Re: ipad not charging and contacts question

2010-12-15 Thread lynnkoh

many thanks to all for your advises .

other than that, i am loving my new apple toy.

which reminds me of another question, about contacts this time.

occasionally, i find that i cannot add a new contact after turning it on after
when i have put my ipad to sleep.

it will only let me edit existing contact, but not add a new one.

i will have to restart my iapd then it will let me save an added contact.

sorry for all the questions.

thanks.

Re: ipad not charging when plugged into computer

2010-12-15 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Lynn,

If you don't believe me, believe Apple.

iPad: Charging the battery:

Note: Some USB 2.0 ports and accessories do not provide enough power to charge
iPad. When this occurs the message "Not Charging" appears in the status bar
next to the battery icon.

Cheers,
Ronni

Lynn

My iPad came with the advice to always charge it via the mains charger as
usually connection to USB port will not provide enough current to charge the
iPad. This advice was in the original printed manual.

Perfectly normal Lynn,

/Quote:
This really shouldn’t be a shocking thing to anyone with some basic common
sense. The iPhone and iPod can charge via USB, but they’re tiny devices
compared to the iPad. The iPad has a mammoth battery that’s 5 times bigger than

that with USB docks that vary with power ratings and low-end computers with
poor quality USB outputs, and you’ve got a scenario where you can’t charge via
USB. Scandal!

Fact is, this device should be looked at more like a standalone device, not
just another accessory to dock to your computer. When you travel, bring the
charger with you – no differently than you would with any other portable gizmo
that’s not USB powered. And when you’re home, charge it via the outlet as well.
Only dock it to the computer when you want to sync, not charge.

Besides, charging via USB is going to be slow at best anyways. Why not juice it
up quickly?

Hmmm. That is a worry. Israel and the US might have created a double edge sword
which will harm computers everywhere.

On the other hand my optimistic self sees this as an opportunity. A massive
switch to Apple or Unix by utilities companies would render the virus harmless.
I know the US military already uses Apple computers in many critical areas for
security reasons.

Just had one now and thanks to warnings from you guys, my wife was on
alert and sussed him before the end of the first sentence. Anyway
conversation went like this.

Q "Good evening, I believe you're having computer problems, what
Windows operating system are you running"?

A "Windows 3.11"

He says "just wait, let me check that one..ah that isn't a Windows
operating system"

Ha ha, "yes it is, from 1980, still works fine"..

Q "it must be Vista, XP, or Windows 7, there is no others on my
list"

Hi, Ronni, thanks for the quick reply.

OK. Here's what's happening. The trackpad update was already installed.
I held the button down until the message 'trackpad connected' came up. I
thought, wow, that was fast and easy. However, I played with it for a few
minutes, and then - back to nothing. Held the button down again, and the
message 'trackpad off' appeared. I kept trying this - it would connect,
but would only stay connected for a minute or so. The battery level was
91% when I started, hopefully that is sufficient to keep it going.

At no point did the green light blink. Holding the button down only made
the green light appear and stay steady about 5 seconds and then go off
again. And still Bluetooth in System Preferences says that the trackpad
 is recognised and connected.

Hi Pat,

You are using at least OS X 10.6.4? You don't have "USB Overdrive" installed do
you as it is incompatible & needs to be uninstalled using the uninstaller.?
Have you tried other batteries?

I don't really know what to suggest, as I'm not sure what is happening here. It
sounds as though it might not be paired correctly.
Perhaps start again … try Restarting the Mac Mini and re-pair the magic
trackpad.

To re-pair, you will first need to un-pair via blue tooth, then go back into
system preferences click on Trackpad, click on “set up bluetooth trackpad”,
make sure that your power is on and then follow the instructions.

Re: Fed up

2010-12-15 Thread Bill Parker

Adrian,

This is exactly why I am browned off with Telstra - it's OK of things
work smoothly but when they do not, don't expect much from Telstra,
even if you can find the right section. I complained about this
Bigpond vs Telstra nonsense and actually found a 1800 number where the
staff actually understood me. That number has gone and so has the
department, the name of which now escapes me.

Westnet ? They obviously use either Optus or Telstra to provide the
ADSL service through the wires - which is it? A change would add yet
another usueless modem to the box on the floor. What a waste.

The service I have had with the Telstra/Bigpond bundle for the last
2 years has been really good--no complaints with them at all,
however, I paid an account in October while I was in the eastern
states and had to pay it again when I got home because they claim
not to have received even though my bank has confirmed that they
have. As it stands now no one in Telstra can do anything about it
except to refer me on to BigPond who immediately refer me on to
Telstra. My next step is the Telecommunications Ombudsman.

Westnet can be very accommodating and do make a lot of noise while
you wait in their 'phone queue about how responsive they are and
reliable their service is yet I have been waiting over 2 weeks now
for them to get back to me about setting up a personal webspace -
a pretty simple thing, supposedly and one that, incidentally they
seem to have some conflict about deciding just how much you, as a
user are entitled to (stating in one place in relation to the plan
I am subscribed to, an allowance of 1GB and in another 20MB).

Recently too, the actual service (ADSL2+) seems to have become
rather flakey and I quite often have transient connection problems
to their email server, for example; accounts I access on another
server will be unaffected at the same time that I have a problem
with the Westnet account. Maybe this is related to the exchange
somehow but in the first instance it's still a Westnet problem as
they are the service provider.
Well, maybe not in 'the first instance' - that would be my problem
I guess?
And when Mail on my MBP is having a hard time doing its job I do
have the option of turning off my Wifi connection on the phone and
accessing my email through my 3G Telstra account :P

Perhaps I'll have another chat to Westnet today …

 Hi Pat,

When you turn the Track Pad on does the green light start blinking?
 If not:

When you turn it on, the green light goes on but it does not start
blinking, and trackpad in system preferences can't find your trackpad.
Hold down the 'on' button on the trackpad until the light starts to blink.
This is a reset that forces the trackpad to 'unlink' with whatever it
thinks it is linked to, and to make itself discoverable.
Once the green light is blinking, just go to trackpad in system
preferences and it will quickly discover your new device.

Hi, Ronni,

Yes, that is it exactly. Or I should say, it gets recognised and connected but
then looses that recognition and connection within about a minute.
