Re: Blue screen and incomplete screen.

2012-07-11 Thread wa...@realworldcomputing.com.au
Hi Jennifer,

You might be able to find the cause of the kernel panic by looking at the logs.
They can be viewed with

/Applications/Utilities/Console

I did find this post by another user who upgraded to OS X 10.6.8 and was
getting kernel panics when the computer went into sleep mode:

 https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3142452?start=0tstart=0

The solution they found was as follows:

So, two solutions eventually presented themselves:

 1) Stick with 10.6.8, but power down/unplug any secondary monitors before
sleep. Apple engineering had me try this, and I didn't get any further panics
 2) Upgrade to Lion. I've had no issues with panics at all in Lion, regardless
 of monitor attachment.

Frankly, I'd take option 2 (unless you need Rosetta for PPC). The bonus
being, Lion is actually a pretty nice upgrade.

Carlo

 Hi John,

Technically speaking, iCloud does not sync any email from your computer or
other devices, per se. What iCloud does is provide you with a free @me.com
or @mac.com email account in much the same way that any other email provider
 does.

The point, however, is that iCloud doesn't sync your mail in the same way
as it does for contacts and calendars; your mail isn't uploaded from
Mail.app to the iCloud servers and then synced down to your devices. This
would largely be redundant as unlike your own contacts and calendar
appointments, which you create yourself, most of your email came from the
cloud in the first place, so Mail.app on your Mac and the iOS Mail
application simply fetch your mail and sync changes via IMAP in the same way
as they would with any IMAP-based email account.

In fact, the only thing that iCloud provides that is different from any other
IMAP based email provider is that ability to get push notifications on iOS
devices for new e-mail messages; it otherwise works in much the same way as
 any other IMAP account.

If your email provider supports the IMAP protocol for accessing your email,
and you've set your devices up to use IMAP for that email account, changes
you make on one device (like deleting an email, or moving it to a folder)
will show up on all of your other devices.

If you're using the POP protocol to access your email, that's not the case.
Changes made one one device will not show up on other devices.
How I get around this with the one email account I have that is a POP Account
(my Westnet mail account) I have it set to Remove copy from server after
retrieving a message: After one day...
Therefore I can access my POP email on all my devices during the day.
If I was going to be away for more than a day without all my devices (my MBP,
iPad iPhone) I could change the setting to not delete mail from the server
 for a week or whatever.
Of course you have to be careful with this setting if your ISP has a small
limit on how much email you can leave on the server.

 Ronni

Hi Rosemary,

Check the IP address and subnet of both your Macs (working) and (not working)

Also check the DHCP client list on the TimeCapsule and see if both devices are

3. Delete the file NetworkInterfaces.plist. Enter administrator name and

Hello Carlo,
Thank you for your suggestions. Unfortunately looking for the causes of
the problem in Console showed me information way beyond my level of
understanding. I think I must wait to see if the freeze happens again and
then if it does call for a technician. I have no secondary monitor and I
am reluctant to upgrade to Lion as Snow Leopard does everything I need.

Best wishes,
Jennifer

 Hi Jennifer,

I did find this post by another user who upgraded to OS X 10.6.8 and was
getting kernel panics when the computer went into sleep mode:

The solution they found was as follows:

So, two solutions eventually presented themselves:

  1) Stick with 10.6.8, but power down/unplug any secondary monitors
before sleep. Apple engineering had me try this, and I didn't get any
 further panics
  2) Upgrade to Lion. I've had no issues with panics at all in Lion,
 regardless of monitor attachment.

Frankly, I'd take option 2 (unless you need Rosetta for PPC). The bonus
being, Lion is actually a pretty nice upgrade.

 Carlo

Re: Blue screen and incomplete screen.

2012-07-11 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Jennifer,

Understanding crash logs isn't easy and it's hard to decipher the cause of the
problem (sometimes impossible).

In Snow Leopard, if a kernel panic occurs, information is added to a log file
in the folder /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports.
That is your HD/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports (not your Home Library).

Double click the panic log and a new console window will open.
New panic logs are added to the end of panic.log.

If it was a 'Crash' the log will be in CrashReporter which stored in your home
library ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter)
 (~) represents your Home Library.

Again Double click the panic log and a new console window will open.

If you can locate the log of the date time that the crash/kernel panic
occurred you can... Then choose Save a Copy As... from the File menu (or hit
shift-command-S), and save this file somewhere (like your desktop).
The file can be named anything and will have .log as its file extension.
You can then quit the Console program once you have done so.

If you wish for me to have a look at the log to see if I can pick up anything
that could have caused the crash, attach that file to an email 'offlist' to me.

Cheers,
Ronni
