSX 10.6.4), let's say I have the following
mailboxes ...

Mailbox A
Mailbox B
Mailbox C

I have a rule such that if a message arrives in account 'Mailbox A', and
contains a specific string of characters, then the message will be copied to
Mailbox B. That works fine.

What I now want to do is copy the arriving message to Mailbox C (as well as
copying it to Mailbox B. However when I tried to add the action Copy Message
To Mailbox C, the 'Copy Message' option is greyed out, presumably because I've
already used the 'Copy Message' option in order to copy to Mailbox B. Mail
doesn't seem to allow you to duplicate 'Copy Message' action within the same
rule.

So, I created a new rule, same as the first rule but replacing 'Copy Message to
Mailbox B' with 'Copy Message to Mailbox C'. Upon testing this, Mail seems to
act on the 1st rule, but ignores the 2nd rule. I suspect that this is due to:

Each incoming message can have only one rule applied to it.
Mail doesn't consider the message copied to Mailbox B an incoming message.

Whilst typing out this query, I did figure a workaround, however it's not
perfect so I'll keep typing.

To my rule I added another action - 'Redirect message to Mailbox C'. Whilst
this works, it does leave a trail, in that the message in Mailbox B is marked
as 'redirected', which is not ideal. So if anyone knows how I can 'copy' an
incoming message to more than one mailbox, I'd be interested to hear.

Cheers, Steven

This should be noted from the bottom of that webpage.

Both uploads and downloads count towards your quota usage.

Uploads never used to be counted. Still good deals to be had, though.
I might consider downgrading my plan as I never use up my quota now
since it went to 50/50.

Bob,
Good to hear from you again. Hope all is going well for you.
I know when one posts a question there is no obligation on the part of
list members to respond so when none came I went ahead and dragged Merv
to the external HD.
Then last night your response came. Thank you for that. I am now
reconsidering my position!!!
The HD is a WD MyBookWorld 1TB and is for network backup - it has an
ethernet connection and a USB 2 for add-ons.
For the first backup the instructions suggest a direct ethernet
connection between computer and HD. I did that and 55GB took about an
hour to transfer. Tested access to some files. All OK.
The documentation for the HD says it supports HTTP, HTTPS, HFS+J,
CIFS/SMB, NFS, FTP. Disk Utility does no 'see' the HD so I cannot check
as to its format. SuperDuper requires HFS+J, but I cannot check this -
clicking on the icon an selecting Get Info does not show format either.
I could try a User backup with SuperDuper and see how far it gets.

I have another HD with firewire as a bootable backup.
Thank you for your response.

Re: Home file copy

2010-08-28 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Merv,

As Bob has already mentioned, a drag and drop of your Home Folder is NOT a
good idea, and can/will have problems.

Do you have anything else on this external drive or intend to?
If not, why don't you use Time Machine to backup just your Home Folder if you
don't wish to backup your whole System?

If you do use Time Machine, it is best to use the drive exclusive for Time
Machine backups.
If you wish to use it for other data as well, it's much better to partition an
external drive into 2 parts, (also called volumes).
Assign one to Time Machine, for its exclusive use for backups; use the other
partition however you want.

'How to Format Partition your Drive to work with Time Machine':

1.Make sure to copy any files on your hard disk to another location because
reformatting will erase them.

2.Click on your computer hard disk’s icon. Select Applications → Utilities →
Disk Utility.

3.In the left hand column, click on the drive icon for the name of your
external drive.
Make sure you click on the first icon, not the second level volume icon.

4.Select the Partition tab.

5.Select the format type from the Format drop-down menu.
Select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) (recommended).

6.Click on the Options button.

7.Select the type of partition you want to use:
(In your case you would require GUID as you are using an Intel computer)
GUID Partition Table - for Intel-based Macs
Apple Partition Map - for PowerPC-based Macs

8.Click OK.

9.Click the Apply button.

Then turn on Time Machine from the panel in System Preferences and set Time
Machine to exclude all but your Home Folder.

Or, as Bob suggests use SuperDuper?

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi Ronni
When I get to step 3 the only image in the left hand column that appears
is my computer's HD, not the external drive and that is why I do not
know what it's format is.

To complicate matters I wish to store files from my intel and from my
wife's iBook G4, a power PC.

Perhaps, as Bob suggested, we store only those files and folders we
created. Prior to doing that I would remove the Merv Home file that is
now sitting there.

Thanks

Re: Mac mini vers iMac

2010-08-28 Thread Touchwood

Hi John

With the recent refresh of the iMac, its processors, graphics card
etc. are now well ahead of the Mac mini.

The Mac mini also has the slower 5400 rpm HD vs 7200rpm of the iMac.
To get 8GB of RAM into the Mac mini you need to purchase two 4GB
Modules as there are only 2 RAM slots,
which is a more expensive option than the 4 x 2GB you can achieve
with the iMac.

By the time you spec up a Mac mini and add the cost of the monitor,
you're paying the equivalent of the base iMac

and you've got a very underpowered machine by comparison.

There is no doubt the Mac mini is a beautiful and elegant little
machine...it's just a shame Apple won't come to the party

and give it the horse power it needs.

Just a word of warning if you decide to go the iMac route.

Since the introduction of the LED screen at the end of last year,
there is an issue with yellow tinge or blotchy screens.
Unfortunately this seems to be a subjective issue...some people don't
seem phased by it... for others (like me ;-) )
it is extremely annoying and unacceptable in a computer for which we
are paying $2,000.

Last December I purchased a new iMac and its screen was bad (yellow
blotches), nowhere near the quality of my current G5 iMac.
Two screen replacements and two replacement computers later, Apple
still could not give me an iMac with an acceptable screen,
and the last two iMacs also had manufacturing defects in the bargain
(one had black paint scratched off on the inside of the glass border

and the other had a ding in the lower right front corner.)
In the end I gave up and managed to get a refund...the whole exercise
took from December 2009 to April 2010.

I've waited until this recent refresh to try again and with some
trepidation I have ordered another iMac.

In fact it is ready for me to pick up from the courier depot tomorrow.
I hope I don't have to go through the whole replacement fiasco again,
but I am not confident when discussions like these are

still showing up

If the Mac mini was just a more capable computer, I would definitely
have chosen it over the iMac, just to avoid

all the angst that Apple's lack of quality control is giving me.

Sorry about the rant, but I hope this information is helpful to you.

Re: Mac mini vers iMac

2010-08-28 Thread Rob Davies

Morning All,

I have noticed this issue with iMacs previous and current models, also a lot of
LED monitors of recent purchase.
But, once monitor has been calibrated it is perfect no tint, cannot fault
current 27 iMac once achieved.

Reasoning for this is quite simply, colour temperature settings of monitors are
set for Northern Hemisphere which use a cooler temperature being Red - Orange-
Yellow/Bone as it gets close to a natural tone? Hotter being natural to a blue
which for us in Southern Hemisphere is closer to our natural lighting
conditions.

So, economics of where monitors are to be used is why monitors are such, as is
the colour profiles within colorsync and other default colour profiles or
software.

Monitors used to be sold this way and some professional monitors still are.

Another reason as most people have shown through surveys and are not bothered
by such a tint, is it is a lot more comfortable to use this way. Just try
setting Apple gamma profile to a hotter temperature and see how you feel after
an hour or more.

Cheers!

With the recent refresh of the iMac, its processors, graphics card etc. are
now well ahead of the Mac mini.
The Mac mini also has the slower 5400 rpm HD vs 7200rpm of the iMac.
To get 8GB of RAM into the Mac mini you need to purchase two 4GB Modules as
there are only 2 RAM slots,
which is a more expensive option than the 4 x 2GB you can achieve with the
 iMac.

By the time you spec up a Mac mini and add the cost of the monitor, you're
paying the equivalent of the base iMac
and you've got a very underpowered machine by comparison.

Re: Mac mini vers iMac

2010-08-28 Thread Touchwood

Hi Rob

The problem with my screens was that the yellow tinge was not even
across the whole screen.
It showed as three flares/blotches of yellow coming up from the
bottom increasing in

height from left to right.
Although calibrating did help a little, because the tingeing/
blotching was so uneven, it did not

solve the problem.

I should have mentioned that my purchase was a 21.5 iMac.
The 27 screens appear to be faring much better this time around
while the 21.5

still seems problematic.
