Re: Istat Menus v 3

2014-12-21 Thread James I Fraser

Hi Ronni,

I'll follow suit - in situ -

Hi James,

I can't remember if you gave a reason why you originally deleted
iStat Menus 4.22 and then tried to install iStat Menus v3.2.7?

I tried it and didn't like the way it displayed the CPU and I/O data actions

Are you sure the iStatMenus v3.2.7 installer is not corrupted. I
didn't think this version was still available to download.
The current versions of iStat Menus are 5.03 OS X 10.8+ required -
or you can download iStat Menus 4.22

I've no real way of knowing, other than I am having problems with the install.

My comments in Situ below

On 20 Dec 2014, at 5:57 pm, James I Fraser
mailto:jifra...@southcom.com.aujifra...@southcom.com.au wrote:

Here's an attempt to list the actions I've taken to get iStat Menus
3.27 to run - I hope one of you might shed some light on where I've
gone wrong?

James

Booted prog from Application folder
got dialogue box - iStat Menus 3 (needs to upgrade some
components before it can be used)

  following boxes already ticked -
install for all users
download sensors module (required for temps fans)
move to applications folder

What did you move to applications folder?

iStat Menus apparently did the move - don't know why, other than to
replace with the 'new updated' version

(the upgrade menu covers most of the selections except Battery and
Combined, whose boxes stay in the on position)

   Upgrade - click
  asks for password - supplied
Upgrade dialogue box disappears and none of the selection boxes
will retain their On status for more than 3 seconds

Is iStat Menus showing in the top Menu bar on your Desktop?

No, though it still shows in the Applications folder.

It's not working, so Uninstall clicked from the menu bar.
the next dialogue box suggests that uninstalling will move the
app to the trash and remove all other related files ( the trash has
been emptied before the next step)

  click uninstall
  password required
iStat Menus no longer on the screen, iStat\ Menus_892.app and
Monument 2.2.2ipa in trash
but AppTrap intervenes suggesting that in moving an app to the
trash, I might want to move it's associated system files too

move files selected
com.bjango.istatmenus.plist added to trash
trash emptied
used Find Any File to search out any remnants - it found istat in -
~library/logs/iStat Menus/istatmenus_install.log
~library/Caches/iStatPro
~library/Caches/com.bjango.istatmenus
~library/Logs/iStat Menus
	~library/Widgets/iStat Pro.wdgt	(though I think this doesn't
relate to the problem)

Did you delete the above files (in red bold) and Empty the Trash?

Yes, except the last, as I think it belongs to the widget, and thus
shouldn't be a problem?

Also look in Macintosh HD /Library LaunchAgents
delete com.bjango.istatlocal.plist

Not present

Also delete in HD /Library LaunchDaemons com.bjango.istatlocaldaemon.plist

Not present

I can't remember if iStat Menus v3 was also in System Preferences

The Library is under the top level of Macintosh HD, not your user library.
Edit: You can also find the uninstaller in Macintosh HD Library
Application Support iStat local Uninstaller.app

Not present

Empty the Trash
Restart your MacBook Pro

On another external drive I have a fully functional v3. Perhaps
copying all the files to the appropriate places?

Is there a reason why you haven't upgraded your MBP? You have
Yosemite 10.10.1 on an external... Snow Leopard is a vintage OS and
no longer supported.

I'm surprised that you've not noticed the Luddite who's wedded to
AppleWorks and Eudora. I have files in both 12+ years. I do have a
.mac address, used principally for Apple, and shy away from the
uncomfortable functioning of Mail. OK - one day . . . . and I'm sure
you've published a 'how to', and a 'why you should', though I can't
find it ;-)

As much as I echo Ronni’s sentiments on this list, I do appreciate your

My experience with Windows-based backup systems has been pretty frustrating
over years, but this little tool is one I can comfortably recommend. It does a
file-by-file backup that you can examine freely (rather than backup into a
single large “blob” that requires the application to be able to restore from),
and does scheduling as well.

Data transfer MBPro to imac

2014-12-21 Thread Chris Burton
Hi Wamuggers

I have just returned home from my work off Gabon, with a jam packed
hard disk on my MBPro (Snow Leopard) and I would like to transfer data
to my new imac (Mavericks) and I just cant remember (or find anything)
on how to do it, which is really frustrating?

Both machines have thunderbolt and I have tried connecting them but
without success, and am not sure if I need to use Target mode to do
this?

I would be most grateful for any advice to assist me with this as I
just cant seem to work it out!

With many thanks

Chris

Re: Backup App for Windoze ?

2014-12-21 Thread Stephen Chape
Thanks Peter … I will take a look at that.

I agree with Ronni’s sentiments too.
But I am a Mac User just trying to assist my elderly mother.

Tell you what though !
About 12 months ago I thought I would become a member of the Yorkshire Mac
Users Group (YMUG)
in the UK simply because that is my childhood stamping ground.
Well …. I have never seen so much NON MAC related chatter.
It is more like a social club.

Stuff like:
Going bike riding on Saturday from X to X.
Who would like to join me and finish at the X pub for a few pints?
Went to Spain for a couple of weeks and had a great holiday.
Etc, Etc.

I got so fed up with it I have tried to block the emails from members.
But I am still struggling to stop them all using RULES.
Can’t wait for my membership to expire.
