Hi Joe
Ronni is correct. The laptops take 2.5" drives. Though I think I do have a
500gb 2.5" drive.
Will email you offlist when I get home some time tonight and can check.
Thanks.
Kind regards
Daniel

Re: iPhone purchase

2010-11-28 Thread Daniel Kerr

Sounds like you got one of the "pro Apple" people :) (sarcasm intended).
Which is kinda funny considering that FoneZone bought out (or merged with)
NextByte a few years ago. :)
PC erasing songs?? Sounds like he needs an iTunes lesson. Lol :)

Enjoy your new iPhone!

iPhone purchase

2010-11-28 Thread KEVIN Lock

I have collected my iPhone birthday present from the FoneZone at Garden city.

We scored a new salesperson and it took around 40 minutes to get the
signup done. He asked why I was buying an iPhone. 'Do you have an
Apple Mac Computer?' Strange!

During the final stages of setting up the contract the store manager
also asked why I was buying an iPhone, 'because most people don't
know the poor things about the iPhone and don't want to be told'.

As I remember, he listed several problems.miniature SIM card; the
battery cannot be removed, when transferring songs from a PC it wipes
previous loaded tunes. He also informed us that there are other
better phones.

probably not the best salesperson.

Thanks Ronni,

You and Daniel are always generous with your valuable time.

I went through all the steps you both suggested and finally reset the
AirPort to clear out any previous settings. And it now works!

The Set-up manual you pointed me to suggested that as a solution.

Regards and thanks again.

Good afternoon all,

Last week I bought Adobe Photoshop Elements 9, its a great application but I
find that I have no use for it (not enough advantages over what I am already
using). It sells for $149.94 If anyone is interested I would like to recoup
the $118 I paid for it.

which is next week Tuesday 7th December at 7.30pm.

iPhone - Telstra NextG CapPlan $49, with 500MB data

2010-11-28 Thread Neil Houghton

Hi all,

Kevins recent email reminded me of something that is niggling me.

I recently (27 August) bought a new iPhone4 (at the AppleStore in Hay
street) and signed up, in store, to the Telstra NextG CapPlan $49 which,
with the special iPhone deal on at the time, was supposed to include 500MB
of data (I got the 32GB iPhone4 which had a $299 up-front payment).

The Apple guy was very apologetic about the fact that he couldn't set-up the
Telstra account online (because Telstra wouldn't give them access to that
system?!) so I had to sit there for around 20 minutes as the Apple guy
patiently dealt with whatever Telstra moron was on the other end of the
phone. There were a couple of moments where the Apple guy seemed to have to
explain to the Telstra guy just how the plan worked:

"no, no, that's not applicable to this plan - this is what it says on your
(Telstra's) website!"

Anyway, he finally declared it set-up, we activated the SIM and I made sure
I made my first phone call before I left the AppleStore.

What is niggling me, is that my bills are actually showing as:

NextG CapPlan $49: $39.00
3G Data Pack 200MB: $10.00
3G Data Pack Promotional offer: $5.00cr

Giving a monthly total: $44.00

So, one the one hand, I seem to only have a 200MB data allowance - whereas I
was told, at sign-up, that the Telstra NextG CapPlan $49 for the iPhone
included a 500MB data allowance - but, on the other hand, I seem to be
getting $5/month discount on the data plan.

So far, I haven't been downloading much data - I'm always connected
wirelessly at home and (so far) don't do that much away from home - so it
hasn't been a problem - but, given Telstra's exorbitant data rates, I would
hate to one month use more than 200MB and get hit with a huge bill.

I am trying to work out what went wrong with the sign-up - but the Telstra
contract I signed at the AppleStore, under Mobile Plan details, just says:

Other: $49 NextG Cap

With no mention of included data allowances.

200MB was the data allowance on this plan before they announced the increase
in data allowances at the end of July - the allowance was increased to 500MB
if you signed up between 30 July and 30 September - so I was well within
this envelope.

Of course the plans have all changed since then, so Telstra's site is of no
help (not that it ever is!).

Given that I seem to be getting a "3G Data Pack Promotional offer" - I am
wondering if that is how they implemented the increased data allowances in
their (very confusing) system - eg, if the $49 plan had been implemented as
advertised would it show something like:

NextG CapPlan $49: $39.00
3G Data Pack 500MB: $20.00
3G Data Pack Promotional offer: $10.00cr

Giving a monthly total: $49.00

(I'm just guessing here!)

Is there anyone else out there who signed up for the Telstra NextG CapPlan
$49 between 30 July and 30 September who could tell me how their bill is
made up?

I guess at the moment I'm wondering whether to leave things as is and save
$5/month (given I seem to be staying below 200MB, at present) or chase it up
to get the plan, as advertised, with 500MB data (which should remove any
excess data worries) - and, presumably, be up for another $5/month.

Any feedback gratefully received ;o)

Cheers

Re: AR Drone Launches.. tomorrow

2010-11-28 Thread Maher Kim
John

I first started my enquiries through parrot USA but they sent it to me from
the U.K.’s store and it took about 14 calendar days. Battery life is about 10
to 15 min but it recharges very quickly. It is very hardy because as you can
imagine when you first get it everything is self-taught. When you first start
it hovers about 1 m above the starting point. I watched MacBreak Weekly every
week and the episode they showed this Andy had it in his home and it was so
funny. I have the controls on my iPad and my iPhone which all work well.

 Hi Reg Whitely,

The AR Drone is set to launch tomorrow!

From tomorrow AR.Drone will be available in Australia for $349 and will be
initially sold through Telstra and Fone Zone stores.

We are working hard to get the online store up and running but the initial
launch will just be with Telstra and Fone Zone.

Good luck tomorrow in getting your hands on one of the first units!

While you wait for tomorrow's release why not check out this great new

December monthly meeting

2010-11-28 Thread Peter Hinchliffe

Don't forget to come along tomorrow night to hear our special guest David
Johnson talk about the business of creating and publishing iPhone software.
This is quite a departure from our usual line of topics. All the tools you need
to get started are available to you for free, and are either readily
installable on your computer or downloadable from Apple's website, sos if you
are in any way curious about what is involved with getting started in this
fascinating branch of creativity on your Mac, please come along tomorrow night
and listen to what David has to say.

Also, a quick reminder that the annual WAMUG Barbecue will be held on Sunday,
12 December in the grounds of the old Heathcote Hospital. If you intend to come
along, please reply to the WAMUG list by 7th December at the latest so we can
get a reasonable idea of numbers.

free _old_ mac laptop stuff

2010-11-28 Thread Mark Secker
Doing a clean and throw of old stuff from my personal IT hoardings

I have a couple of old G3 iBooks and an even older Duo Dock laptop sitting
around doing nothing. If anyone want's to grab them for parts or project or
what ever please feel welcome to email me off list.

Sorry can't remember the exact specs on any of these three.

Both the iBooks boot up (I think I have 10.3 or 10.4 on them) but have
intermittent internal monitor failure issues (probably backlight) , that
said when I was using them as network testing stations about a half year
back they ran for weeks at a time without backlight issues and they work
fine on external monitors when they did occasionally lose the backlight.

There's one mini vga to vga adaptor that will fit either of them.

The Duo Dock Š I last booted it up about 2 years ago I believe it runs
system 9 but I don't know if it still boots. It had all the externals -
docking station and monitor, keyboard/mouse stolen about 5 years back
(would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when they tried to boot
that up sans processor)

No installer disks or other media for any of these units.

There are only 2 power supplies (the old "yo-yo" style units) between the
three computers but I might have a third one in my obsolete spare parts box
at work.

Obviously at this age none of them can function on their included original
batteries.

Free for the taking, I'd prefer someone to grab the lot but will split
otherwise.
Can be picked up Yokine/Mt Hawthorn area evenings or from UWA during the
week.

Re: AirPort - creating a network

2010-11-28 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Lloyd,

You connect ALL cables including the Ethernet cable connected to your Belkin to
Airport Express BEFORE plugging Airport Express into Power Outlet.
After connecting the Ethernet & USB Printer cable, plug into power outlet.

Then open Airport Utility and setup & "Create a Wireless Network"

If Airport Express is still not showing in Airport Utility.
Temporarily, connect an ethernet cable from your computer to the AirPort
Express (AX) to see if that helps AirPort Utility "see" the AX.

You have not given details of your Belkin ADSL.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: AirPort - creating a network

2010-11-28 Thread Lloyd White

Thanks Daniel,

I started with AirPort utility and it scans and reports that "Air-port
utility was unable to find any AirPort wireless devices. Make sure the
AirPort wireless device you want to set up is plugged in. (It is ) and in
range of your computer (within half a metre) and then click rescan and try
again."

Same message every time. The three buttons at the bottom - Manual Setup, Go
back and Continue are greyed out.

My version of AirPort utility is 5.5.1 and the Airport is older; would that
be the problem?

I have tried various ports on the Belkin and changed cables and moved the
AirPort around.

Could it be that my Belkin ADSL is not compatible with AirPort?

Hi Lloyd

You don't set the Airport up from within System Preferences, you do it from
the Airport Setup Utility within Utilities folder.

Re: iTunes Video

2010-11-28 Thread cm

Hi Adrian,

The sanctioned method is to connect an Apple TV to your television (RSP A$ 129
http://store.apple.com/au/browse/home/shop_ipod/family/apple_tv).

You can then stream the video using Air Play from either iTunes or your iPhone
4. I found Air Play a bit flakey from my iPhone 3GS at first, but got it going
with some fiddling.

Cheers,
Carlo

Re: new iPhone

2010-11-28 Thread cm

Something I forgot to add, Kevin, was that I chose the large quota so that I
could use the iPhone for internet tethering if I was out and about or at a
client's site. Internet tethering is where a computer, such as a MacBook or
iMac, connects to the internet over the 3G cell phone network, using the iPhone
as a modem. This has in fact come in very handy on a few occasions.

Cheers,

Hi Kevin,

I have 500Mb but hardly dent it. At home and work the phone always locks onto
wireless. I do all my e-mailing through my computer anyway. Only a few push
notifications come through the phone plan, it almost seems a waste for my
needs.

It is reassuring though having the reserve there in case i do need it.

 Eugene

Re: Domain Name Registration / Web Hosting

2010-11-28 Thread Matthew Healey

Hi Carlo,

( I posted this to the list a while ago in response to another question regard
hosting... It all pretty much still applies. )

I've been thinking about your request for a few days now try to work out how to
best respond. I could easily give you a URL or two of various hosting companies
(which I will do anyway at the end of this email) but I figured it would be
better to tell you WHY one host is better than another. There are a few things
that you need to take into account when choosing a web host, and they are; in
no particular order...

1. We're not fancy, but we cheep!
Beware of the host that is too cheap, for they will be running a massively
oversubscribed network. They have to make up in numbers, what they lack in
profit margin. This means that you could be sharing a single server with
literally thousands of other web sites. Your site will be sloww.

2. It costs a fortune, it must be good.
Just because something is expensive doesn't mean you are getting anything other
than shafted. It just means the company in question has a particular interest
in parting fools and their money. If a web hosts pricing is significantly more
expensive for roughly the same advertised service, it usually means it's run by
a board of directors that are still annoyed with Theodore for breaking up
Standard Oil.

3. I take the money, you do the work.
When you rent web space from a company, make sure they actually own and run the
servers you are hosting on. A lot of web hosts out there are just resell other
companies products. This makes troubleshooting a real pain as you need to go
through a third party to fix a pesky script. It also means that there is
someone in process taking money but not providing any value. Been there, done
that. Won't do it again.

4. Everybody loves good neighbours.
Look for local companies, that have local support. The last thing you want to
have to do it wait until their time zone wakes up to lodge a support ticket.
Keeping it local also means you can perhaps go and visit them. I have gotten
many 'unsupported' things done by rocking up with a carton of beer/redbull on a
Friday afternoon. Most local companies will go out of their way to help you.

5. Everybody loves good neighbours, part 2 (or... It's a long way to Tipperary)
Look for local companies that have their servers on the same continent as your
customers. I have the displeasure of of supporting a retail shop who insist on
working with a local web design house that run their servers out of Texas! The
shop wonders why their site loads so slowly...

I had a few more points, but the email was staring to get a bit lengthy. Sort
of like that old Uncle that never seems to get that he should have stopped
talking about 10 minutes ago. With all that in mind, you will recall I said I
would give you a URL to peruse. Well... here it is.

http://www.webinabox.net.au

Lets cover the points;
1. Reasonably priced to keep subscription ratios low and equipment quality high.
2. First born child not required as down-payment.
3. Their servers, their switches, their routers, their responsibility, their
control.
4. WA boys born and bread. (Except one of them, but he's a bit weird anyway...)
5. All their primary gear is in WA. They do have backups overseas which is a
good thing.

I use them for all my clients hosting, and they also host the WAMUG web site
and mailing list. Give them a call. (Shane, Trent or Andrew)

 Hey Severin,

 Don't be hard on yourself.
Advancing years is a 'privilege' not an 'excuse' ;-) … especially for a
man who graduated with BSc (Hons) in Physics and went on to complete a PhD.
Plus numerous achievements throughout the years.
