Re: Mountain Lion Download

2012-07-31 Thread Tim Law
Hi Ronni,

Re Network - Telstra Cable. Generally get results of between 12 - 18Mbps on
Speedtest.net

In the App Store, I purchase Mountain Lion then clicked on Purchases pane and
watched the paint dry as the download started
Other updates, such as Pages and Numbers were coming through at 350kbps each at
the same time, just Mountain Lion was so slow.

The 'time left' would vary from two hours to 2 days, fluctuating up and down
each few minutes. This went on for a couple of days. Some of that time, about 6
hours, we were shaped back to 56kbps, but once the normal speed returned
overnight, I noticed no significant difference in the speed the numbers were
changing on the download.

Now and again, I would pause the download, then restart it after a couple of
minutes to see if I got a better connection - if that makes any difference I
don't know, but it never made any difference to the speed I was getting.

The final crunch came when I had got close to the end and then a message came
up in the AppStore that the download had failed, or stopped. It was in red. and
the line that had shown how much I had downloaded disappeared like it had never
downloaded anything.

It's not the first time I've had problems with largish downloads from the App
Store or iTunes. My son tried three or four times on his PC to get the last
updates through for his iPad and iPod Touch updates. And I had to have several
goes to download a Combo update a few months ago. It's just not reliable.
Downloads just stop and disappear, gone to cyberspace. Yes I looked for the
'Paused' in the App Store. It's not there.

Network is Telstra Cable
Cable Modem is a Motorola Surfboard SB5101U
Router is Snap Gear 300
Computer is Mac Mini Late 2009
OSX is 10.7.4

Normally downloads and network connections are adequately fast and reliable.

I'm in the middle of really needing my computer to work properly for me now,
and don't need the distraction of this, so I was going to leave it for a while.
I had assumed it was caused by server load. But if yours took 4 hours - wow,
that's shows it CAN work and is fast (ish) :-)

Hi Chris,

You need to continue to sync using the same computer that your wife's iPhone 4S
was originally setup on.
I would imagine she would have connected it to her computer to setup and sync
whatever she wanted to have on her iPhone.

Hey Carlo

Thankyou very much for your detailed post on this.

I am not sure if Cath's iphone once synced with my laptop itunes to transfer
the songs over, can also be synced later with her itunes on her laptop?

I thought Apple doesnt allow this or various devices are only linked to one

this is just a myth I have heard?

Best regards

Re: using itunes with iphone

2012-07-31 Thread wa...@realworldcomputing.com.au
Hi Chris,

The most common way to get songs onto your iPhone from iTunes is as follows
(though there are other ways)

1) Load the songs into your iTunes library by purchasing or importing.
2) Connect your iPhone to a USB port your Mac via the docking cable.
3) Sync your iPhone with your iTunes library to get to songs onto the phone.

So just to expand a bit on step 1).
* Open up iTunes
* Click on menu item File | Add to Library...
* navigate to your mp3 or m4a songs and click open.

You can also add songs to you iTunes library by purchasing them from the iTunes
store or ripping a CD that you own.

If you need more help with any of the above please post back.

Regards,
Carlo

Re: Mountain Lion Download

2012-07-31 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Tim,

When you mention "the Download fails"... what happened, did you get a error
message?
Or has the download just paused / stopped?

If when downloading OS X Mountain Lion and the download is stopped, click on
Launchpad in the Dock and you will find a Mountain Lion icon with the word
“paused” below it.

Click on the icon and the download will continue.

I found I had to do this often during the course of the Mountain Lion
downloading.

Cheers,
Ronni

I am not sure if I can do that from my laptop and iTunes or set her laptop up

I tried to access itunes on her laptop last night but received a continuous
error 'cant connect to itunes, check internet connection'.

It turned out that iTunes 4.7 doesnt connect and after a very long time
googling I found a link to iTunes 9.2 that I have now downloaded and installed,

Now Im just not sure what to do next to get the music from my laptop to hers
then to her iphone!

Any advice and help on this is warmly appreciated

Sounds worse than mine.
When I tried downloading Lion it failed after 7 hours and was not halfway !
Gave the idea away after that.

I was on what I thought was quite a legitimate website yesterday (can't recall

I saw a pop up offering iPhone 4S for $150.00.
When I clicked on it there was a count down for some at $29.95.
I got off that site quick smart.

Re: Wednesday 12 September for new iPhone?

2012-07-31 Thread Ronda Brown
WAMUGers be aware there is a scam email & text message doing the rounds.

"Get a free iPhone 5 to Test and keep". I received one of the emails yesterday.
"Be first to Test and keep Apple's new iPhone 5"...
If you receive one of these emails... Delete it! Don't click on any image or
link in the email.

If you receive a text message on your phone with a code or address link to
click... Don't
Just delete the message. Otherwise you will receive a lot of spam.

Cheers,
Ronni

Interesting "walk down memory lane" of Steve Jobs - Dashboard

2012-07-31 Thread Daniel Kerr
Thought this was quite funny to watch,...just for a bit of a "walk down memory
lane" with Dashboard.
You know,..that thing that sits there and sometimes get used a little. (I still
use mine with Australia Post widget and a few others,...)

Arrr the Steve Jobs keynotes. They were always fun to watch,..and this one has
his good comic humour in it as well

Enjoy!

Re: Wednesday 12 September for new iPhone?

2012-07-31 Thread Daniel Kerr
Yeh later year (October) is looking pretty likely for iMac.
Don't think you'll see it September as they don't want to take too much hype
from iPhone/iPad and keep the two "Separate". And vice versa.

Also, some of the rumours are saying we may see iPhone "announced" 12th
September but not actually released until 21st September when it's "available".
So still gives everyone some time to save a few more dollars for it,lol :)
Interesting "hands on video" of the "new iPhone"/"iPhone 5"/whatever it gets
called.

And also a media event "all but confirmed" for 12th September as well -

As always,...take it with a grain of salt,..lol. We'll see it when it's in our
hot little hots (or on the shelves) and limited quantities,...hehe ;)

Kind regards

Canadian Jim Dalrymple often seems to get inside information from some

There are also persistent rumours about a smaller iPad to be launched on

 Hi Severin,

When you first opened Calendar.app after upgrading to Mountain Lion, did
you allow it to complete "Upgrading Calendars"?

I require more information on how you have Calendar.app setup & how you
 have been syncing.
The message you received when you 'Signed out of iCloud' indicates you
have been and are using iCloud.

 Open Calendar.app
Calendar > Preferences > Accounts - What do you have listed here, is it
 'iCloud CalDAV'?

Under Calendars (in Side column) - what Calendars do you have selected &
 Subscriptions?

Re: Calendars

2012-07-31 Thread Severin Crisp
Many thanks Ronni. Now that iCal is happy it is probably best to go with the
flow and leave it as is. Who knows, I may go out tomorrow and buy an iPhone
and an iPad and then I will be glad of the setup!
On second thoughts, it is forecast wet with possible hail here tomorrow so I
may stay in the warm and leave the iPhone and iPad for a day or so!
Best wishes
