Re: iPhone has stopped opening iTunes

2011-08-15 Thread Neil Houghton
Hi John,

No, not the case for me I gave Apple $0 upfront. The Applestore were, in
this case, providing the phone as part of a Telstra $49 cap plan. Then
Telstra billed me the $299 upfront payment that corresponded to this plan
(that was how it worked at that time, the deals have all changed since
then).

The phone WAS locked to telstra and we DID go through the Telstra unlock
process it is just that we had to go through several extra steps to get
the phone showing up correctly in Telstra¹s unlock tool.

I suspect that things are different now. The my first conversations with
Applecare was convincing them that Yes I had bought a locked phone at the
Applestore and No I hadn¹t paid any money directly to the Applestore
luckily I had kept the Apple Receipt (for $0!) which I sent them.

However, I only mentioned all this as background that issue is now
resolved and the phone unlocked.

My problem is gettingiTunes to fire up automatically when I plug in the
phone to the iMac.

Cheers

Neil

Severin,

If you have an older HUAWEI E169 HSDPA (need a microscope to read the name) it
will require a hardware update. I recently bought a new MacBook Pro and had
all that stuff about DUN etc. Rang Westnet and the lady said they would change
it - they did FOC, same day. All well now. I expect the same situation may
apply to other models.

Hi Severin,

"The Apple USB modem requires Mac OS X v10.4.3 or later running in 32 bit mode"

Your new iMac runs natively in 64bit mode, so you have to boot it into 32bit
mode to get it working.

Re: iPhone has stopped opening iTunes

Neil,

When I purchased an iPhone for my son (21st), I checked prices at a couple of
stores, but settled on the Apple Store because they specifically sold all their
phones as unlocked, regardless of the carrier finally chosen. I didn't know
which plan or carrier my son wanted at the time. I would have guessed that
Telstra may have been correct (shock ;-) about it being unlocked regardless of
your plan with them.

Hi Lloyd,

You have the AirPort Express (AX) configured to join a wireless network.
In this mode the AX is connecting just like any other wireless client and is
not wirelessly extending the network.

You need to set the your Main (first) Airport Express to “Allow this Network to
be Extended"
And set second Airport Express to “Extend the Network”
Use Airport Utility setup your Network:

Trying to remember off the top of my head ...
On the Main AX

Open AirPort Utility
Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons … you should have Wireless Mode:
"Create a wireless Network"
Make sure that you have a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended"
Make note of the exact Security setting that you are using
Update to save any changes
The Main AX will restart and you should see a green light in 15-20 seconds

On the second AX (I’ll call it Remote AX)

Open AirPort Utility
Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
Wireless Mode: Extend a wireless network (If you do not see this choice, hold
down the option key on your computer as you click on the selection box)
Wireless Network Name: Exact name of your AX wireless network. (This should
appear as a choice in the setup)
Enter a check mark next to Allow wireless clients
Wireless Security: Exact same setting as your AX wireless network
Wireless Network Password: Exact same password as your AX wireless Network
Verify Password as above
Update to save changes

The AirPort AX will restart and you should get a green light in 15-20 seconds.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: apple licensing

2011-08-15 Thread Martin Hill
James,
Here's a comment I posted on a similar article a few days back where I
attempted to place Apple's policies in perspective with competitors like Amazon
which might be interesting to some. While I agree that Apple's flat 30%
commission doesn't work for some business models (ie that of middlemen such as
Amazon, WalMart or Vudu), it is fantastic for the authors, developers, content
creators themselves who can now sell their products directly to the public far
more easily. Note also that Apple is quite happy for Amazon, Walmart, Vudu and
others to keep their native apps on iOS without an easy subscription link if
they don't want to pay Apple the 30% commission:

Amazon for example is actually more of a greedy, robber-barron of a walled
garden in their own way than Apple.

After all, it was Amazon who charged a 70% commission from authors to publish
on the Kindle until Apple came along and did the unthinkable setting 30% as the
new benchmark which forced Amazon to drop their extortionate rate.

Likewise, does Amazon allow competing ebook apps on the Kindle? No, it is Apple
who is more than happy to host hundreds of ebook readers and apps such as the
Nook, Stanza (until Amazon bought and killed that marvellous product) and
dozens of other smaller publishers as well as the Kindle.

However, Apple is all about cutting out the middleman and are delighted to
allow authors to self-publish and take 70% of the profits if they make use of
Apple's in-app purchase architecture or 100% if they are willing to force
consumers to jump thru hoops at their own website.

The low barrier and convenience that Apple's in-app purchases provide end-users
will keep native apps far more profitable than web apps have ever been even
with Apple's quite legitimate commission.

-Mart

Re: iPhone has stopped opening iTunes

2011-08-15 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Neil,

Perhaps iTunesHelper is not working.

1. Connect your iPhone to your Mac
2. Open iTunes manually.
3. Go to the summary page for the iPhone, uncheck "Automatically sync when this
iPhone is connected”
4. Click "Apply" and then close iTunes completely.
DON’T disconnect the iPhone.
5. Reopen iTunes manually, go to the summary page for the iPhone,
6. Check "Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected" and click "Apply".
You should get a message that you need to start the iTunesHelper Program (if it
wasn't currently running).
7. Click OK.

Let it sync, then eject the iPhone
Disconnect the iPhone from your Mac
Re-Connect the iPhone to your Mac and see if iTunes Opens automatically.

Cheers,
Ronni

Airport Express problems

2011-08-15 Thread Lloyd White
Hi everyone,

I have an Airport Express connected by ethernet to my modem. Works well but
I want to extend the range.

I bought a second AirPort Express and plugged it in within range of the
first one. According to Apple's sales blurb that is all I needed to do but I
am getting the blinking orange light and no green light and no range
extension.

I went to Airport Utility and it recognised the two Airports so I
highlighted the new one and added it to the existing network, selecting
"connect wirelessly". Still no joy, but worse still, AirPort utility no
longer recognises the new AirPort Express.

What should I do? Clear the settings of the old AirPort and give it a new
name and try again or what?

Any suggestions will earn my everlasting gratitude!!

Lloyd

2011-08-15 Thread Michael Hawkins

Neil,

It may be that whom-ever you were dealing with at Telstra did not
understand the significance of the last digit. Depending upon the document
or record being looked at, the last digit may always be "wrong", as it is
always shown on certain records as,say,a zero (0) for security purposes.

The International Mobile Equipment Identity number ("IMEI") for a GSM
mobile phone is a 15 digit number which has 4 components:

The first 6 digits are the type approval code allocated by GSM mou when a
new mobile model has been shown to comply with all GSM recommendations and
specifications.

The next 2 digits are the code number used by the manufacturer to identify
the factory in which the phone was made.

The next 6 digits is the serial number for the phone type as determined by
the type approval code.

The last digit is used as a check digit for security and is transmitted to
the network as a zero, even though every GSM mobile phone has a unique
IMEI. Thus, for example, the actual IMIE may have a "7" as the actual last
digit, but some of the network records may replace that "7" with a "0".

Regards,

Michael Hawkins.

iPhone has stopped opening iTunes

2011-08-15 Thread Neil Houghton

Hi all,

After a prolonged troubleshooting process, I have finally got my iPhone
unlocked from Telstra. I'll give the salient details - in case it gives a
clue to the current problem.

The phone was bought at the Perth Applestore on a Telstra $49 cap plan -
which was set-up by the Apple guy while I was at the store. I'm heading
overseas shortly - so I thought I would unlock the phone to allow use of
local SIMs.

I tried the normal unlock process with Telstra but, when they put my IMEI
number into their unlock tool it kept coming up with an error message - to
the effect that the phone was not locked to Telstra - it was either unlocked
or locked to another carrier.

I told them that this was not the case, but all I got was the "that is what
the system tells me" line. Their only suggestion was to call Applecare,
which I did - they confirmed that their records showed the phone as being
locked to Telstra!!

I will spare you the endless phone calls, etc spent on trying to solve this.
I worked with an understanding and patient Applecare rep and we finally got
the phone unlocked. From what I gathered, Telstra had somehow got an error
in the IMEI number recorded against my account (a discrepancy in the last
digit) but addressing it involved (over several days) several resets of the
phone and a re-registering of the phone by Apple in the middle of the
process.

Anyway, at the end of the day I got the "Congratulations your iPhone is now
unlocked" message, got my phone all synched up again and off I went.

The problem is this:

It used to be that whenever I plugged the iPhone into the computer, it would
fire up iTunes and synch the phone.

Now it doesn't - that is, it doesn't fire up iTunes - when I fire up iTunes
manually, the synch goes ahead as normal.

I have checked in iTunes and:

The iPhone software is up to date

In the preferences/devices the "prevent from synching automatically" box is
not checked - so this is all OK and the synch DOES happen when iTunes is
started.

If I select the iPhone in the sidebar and go to the "summary" tab, the "open
iTunes when this iPhone is connected" box IS checked - but this is what is
NOT happening.

Any suggestions?

Cheers

apple licensing

2011-08-15 Thread James / Hans Kunz
just an interesting comment:

Earlier this year, Apple changed its policies to require all iOS apps offering
subscription services to share 30 percent of that revenue with Apple. The
response has been a revolt. Companies like Walmart and Amazon are building
HTML5 Web apps that are optimized to work on the iPhone and the iPad instead of
offering their wares through a native iOS apps.

A side benefit for consumers and app developers is that these apps will also
work on other devices—desktops, laptops, and competing smartphones and tablets.
Time will tell what impact this change will have on Apple's success as a
company.
