Re: Virus software?!?

2011-12-22 Thread Daniel Kerr
hi Severin

I think sometimes this goes for lots of information on the web. It's much
easier to complain and say it's all not working, whereas not many people will
actually post to say,...hey yes it works. If it works, we don't tend to go
searching for problems. Only when we have a query or something is playing up
do we tend to then look into.
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure yes sometimes things are realised too soon with
hey we think we tested it well, but lets see how it goes.
But generally I think it's not too bad.
But yes. sometimes I think you have take things with a grain of salt.
I had a similar thing today. A new client had seen two other consultants and
spent about $900 between them and no problems were really fixed. (One Mac
specialist hadn't even heard of a Time Capsule!). She got referred to me from
another regular client and was asking about Time Capsule/Time Machine and had
been told by both the consultants that it was rubbish and didn't work (mostly
because they couldn't get it working properly). She'd also had a quick look on
the net and found bad reviews about it.
Long story short, I explained to her the benefits of it, how it works and why.
And why I felt it was good (with other backups in place as well). And how it
had saved quite a few people I know's data (including a couple of my files I
mistakenly modified and thought I'd lost). Needless to say 20-30 minutes later
I'd reconfigured her network correctly. set up Time Capsule to two machines
(and got it all backing up), connected her wireless printer (which they
couldn't do) and done other work as well.

So yeh. Sometimes it's not always the software itself, it's what it's working
with or on. Or even it's set up.
Not every instance of machine is identical. We all have different things on
them and all run them a different way. I suppose just like not one person is
the same to the next, the same could be said with computers :o) (Well unless
it's like a SOE type network,..lol).

I sometimes think if we went by what we read we'd never upgrade anything. eg
when an OS upgrade comes out there's always a problem or two somewhere. If we
go by oh no, look at all the issues. It must be really bad. We'd never
upgrade!! LOL.
But yes, sometimes it does pay to read and wait. I know I didn't get round to
Lion until at least 10.7.1/10.7.2 was released. (More so for another
Application I had to change and needed time to do it). But major updates I'm
still a bit wary of and read first before doing it. And making sure it's all
backed up etc before I start,.lol Nothing like being prepared.

Just my 2cents worth, lol. (Sorry for the long post).

Oh and another good Virus one that isn't too bad (and free) is iAntiVirus.
http://iantivirus.com/
(Just to stay on topic,lol)

Merry Christmas and a Happy Festive Season to all.

Kind regards
Daniel

Airport card

She already has WiFi in her apartment, but I don't have a working

iPod not Recognised

2011-12-22 Thread Warwick L Smith
Seasons Greetings all ...

My nephew bought an 8Gb iPod Touch from Harvey Norman last week but we have not
been able to transfer any music to it from CDs. The Mac recognises the iPod as
it asks if we want to transfer photos from the camera, but comes up with the
following error message: iTunes could not connect to this iPod because an
unknown error occurred (0xE803). Nothing in the Help or in a Google
search seems to help as the error code apparently relates to a PC.

The iPod has no apps (unlicensed or otherwise).

Any ideas would be most welcome, as he'd like to set it up before Christmas.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

I'm certain all new Apple devices are covered by full phone support for the
first 3 months. Give them a ring, they are usually very friendly and will
understand that error code.

Re: iPod not Recognised

2011-12-22 Thread Peter Crisp
Hi Warwick, I suggest you do a sync, backup then restore. It'll take a bit of
time but worth it.

As it is a new unit, did you do the set up process in configuring with the Mac?
I suppose in my first paragraph that it is all set up on the Mac as a
recognised iPod.

In the process of restoring, it may request to do an iOS update, if it isn't
already the most current (5.0.2 I think). The iOS update took me 3 hours to
download the other day on one of my (kids') 3 iPod Touch's. It's around 750MB.

Re: iPod not Recognised

2011-12-22 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Warwick,

I am presuming he is using a Mac, I don’t know what operating system Snow
Leopard, Lion…
Does he have the latest iTunes installed?
Has he restarted both the iPad Touch and his computer iTunes?

1. Update to the latest version of iTunes.

2. Plug the device directly into a high-power USB 2.0 port on the computer. If
possible, use a USB port on the back of the computer.

Avoid plugging the device into a keyboard, display, or standalone hub. The
USB ports on these accessories may be low-power or only offer USB 1.x
connections.

3. If you are using an accessory, remove the device from the dock and connect
it to the computer using only the Apple USB to Dock Connector cable.

If you have access to additional Apple USB to Dock Connector cables, try
testing with another if the first one doesn't work.

4. Restart your computer and device. To restart your device:

Hold the power button until slide to power off appears. Slide to power off
your device.
When it is off, press the Sleep/Wake button to turn it back on.

5. Disconnect all USB devices from your computer, except for your keyboard and
mouse. Then reconnect the iOS device. If the issue is resolved, reconnect other
USB devices, testing after each connection.

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi Darrel,

I assume you have already used the tools already built into iTunes:

file/display duplicates

and

advanced/get track names

and while you are at it,

advanced/get album artwork

These all do what you asked fairly well.

Re: itunes cleanup

2011-12-22 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Darrel,

Eugene has given you good advice below. But be very careful with duplicates,
especially if you have imported in different formats eg. I import all my music
CDs into iTunes as AIFF ( exactly the format on the original music CDs). Then
when I create Playlists for syncing to my iPhone / iPods I create MP3 versions
of the tracks (to save on space).
When you ask iTunes to Show Duplicates it will show all versions of the track,
you will need to select with format you want to keep.
Also if you have different versions of the same song by the same artist. I
explain more below.

As Eugene mentioned:
File - Show Duplicates, and iTunes will create a list of all the songs it
“believes are duplicates.

The only problem with this feature is that it’s quite liberal in deciding what
is, and is not, a duplicate. As a result, the list of potential duplicates can
wind up being very large—especially if you have a number of different versions
of the same song by the same artist.

So here’s the trick…the Option key. Hold it down, then select File, and notice
that Show Duplicates has changed to Show Exact Duplicates.
The resulting list will be much shorter, as it will only select exact
duplicates.
This functionality is covered in the iTunes Help, where it states:

Press the Option key and choose File Show Exact Duplicates to find multiple
copies of the same song (if, for example, you inadvertently imported the song
twice).

However, based on feedback from those who’ve heard this hint before, it seems
like this feature isn’t well known.

If you need more help removing duplicates than this method provides—for
instance, clearing out hundreds of duplicates isn’t necessarily an easy task,
even if you’ve identified them—then you might want to check out Dupin
http://dougscripts.com/itunes/itinfo/dupin.php, which offers a number of
features to help solve your duplicate woes, including automating the deletion
of duplicates.

Christopher Breen discussed Dupin in more detail in his article on dealing with
iTunes dupes.

Re: itunes cleanup

2011-12-22 Thread Chris Burton
Hi guys

What fantastic advice on the use of iTunes, thanks very much Ronni and Eugene.

I too am tidying up my itunes selection for christmas, trying to redo many of
the 'Genres'' that have been in place for different songs.

Most I can change individually by clicking twice on the Genre and typing in a
new genre. However with a few thousand songs it is going to take a long time.

Is there a way to 'bulk change' genre so to speak?

Other songs wont allow me to change genre (or even update song or artist name),
and I dont know how to 'unlock' it so I can?

Thankyou very much for any advice

Best regards

Chris

Merry Christmas

32gb phone).

What a huge change from my old style phone, and a breath of fresh air.

A great chrissy present from me to me!!

Merry Christmas to all and thanks again for your advice.

 Hi Chris,

As Eugene pointed out Telstra now unlocks phones for free which actually puts
it ahead of Vodafone in serving that particular customer need. The storage
capacity of the iPhone equates to disk space on a computer. In my opinion 16
GB is ample for most things. With a bit of judicious selection iTune one can
have on hand sufficient songs, apps and films for a stint on a desert island.

I currently I have a 32 GB phone but if my current usage patterns continue I
will likely buy a 16 GB one when next I upgrade because the plans seem to be
disproportionately better value for the smaller capacity. Here's a quote from
a forum regarding an 8 GB iPhone (note this is about 8 GB not 16).

I keep a fair amount of music and photos on my iphone in addition to movies.
right now, i have 480 songs, 289 photos, 6 videos (2 of which are full-length
movies), 368 contacts, and 8 years worth of calendar events on my iphone, and
i still have 1.1GB of space available (on an 8GB iPhone).

Most telcos now have to offer a 2 year warranty as the phone has to be
covered for the full length of the plan. If you bought straight from Apple
 you pay extra for that.

Go with the plan plus $5 as the plan is subsidising the phone anyway.

The old rule applies for phones as well as computers - buy as much
 memory/storage as you can afford.

Telstra will unlock it if you ask - just say you're going over seas and need
to insert a foreign sim card. They won't charge you. Once you contact
telstra they will do the business at their end. Meanwhile you need to have
backed up your phone at your end and then you do a rebuild from the image
you just backed up - during this process iTunes contacts Apple store and (if
Telstra has done its job) the code for unlocking is automatically downloaded
 along with the rebuild.

You'll love the iPhone it is better than they say!!

 Good afternoon everyone

I had a call from our friendly Telstra a few days ago reminding me that my
Business Phone plan was about to expire tomorrow, and that I should sign up
for another one!! Very nice of them I thought!

After some calls to a Telstra phone business in Busselton and looking
online it seems they have some reasonable Business Cap plans that come with
 phones.

I need a 'Blue Tick' phone for rural use, and fortunately the iPhone 4S is
Blue Tick accredited. I thought now is my time to get a real phone and
finish my Apple Suite off with a 16gb 4S, and get rid of my old Telstra
Tough unit. Some of the other 'Android' phones are Blue Tick, but I am keen
 on an iPhone.

There is a catch: The 4S is NOT included in the plan, but requires payment
of an extra $5/month over 24 months on a $59 Plan!!

I have a few questions some you guys might be able to assist me with:

Is it better value for me to purchase an iPhone first rather than have it
included? The total 'payment price' on the plan = $120, which is way
cheaper than buying outright. What is the catch here?

The phone will be 'Locked', but I am assured it can be 'Unlocked' by
phoning Telstra and then using iTunes (not sure how that works).

Is a 16gb phone ok for most general use, rather than 32 or 64gb phone?

Is there anything else that others can think of that I need to consider?

Thankyou for any advice on this

 Kindest regards

 Chris
