Hi Ruben,

You have not given enough information for people to assist you, we are 'pushing

OK, we now know you are running OS X 10.6.5, but on what? What Ports are you
using? And what software is running the music?
What Amplifier, Speakers, etc. Give all the information required so people can
assist you.

Its like 'pulling teeth' sometimes on WAMUG. Emails back and forth, trying to
drag information out of people.
People expect us to be 'Mind Readers' … we aren't!
We can't see what you have and what you are using, you have to give us all the

Hi Ruben,

Perhaps you are picking up static with the cable from the computer to the
amplifier. Depending on the version of Mac you have, you may have an optical
digital audio out jack. In provisioned models this comes from the same
headphone jack as the standard headphone out. One just needs a optical digital
cable and, of course, the correct input on your home theatre or amplifier. I
can't tell from your inscrutable, unexpected hardware whether you have optical
digital audio out or not, :-) but later model iMacs and MacBooks have this.

 Hi Everyone.

I've been considering getting a sound output (either card or USB) for my
computer since my built in one can have an annoying scratchy sound when cpu
is being used. I'm currently using a 3.5mm output jack to a fairly decent
quality old amplifier connected to good quality but again old speakers. My
main audio use is listening to music and although I'm not an audiophile I'm
definitely a fair bit more picky than the average user. At the moment my
current consideration is the ADS Tech Instant Music for Mac since I can be
sure it will work on Mac OS and it's reasonably priced. Like many other
products it has inputs to allow for recording from vinyl or other sources
 but
I'm only really interested in the output.

Does anyone have any experience with this USB device or perhaps other
possible devices I might be interested in or maybe just some advice for me?

 Thanks
 Ruben

The problem with SafeSleep is that if data is being written to the hard drive
when you select 'sleep',
SafeSleep encounters an error that causes the machine to hang in sleep.

Could this be your problem?

Try quitting Entourage before selecting 'sleep'.

Thanks for the advice guys. The main thing I don't like about my current setup
is that I sometimes (depending on what the cpu is doing) get an annoying
scratching sound coming through the speakers. It's not terribly prominent and
is usually covered up by music or sound in video except where the soundtrack is
at a quiet point and it can also be reduced by turning the volume down on my
amplifier and the computer volume right up to compensate. Basically I'm just
after a device that won't give lower quality sound to what I currently get and
will also get rid of the scratching sound, allowing me to control my volume
completely through the Apple Volume Control.

I'm running intel 10.6.5 at the moment but my hardware is probably not what
you'd expect. I do have USB2. firewire 400 and pci slots available.

Thanks

Re: 27"IiMac - screen wake-up problem

2011-01-12 Thread cm
Hi Neil,

It does sound like a software problem. Perhaps the screen brightness is being
set to zero. Have you tried fiddling with the brightness buttons as a
work-around.

Another potential work-around is to enable screen sharing on your iMac and then
log-in from your laptop. You could then either try to revive the iMac or do an
orderly shutdown.

I personally would do the upgrade to 10.6.6. If it is a problem known to Apple,
they may have put a fix in the upgrade. Failing that, if sufficiently many
other users are having the problem a fix will eventually be released.

Good luck,
Carlo

RE: 27"IiMac - screen wake-up problem

2011-01-12 Thread Crisp, Peter

Hi Neil, that is a very clear articulation of a problem you're
experiencing and sorry to hear it. I'm also sorry I don't have any
wisdom on this, but am imminently going to get myself into a 27" iMac
and wonder if this Sleep issue will pervade my new machine (to be). Also
do you have any other comments or wisdom about ordering such a machine
and any recommended upgrades (Applecare, wireless or Bluetooth devices).
I still have my old Magic Mouse that I got for SWMBO's Macbook (not very
magical actually) as constant Bluetooth dropouts and ravenous battery
consumption (1-2 weeks between replacements) led me to get a Logitech
Nano VX which is brilliant - and still on the original batteries from 9
months ago! But I believe the iMac 27" comes with the Magic Mouse
'thrown in' and presumably now non-problematic as I observed from 12
months ago as I see no chatter about it on this forum.

Thanks for any feedback.

Regards

Peter..

Hi all,

A strange problem this..

A few days ago, my iMac wouldn't wake from sleep properly - in actual
fact,
the screen didn't wake-up (though I didn't realise that at the time) - I
could hear the disc going and, since I have the Mac set to require
password
on wake from either sleep or screen saver, I should get a login window -
but
the screen remained black, with no mouse cursor.

I tried a few random key strokes (to try and "wake" it) and got the
"beep"
that tells you that is not appropriate (ie I needed to login first).

At the time, I was worried my screen had died (and me just a month out
of
warranty!) and decided a forced shut-down and re-boot should be tried.
However, as I was pressing the power button, the log-in window appeared
(together with a message about incorrect password - obviously referring
to
my random keystrokes when the screen was black).

I then logged in without problem and everything was OK - I have since
surmised that when I went to force the shut-down I actually pressed the
power button twice - which put the computer to sleep and then
re-awakened it
(together with the screen, this time).

At the time, I just put it down to some random gremlin - was relieved my
screen was not dead - and forgot about it!

Until this morning...

Go to wake up the computer, can hear activity but the screen stays blank
-
this time I try just blindly entering my password and hitting return -
the
login obviously works and I can hear entourage (left running when the
mac
goes to sleep) retrieving emails from various accounts - but the screen
stays black.

I fired up the laptop and the iMac can be seen on the network. I try
Google
(from the laptop) and find a 5 page MacRumours forum on "27"iMac won't
wake
from sleep" stretching from to November 2009 (the vintage of my iMac)
through to December 2010 (ie, basically, now):

This showed LOTS of people having sleep problems - though the problems
and
circumstances are far from identical - several of the posts seemed
similar
to my problem and the consensus seemed to be that the screen was not
waking
up and that perhaps the computer had failed to go completely to sleep.

This reminded my of my power button pressing previously - so (more
observantly this time) I pressed the power button once and did, in fact,
hear the computer go to sleep - I then pressed the button again and the
computer awoke correctly and presented me with the login window.

Unfortunately, though there are MANY theories on the forum - there
appears
to be no clear cause/solution:

Some people have blamed USB hubs and wireless keyboards - not applicable
in
my case.

Some people point to hardware and have had Apple replacing power
supplies,
logic boards (sometimes multiple replacements) and even new computers -
this
may fix it for some people - but others have the problem re-occur - even
over new computers.

Others point to this as indicating a software problem and advocate
complete
re-installations of the operating system - again this has worked for
some
(or appeared to work for a while) but not for others - and the problem
seems
to span several versions of Snow Leopard.

For myself - I had the computer for over a year before the problem
appeared
- but it then re-appeared within days.

I haven't recently changed any hardware (& don't have a usb hub
connected).

I haven't had any major software changes (haven't yet gone to 10.6.6) -
though I may have installed a few small programs/utilities?

I tend to feel that the problem MAY be down to the sleep process hanging
(after the screen has been put to sleep but before the computer has been
fully put to sleep) as one strange thing I have noticed is some
entourage
error messages reporting failure to connect to server - at times when
the
computer should have been asleep

Go to wake up the computer, can hear activity but the screen stays blank -
this time I try just blindly entering my password and hitting return - the
login obviously works and I can hear entourage (left running when the mac
goes to sleep) retrieving emails from various accounts - but the screen
stays black.

I fired up the laptop and the iMac can be seen on the network. I try Google
(from the laptop) and find a 5 page MacRumours forum on "27"iMac won't wake
from sleep" stretching from to November 2009 (the vintage of my iMac)
through to December 2010 (ie, basically, now):

This showed LOTS of people having sleep problems - though the problems and
circumstances are far from identical - several of the posts seemed similar
to my problem and the consensus seemed to be that the screen was not waking
up and that perhaps the computer had failed to go completely to sleep.

This reminded my of my power button pressing previously - so (more
observantly this time) I pressed the power button once and did, in fact,
hear the computer go to sleep - I then pressed the button again and the
computer awoke correctly and presented me with the login window.

Unfortunately, though there are MANY theories on the forum - there appears
to be no clear cause/solution:

Some people have blamed USB hubs and wireless keyboards - not applicable in
my case.

Some people point to hardware and have had Apple replacing power supplies,
logic boards (sometimes multiple replacements) and even new computers - this
may fix it for some people - but others have the problem re-occur - even
over new computers.

Others point to this as indicating a software problem and advocate complete
re-installations of the operating system - again this has worked for some
(or appeared to work for a while) but not for others - and the problem seems
to span several versions of Snow Leopard.

For myself - I had the computer for over a year before the problem appeared
- but it then re-appeared within days.

I haven't recently changed any hardware (& don't have a usb hub connected).

I haven't had any major software changes (haven't yet gone to 10.6.6) -
though I may have installed a few small programs/utilities?

I tend to feel that the problem MAY be down to the sleep process hanging
(after the screen has been put to sleep but before the computer has been
fully put to sleep) as one strange thing I have noticed is some entourage
error messages reporting failure to connect to server - at times when the
computer should have been asleep - but these are isolated and not recurring
on the 20 minute schedule that entourage checks for mail.

Anybody else experienced or experiencing similar problems?

Any ideas?

At present it is not too big a problem since (unlike some posters) I don't
have to force shutdown to get out of the problem - and it's only happened
twice - but if it starts to get more frequent it could get very annoying!

Cheers

We have just had a drop out. I have internet back up but phone is a no go. I
think it is the auth. Password which, apparently is not the same as the modem
password (modem Netcomm NB9WMAXX). I think the best thing to do is reload from
Time machine but where are the settings held?

Hi Ruben,

If your current set-up (output jack to amp to speakers) is working OK - then
perhaps telling us what you DON'T like about this setup (ie what you are
hoping to improve) may help people make suitable suggestions/comments.

Re: ADS Tech Instant Music for Mac as sound output

2011-01-12 Thread David Paul

Hi Ruben

Sorry I am not familiar with the ADS Tech device personally. However, if as
you say, what you want is something to improve the sound quality from the
computer stored sound files rather than recording from analogue sources to
the computer then a USB DAC would be a better option. There are many
available from cheap to stratospheric!

Something like the Carat UD! Or Carat HC1V might be worth looking at. Simply
HiFi in Hay St Subiaco used to sell these for $199 and $299 respectively.

The HRT Music Streamer USB DAC is getting rave reviews too, again this is
around $199.

Firewire DACs are even better but more expensive!

Ruben,

difficult to give any advice because you don't give any information about your
Mac (PowerPC/Intel) or your OS or the programs that generate the music.

ADS Tech Instant Music for Mac as sound output

2011-01-12 Thread Dark1

Hi Everyone.

I've been considering getting a sound output (either card or USB) for my
computer since my built in one can have an annoying scratchy sound when cpu is
being used. I'm currently using a 3.5mm output jack to a fairly decent quality
old amplifier connected to good quality but again old speakers. My main audio
use is listening to music and although I'm not an audiophile I'm definitely a
fair bit more picky than the average user. At the moment my current
consideration is the ADS Tech Instant Music for Mac since I can be sure it will
work on Mac OS and it's reasonably priced. Like many other products it has
inputs to allow for recording from vinyl or other sources but I'm only really
interested in the output.

Does anyone have any experience with this USB device or perhaps other possible
devices I might be interested in or maybe just some advice for me?

Thanks
Ruben

If anyone is interested I have the current versions of Aperture 3 & Final Cut
Express 4 with certified AppleTraining Series Manual, both are virtually unused
but unfortunately I find I cant use them (don't have the use for such
professional applications), I would like to dispose of them and recover as much
as possible of the $633 (Software and Manuals) that they cost me. If anyone is
interested in any or all please contact me off list.

Re: iPad and overseas travel

Hi Laura

Yes a prepaid sim purchased in the country you are travelling in will be the
cheapest option – need to check coverage though as in some places, Canada for
instance, coverage can be very regional.

I found I had to do this with my Telstra Pre-Paid micro-SIM card as it had not
activated while connected to iTunes before I had to leave on a trip.

So In Settings > Cellular Data > APN Settings > APN I typed "telstra.iph"

Check with your provider what the APN settings are.

Given that this information was in September last, is there anything more to
add?

I've just returned from a visit to NSW and, being the first time a SIM card was
necessary in my iPad, I used the Telstra iPad starter pack. I would have
preferred not to go with Telstra but had no option to get the coverage I
needed. The result was excellent.

Can I continue to use my Telstra Pre-Paid micro-SIM card while travelling in
France? If so, I'll continue to recharge it between now and when I go away,
even though while at home it is not required. I've just checked the settings
and the APN setting is shown as telstra.iph as indicated in the above email. Do
I need to do anything else?

Of course, as Susan mentioned in one of her related emails. WiFi access is
readily available in cafés and elsewhere overseas. But it would be good to have
confirmation of something that can be arranged before departure and which is
not going to break the bank with excessive charges.

Any further advice would be much appreciated.

Kind regards
Laura
