Re: Windows Snow Leopard
Hi Michael, Ah, Voice Recordings ... As I mentioned in my first reply iTunes can run into trouble with lower resolution voice recorder WAVs. If they won’t play in iTunes: Rather than trying to convert from WAV to MP3 which would lose a lot of the quality, you might want to try converting from WAV to another lossless format. My suggestion is that you try to convert the WAVs to Apple Lossless (which sound just as good as WAV files, but only take up about half as much space) If you wish to send me one of the tracks ( Offlist ) that won't play for you, I'll have a look at it see if I can convert it to a suitable format. Re: Telstra iPhone data usage
Hi Andrew, I found that with my iPhone sat on my desk, connected through my home wireless network, it still was clocking up 3G data (not huge amounts but ongoing) - I ended up switching off 3G and I suspect I will just leave 3G switched off until I actually want to access something when not in a wireless zone, switch it on to access what I need, then switch it off again. I signed up for the Telstra mobile data usage meter - but it is far from reassuring: It currently says: You have currently used 23% (47.8MB) of your 205MB included data. Data usage displayed is from Tue 14 Sep '10. Your next bill is due to be issued on Wed 06 Oct '10. However: 1. My current plan is supposed to include 500MB of data. Not 205 MB 2. The only session listed is one session of 3 secs on 30 Sept which used 6kb (I momentarily switched 3G data on then off again) 3. If I try to use the Search Usage to search by date range (using todays date as the ³to² date: * If I exclude the 30th Sept, the listed session disappears (which is what I would expect) * If I set the date range from 14 Sept 10 (supposedly the ³from² date for the 47.8MB usage) it get a message saying ³Attention From date is before last Bill Date² - It isn¹t, my last bill was dated 02 Sept 10 and my next bill is apparently due to be issued on 06 Oct 10 * If I set the date range from 15 Sept 10, the message goes away but still the only session listed is the 6kb on 30 Sept. 4. So the Mobile Data Usage Meter tells me I have apparently used 47.8 MB since 14 Sept but it only actually identifies 6kb of it! Now, 47.8MB isn¹t actually a problem except that this was all generated while connected through a wireless network and over a relatively short time (I¹ve had 3G switched off for quite a while) so: 1. I have no confidence whatsoever in the Mobile Data Usage Meter 2. I dare not actually switch on 3G and use my iPhone for fear it will run up a huge data bill with no reliable means to check it. Sort of spoils my enjoyment of the iPhone somewhat :o( Cheers Neil -- Neil R. Re: Windows Snow Leopard
Hmmm, Well, as Ronni says, rather than mp3, you can use a lossless formula - which will not degrade the quality - though I guess any file conversion may affect the integrity of the recording in that it will no longer be the WAV file recorded. I would have thought that keeping a backup of the original WAV CD would maintain the integrity of the recording - in that you can always get back to the original file - whilst having a converted copy allows for convenience of use/listening. If you want to maintain the integrity of the original WAV recordings: You say: It is not a commercial CD, but was made by professionals as a series of voice recordings. Import settings in iTunes are set as WAV Encoder with settings Automatic. Have also tried preference MP3. So instead of using Automatic you could try using Custom and ask your professionals what WAV parameters they used and then plug those values into your Custom settings. Of course, you can always run Windows 7 on your Mac - through various approaches - but if you have no other use for Windows, it seems like overkill just to listen to unusual audio files. Re: What makes an iMac 2GHz start running super slow ?
Hi Stephen You can also check that the Hard Drive isn't reporting an error. A major one to look out for is the I/O error. To check this, do the following:- Go to Applications - Utilities and open Console. (Or Command-Shift-U from Finder then Console). If the side list isn't showing, click on Show Log List. Under FILES, look for system.log and click on that. You will see strings and strings of text. Scroll through it and if you happen to see something like:- date time kernel[0]: disk0s2: I/O error. And it repeats itself,...lots of times. Then time to back up the files and get it looked at I'm afraid. An I/O error for the disk0s2 is normally the fault reported for the Main Hard Drive failing. Sometimes you only see it once or twice, but I've seen systems where it repeats itself many times,...and then things get bad. Just another thing to have a look for Hope that helps. Hi Peter, That's interesting, I was always under the impression that Microsoft would not allow Windows to be installed on an external drive, because of licensing , etc. But thinking more about this, using Parallels and creating a VM would work as you are using the Parallels software on your Mac to access the Windows on the external drive. From Parallels support forum: Parallels Desktop can create virtual machines on any connected networked or physical drive. Create a custom virtual machine and set the location to the other drive where you want the virtual machine to be saved. Parallels will warn you: The virtual machine files are located either on a mounted volume or on a network share. Make sure this volume or network share is mounted to your Mac all the time the virtual machine is running. Otherwise, Parallels Desktop may work incorrectly and the data inside the virtual machine may become damaged. The file with the Virtual Machine (Windows 7) sits on the external drive; the Parallels application sits on the Mac’s internal drive. You need to remember to plug the drive in when you start Parallels, otherwise Parallels will ask me where the VM lives :-) Cheers, Ronni 17 MacBook Pro Intel Core i7 2.66GHz / 4GB / 1067 MHz DDR3 / 500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200rpm OS X 10.6.3 Snow Leopard Windows 7 Ultimate (under sufferance) -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au

Before I jump in and break a leg (or the old PC) do you think a simple transplant of the old PC (Windows XP) hard drive directly to a USB caddy would work (via VMWare) from my Snow Leopard iMac? Retaining all the old files and MOS etc? But given my success rate with external drives on my Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06 GHz 4 MB iMac I shouldn't even try --. The tracks are wav format. I have latest version of windows media player, flip for mac, QuickTime pro, QuickTime 7 and Perian installed. OS is 10.6.4. I have had trouble getting the cd to play on Windows computers, but have succeeded on two that have Windows 7 installed. I'm reluctant to install Windows OS and software on the hard drive of my 17 MacBook Pro. Can it be installed on an external hard-drive, and (assuming the cd works) will I be able to listen to it by putting it in the dvd slot on my MacBook and using Windows on the external drive? Notwithstanding the various considerations regarding the playability of the WV files on that CD, the answer to your original question is Yes, if you use virtualisation software such as Parallels Desktop, VMWare or VirtualBox. All you need to do is designate the external drive as the location of your Virtual Machine when you are creating it. It is also possible to create the VM on your internal HD, move it to your external drive, then tell your software the new location. The file with the Virtual Machine (Windows 7) sits on the external drive; the Parallels application sits on the Mac's internal drive. You need to remember to plug the drive in when you start Parallels, otherwise Parallels will ask me where the VM lives :-) Cheers, Ronni 17 MacBook Pro Intel Core i7 2.66GHz / 4GB / 1067 MHz DDR3 / 500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200rpm OS X 10.6.3 Snow Leopard Windows 7 Ultimate (under sufferance) -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au No virus found in this incoming message. Mail queries
Hi Wamuggians! I am currently in Europe in a situation where I have to download my emails look at them later when I am not connected to the internet. I get quite a few emails that have html (?) boxes in them and they are blank when I look at my emails without internet connection. I have Mail/Preferences/Viewing : Display remote images in HTML messages (requires additional network access to display) ticked, but this obviously means I have to be connected to view. Now I may be wrong here, but I believe that when I was using Eudora, I could download, view later without connection see all these html boxes with their info I would expect that Mail would do the same as well. Am I right is there a way of setting this on (I can't see any other options though)? Another issue I will have is that I am using my Macbook Air while travelling this is the first time I have set up Mail used it on this laptop. When I get back home, I will probably want to transfer all the emails sent received back to my main Macbook Pro working computer. If these files have the same code as others on the Macbook Pro, will they get rejected when I copy paste them, or will they still be accepted? A third issue I have had was that I was not able to send emails for a long while. I was able to receive only had to use webmail to reply, which was a pain. Highway1 told me that this was sort of usual due to something to do with the local server not accepting something or other Is this right - have other travellers had this problem? I am in one place now have got their outgoing mail server address, so it is not a problem, but it was a pain for a while it may be a problem in the future when I am moving around again. Hi All I would like to know if there are any members of the group that hold classes for or teach Photo Shop Elements. I understand a little but would like some 'hands on' if possible. Have you set up the mail program to leave messages on the server. In that case you can download them to as many macs as you want to when you get home. If you use an IMAP account, such as mobile me or google mail, you can also have copies of the emails you send as the programs sync email rather than downloading it. A third issue I have had was that I was not able to send emails for a long while. I was able to receive only had to use webmail to reply, which was a pain. I am in one place now have got their outgoing mail server address, so it is not a problem, but it was a pain for a while it may be a problem in the future when I am moving around again. For this type of access whilst traveling, the server address for sending must be that of the ISP you are currently using. There is no work around, but there are other possibilities, such as webmail, or using an IMAP account such as Mobileme. In the case of IMAP accounts, you can log into the specific server of your choice for sending using your username and password. This is set up automatically for this type of account. I use this when traveling. When using Telstra 3G on my iPad, I know that the sending server is mail.big pond.com, so could change the setting, but it's rather a pain, so much simpler to use my Mobileme account. That sometimes means switching mail accounts to reply to emails, but I've been doing it for so long that it isn't a hassle.
