Re: Facetime strangeness

2014-01-23 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Neil,

Have you checked all settings - especially WiFi & 'Show My Caller ID' is ON on
both iPhones?

Have you tried:
Turning FaceTime OFF & back ON with successful activation combined with
A) Soft (turn iPhone OFF/ON) - Restart
and
B)Hard Restart
1. Press & Hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for
at least 10 seconds
2. Ignore the Red Slider that appears on the screen and keep holding both
buttons until the Apple Logo appears
The iPhone will restart.

The first method is a 'soft reset' only and leaves running programs in memory.
The second method completely powers down your iPhone and also clears the RAM
and cache.

Can you connect if you switch from a normal cellular 'Voice' call to a
'FaceTime' call while connected to the WiFi network?
A FaceTime button appears in the normal call controls to start a FaceTime
session with the call in progress?

Cheers,
Ronni

Facetime strangeness

2014-01-23 Thread Neil Houghton
Hi,

Hope someone with more experience of Facetime can explain this for me.

We've recently been setting up Facetime on our phones/computers/ipad -
including georgie's 93 yr old Mum ;o)

Our iPhones are model4 (not 4s) so we understand that they will only
Facetime over wifi, not 3G. The iPad is newer and works over both wifi & 4G.

In general all was pretty simple and works well. However, the two iPhones
will not facetime TO EACH OTHER over our home wifi network. Both phones will
Facetime just fine to the iMac (over wifi) and to the iPad (over wifi and
over 4G) - however if we try to Facetime between the two phones it rings and
brings up the "wanting to connect" dialogue box - but when you accept the
invite it tries to connect and then just says "connection lost". The
behaviour is the same whichever iPhone initiates the Facetime connection.

We even tried with both phones really close to the wifi router (an Airport
Extreme) - in case it was a signal strength thing - but it made no
difference. Besides, it all works fine over the same network to the iPad and
to the iMac over much greater distances.

So... am I missing something really obvious ;o)

Any thoughts - is there any reason why 2 iPhones4 (is this the plural - like
Attorneys General??!) shouldn't be able to Facetime each other over the same
local wifi network?

TIA

Re: Typing drops off into hole

2014-01-23 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi David,

What computer is this happening on... Is it a desktop or a Laptop?
And what OS X... are you running Mavericks?

One thing to check is your energy saver preferences.
System Preferences > Energy Saver - computer sleep try changing it to never of
a longer time, then test if no difference you can change it back to what you
originally had set.

You might check to see if the problem still happens when you Safe Boot Mac OS
X. If the problem isn't there when you Safe Boot, then it's probably related
to a third-party program or startup item.

When something is handling keyboard input, we say it has "focus". When you're
typing into a text field, then that field has focus. If you click somewhere
else, then focus moves to where you clicked. What you're describing sounds
like focus is moving somewhere unexpectedly. It might help to figure out where.

While it won't solve your problem, VoiceOver can help figure out where focus is
going. VoiceOver is a program that's part of Mac OS X that is designed to let
blind users use the computer, but it also may help shed some light on your
situation.
If you are running Mavericks:
1. Go to Applications > Utilities - Open ‘VoiceOver Utility.app
2. In the "Navigation" section, make sure that "Initial position of VoiceOver
cursor" is set to "Keyboard focused item".
3. Also, make sure that "VoiceOver cursor follows keyboard focus" is checked.
4. Close VoiceOver Utility and go to System Preferences > Accessibility -
VoiceOver.
and select - ‘Enable VoiceOver’
At this point, the computer will start talking, so use headphones if you don't
want to disturb anyone near by ;-)

VoiceOver will show an introductory note, and read it to you. You can just
click "Ok". Now, VoiceOver will tell you whenever the focus moves. VoiceOver
can be tricky in a web browser if you're not used to it, so ignore Safari for
this test. Instead, start a new text do anything else that will give you a
text cursor.

Wait and listen to what VoiceOver says when the cursor disappears. It should
briefly describe where the focus has moved to. For example, if focus moves to
the Finder, then it may say something like "Finder, Desktop" and the name of
the currently selected file. If you want more information, you can press
Control-Option-F4 (you probably need to hold down Fn as well, if you're on a
laptop). That will make VoiceOver describe what has keyboard focus.
(Control-Option-F3 will give you a little bit different information too.)

You may want to repeat this test a few times with different programs and
different windows to see if there's a pattern. For instance, if focus always
moves to the same program regardless of what's open, then that program may be
stealing focus. Once you've got an idea of where focus is going, you can turn
off VoiceOver in System Preferences.

While this won't fix your problem, it may provide more information to make it
easier to figure out what's going on.

Cheers,
Ronni

I have a similar problem, except I miss only a few characters,
especially after I type a 'c'! It doesn't matter which app, or
keyboard, and it's intermittent. Weird...

Typing drops off into hole

2014-01-23 Thread David Noel
I'm experiencing a strange thing which I can't work out. I'm typing text,
say into a text editor, and at some point the app stops accepting
characters (no cursor) and the typing from then on is lost. Selecting the
last insertion point brings back the cursor. It's not one particularly
application, and I haven't noticed yet what's different about the loss
point. It's as if the operating system just stops listening (alright, it's
getting bored). Any insights, please?

Re: Missing disk space

2014-01-23 Thread Severin Crisp
Thanks for your input, Peter.
I had already arrived at that solution late yesterday afternoon. I had a
nearly up to date SuperDuper clone, part of my regular backup strategy, so
updating that took little time. A reformat and then an overnight copy back and
this morning all is back to normal! A relief I must say, now I can get on
with the job!
Thanks again

Of course it's a pressure time! That's simply Murphy's Law.

First thing to try is to restart in Single User mode and run fsck. Restart your
Mac, holding down cmd-S, and type "fsck -fy" at the prompt. This may well
recover the unclaimed space and correct the error.

If this doesn't work, unfortunately I fear the only reliable fix will be to
make sure you have an up-to-date Time Machine or other backup (eg, Carbon Copy
Cloner or similar), reformat your hard drive, and restore from the backup, in
the hope that the problem file(s) have not also been backed up. Generally,
something like Time Machine is only going to backup visible files, apart from
those at the System level. It's likely that the problem is not even related to
an invisible file at all, rather that it's a problem with unused space not
being correctly marked as available. A format and restore should correct this.

your main problem is that this is all going to take time.

Good luck with it all.

Re: Off topic UPS - Uninterrupted Power Supply

2014-01-23 Thread Neil Houghton
Hi Brian,

1) Yes

2) I used to do this when computer, modem and home phone base station were
all in close proximity. Currently, computer is relocated and UPS has moved
with it - so modem etc now go down with power :o(
I'm even thinking off second UPS to regain the functionality.

3) I've been very happy with my APC RS 1000 UPS (100VA or 600W load rating)
which I bought several years ago when Harris technology had a really good
deal on. I don't know what the current equivalent would be - browse

to see what's on offer - then shop around for best price.

Note that the larger the rating then the more things you can plug in for the
same operating time (or the longer operating time for the same load) - mine
was fine for the iMac, modem, phone and external hard drive to let me save
what I was doing and even work on for a while. If you are only looking to
drive the modem, airport & phone (no desktop and external drives) it would
probably be overkill and a smaller/cheaper unit would probably suit you - it
all depends on the load you want to plug in and how long you want it to last
;o)

Hi all,
Probably a bit off topic but...
Our power drops off quite regularly and I thought if I connected my modem and
my Apple AirPort (even home phone) - They are all low drain devices - less than
a computer tower, that I could continue browsing on the iPad, iPhones and
MacBooks until the power resumed.

1) Would this work?
2) Anyone doing already?
3) Opinions and recommendations...

300GB has gone missing. I have run Clean My Mac and Disk Warrior and the
