Home folder icon disappearing from dock

2013-02-07 Thread Barry Sexstone
G'Day all

I am sure I am missing something very obvious
I have been away for a short time and one of my Grand-children has had access
to the computer although there is no proof they have caused the problem.

The icon for my home folder (the house symbol) has disappeared from the dock.
How do I restore it? I have tried various things with no avail, I presume it
is a default icon as I have never placed it there so it probably behaves
differently to other folders.

Thanks

Barry

Re: Home folder icon disappearing from dock

2013-02-07 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Barry,

Is you Home Folder showing in the Finder Sidebar? That is just an Alias in the
Sidebar.
You need to:
1. In the Finder, click the icon for your Hard Drive.
(Unless you’ve renamed it, it’s probably called Macintosh HD.)

2. Open the Users folder.

3. Then drag your Home Folder from the Users folder onto the Dock (first spot
to the right of the divider) and release the mouse button.

If you hover your cursor over the dock you will see the divider symbol (white
vertical line with arrow top bottom)

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: Home folder icon disappearing from dock

2013-02-07 Thread Barry Sexstone
Many thanks Ronni

That worked BUT. the icon is now that of the first of my home folders. I can
live with that but it seems odd that now behaves like any other folder on the
dock. In Finder side bar the hard drive icon has disappeared although it does
appear on the desktop, all the external drives appear but not the Macintosh HD

Re: Home folder icon disappearing from dock

2013-02-07 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Barry,

If you hold your mouse arrow over your Home Folder on the dock be it a folder
or a house it will present you with a choice of how to display the folder/icon.

If you select Folder it will show the House.

If you select Stack you will have a folder icon

Re: Home folder icon disappearing from dock

2013-02-07 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Barry,

I suggest grandkids be supervised when using your iMac, or taught NOT to fiddle
and change any settings.
Or Create a User Account for them with Parental Controls.

I have had to fix many serious problems that kids have created on clients Macs.

My grandkids were taught in very early years to respect a computer, that it is
not a toy.
Sure they can do real fun things on a Mac, but they must not change any
settings or fiddle with things they don't understand.

Cheers,
Ronni

If Janis Lynn's Yahoo Account has been hacked and it does look like it has

Re: New MS Office

2013-02-07 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Chris,

There is NO Mac version of Microsoft Office 2013.
The current version for Mac is Office for Mac 2011.
http://www.microsoft.com/australia/mac/products

Microsoft Office 2013 and Office 365, are the Windows maker's big push to
bring its suite of software and services into the cloud with subscription-based
pricing.

While the company continues to offer boxed versions of the Office software,
they're clearly hoping you'll ditch this old-school way of buying and plunk
down $99.99 per year for an Office 365 Home Premium subscription instead. In
doing so, consumers will be able to install the full suite on up to five Macs
or PCs at once.

I recently noted an ad in the paper showing the new MS office 2013 (I think
it was 365) for quite a low price, but saying it was by subscription for 1
year!? Does it apply to both PC's and Macs?

Is someone able to explain this, as I see it that you only get to use it for
a year then have to pay for another, is that correct? This is a different
approach to just buying it outright or am I missing something?

The reason I ask is I only have Excel:Mac vX (Service release 1) on my older
MBPro and Excel 2002 on my old Compaq laptop with XP with some of my
important and newer excel files being .xlsx which is not read by earlier
 versions.

Is there a work-around for this situation on both machines, or would it be
best if I just buy the newer version of Excel and Word? I dont need the full
 Office software.

I have finally been successful finding work after 8 months, and these
computers will be going to work offshore soon and I would like to get them
 running properly before they do.

Many thanks for any of your help I appreciate it greatly.

Adobe Flash Player is out of date

2013-02-07 Thread Matt Falvey
Hi, I just opened Facebook and had the message:

Adobe Flash Player is out of date, and tells me:

The version of Adobe Flash Player on your system does not include the latest
security updates and has been blocked . To continue using Adobe Flash Player,
download and updated version from Adobes's website.

After the previous posts regards Flash, I am unsure if I should or not. Any
ideas?

Thanks

Matt Falvey.

Re: Adobe Flash Player is out of date

2013-02-07 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Matt,

Go to System Preferences - under 'Other' you should see 'Flash Player'
Click on the Flash Player icon, then click the 'Advanced' button
Beside 'Check Now' what Plug-in version do you have?
If it does not indicate that Plug-in version 11.5.502.149 is installed.
Click the 'Check Now' button and download and install the latest version

Or go directly to the Adobe site: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ download
and install the latest version for your operating system.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: New MS Office

2013-02-07 Thread Chris Burton
Hi Ronni

Wow, that is amazing. I guess that will only be useful if I actually use Cloud
for much of my other work and storage commitments? I have no plan soon to do
that and only need excel and word for my documents and data analysis.

I do have MS Office 2011 on this MBPRo which I use every day.

I could probably get away with using the present old version of Excel as it is
on my older MBPro but will need a new version on the Compaq with XP, as it is
the only way I can run a required Federal Government database used for
recording all whale sightings during the surveys, and it is a proverbial pain
in the.. to use. I will be needing to use the new Execl (.xlsx file format)
with some other files that I use to access the report out puts from the
database for analysis.

Thanks very much for your very informative wrap up on this Ronni.

It all makes sense now: MS are trying to make some serious cash out it!!

Best regards

Chris
