As much as I hate to not give sales to stores, if you are looking at
Aperture it's actually cheaper to download it from the MacStore if you're
not worried about not getting a disk and little manual.
It's $249 in the shops, $229 on the education store and $99.99 to download
 it from the MacStore.

I'm not even going to get started on why they make it so cheap, as I don't
want to start a flame war.

But just thought I'd point it out.

Re: Kogan bets $1 million dollars

2011-03-07 Thread Eugene
My thoughts:When Apple was a computer company it tried to sell its products through companies like Harvey Norman and Myers but this failed miserably. The sales people were largely unfamiliar with the product and they were just as likely to deride the Mac and encourage you to buy a PC.Apple wanted to control its sales so it developed its web shop and started to open its own stores and closed up its outlets in many stores. Then suddenly something changed - the iPod. Apple became an electronics focussed company not just a computer company. Slowly iPods begun to be sold again in Myers and Harveys. The iPhone broadened Apple’s appeal through the halo effect and the Macs became cool products that virtually sold themselves through slick styling, exquisite OS and sound engineering.Dell proved you can become the largest PC company in the world through online orders. Will Apple close up its third party retail storers and rely just on the Web store and Apple stores? Not in the near future. The bubble hasn’t burst and Apple will continue to expand through its 3rd party retail stores. Apple will continue to innovate and introduce other products besides computers.

Re: Kogan bets $1 million dollars

2011-03-07 Thread cm
Hi all,

Just my take on this bet. Apple has been working hard to cultivate large chains
as partners. In the US it is Best Buy and Walmart. There are only about 320
Apple Stores worldwide with around 240 in the US! Australia has 10. These
numbers are way to small to be the only customer contact outlets for Apple.

Apple tends to favour retail chains that will follow the "store within a store"
concept -- which is a small area of floor space solely with Apple products and
Apple style display tables. My guess would be that Apple is looking for longer
term relationships with amenable retail chains and has no intention at all of
cutting these relationships off in two years.

As for the bet itself, it has been limited to JB Hi-Fi, not to all retail
outlets so maybe Kogan know of some unfavourable aspect of JB Hi-Fi's handling
of Apple products or of its relationship with Apple. I think more likely Kogan
is banking on the fact that Smart will not accept the bet. If Smart has no
ongoing dispute with Apple I would advise him to accept the challenge! :-)

Cheers,
Carlo

Re: restore erased files

2011-03-07 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Hugh,

If only two reboots have happened it would certainly be worth trying Data
Rescue.
I've managed to recover data from drives that were rebooted more than twice
using Data Rescue 3.

If you don't have a copy or can't borrow a copy of Data Rescue, I guess the
cost factor will be weighed against how important are the lost files?

Thanks Ronni, I fear it is much too late as part of the reason for the erase

Hi Hugh,

It's important to stop using the computer immediately or as soon after the
trash was emptied.
Shut it down until you get a copy of Data Rescue 3. You have not mentioned what
version of OS your sister is running. Data Rescue 3 specifications:

• Mac OS X 10.4.11 or later, 512MB RAM minimum, 1GB or more recommended
• PowerPC G4, G5, or Intel, 1.0GHz processor minimum
• To prevent your files from being overwritten, Data Rescue 3 requires you to
have a second hard drive to recover
to

"Because the operating system doesn't immediately re-use space from deleted
files, we can recover trash Mac or recover deleted Mac files after emptying
trash bin for a considerable time afterwards. But the probability of recovering
trash Mac successfully decreases substantially the longer we use the computer
after selecting ‘Empty Trash’ option, because the Mac OS X may overwrite this
little free space very quickly with temp files. The greatest chance of Mac
trash recovery is to stop using the Mac machine once we emptied trash bin. It
is possible to recover deleted Mac files after emptying trash bin folder."

Re: New MacBook Pro: Should I order 2.2 or 2.3 GHz i7?

2011-03-07 Thread Robin Belford
To put briefly, if browsing, email, a bit of text editing and maybe
spreadsheets is the usage then there is no need for the fastest.
If your work involves multimedia editing, e.g. Aperture, Final Cut Pro,
Photoshop, iMovie, etc. then there is a benefit to be gained from additional
processor speed and L2 cache.

Re: New MacBook Pro: Should I order 2.2 or 2.3 GHz i7?

2011-03-07 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Peta,

I would imagine because of my reply further down in this email.
If you are heavy user in Photoshop and Final Cut Pro, I would suggest the
 2.3GHz.

The 2.3GHz CPU has a larger L3 cache (8MB vs 6MB.) The increase in cache is
usually more important than the minimal increase in speed, depending on
 what
you do in Photoshop & FCP.

Aperture could use the extra.

I think all vendors must be tempted...but there are risks.
I think it will happen, but I would guess more at 5-7 years.
Would a full online offering also mean a return to "base" warranty?
Lots of crystal ball stuff.

But... There are lots more important things to focus on

Re: Kogan bets $1 million dollars

2011-03-07 Thread lem1

The issue is Apples consumer products really do need a wider distribution than
simple apple centred stores.
So I expect some to simply be product stockist such as target etc, and more
upmarket services run by apple direct.

As given the turnover requirements for a Apple retail store, they just don't
suit certain market. THough I would say looking at the JB Hifi figures I think
they would have grouped in all the additional accessories people buy for their
apple products not made by Apple to get to 30%.

Re: The Glossy vs Anti-Glare … this debate has been going on for eternity

Some Professional Graphic Artists & Photographers say the Anti-Glare gives
 a
truer ‘Print’ colour than the Gloss.

The latest MBPs have high resolution displays, older MBPs you could get a
 lower resolution Anti-Glare display.

I’ve had anti-glare on my PowerBook & previous MacBook Pro, but I decided
 to
go with the Glossy Display on my current MBP.
I love the look of the glossy screen, the images have a deeper look with
 more
 contrast. blacks are really black.
