[Bill Parker]

I do not and have never used any softwares to manage my 8000+ pictures ( most 
of them hires TIFFs) .  I keep two external hard drives with all of them on and 
manipulate and use them when required for jobs.  If anything looks like 
controlling what I do it gets deleted!

Call me a Luddite, but I like to have complete control of where things are.

Hi Kevin, I suspect the answer is no. You will still have the iPhotos 
application resident on your Mac (Go to Finder>Applications>iPhoto) and you 
will see it there. You can launch it and it will look at your iPhoto library as 
it was at the time of OSX update AND conversion to Photos. Imported photos 
SINCE the migration are not backwards-visible in iPhotos but your images as 
they were at the time of migration are visible in both iPhoto and Photos. All 
future Imports go to Photos library only.

Ronni may have some higher level tips but if you have Photos on your Mac, it is 
implied the OS you have is tailored for this environment so deleting Photos not 
a good idea.

I have come to use Photos without any issues. It is reliant upon
awareness of the migration process when upgrading from iPhoto to
Photos as if you get that wrong you can create a headache to rectify. 

 

Still, I had no issues with iPhoto so was not really aware of why
such a fundamental update was necessary - probably some things under
the hood were needed (maybe driven by iCloud requirements) and maybe
there are some things I can do now that I was not previously able to
do with iPhoto.

 

I think you can still use iPhoto but I haven't since migrating.

I couldn’t agree more.
I have just upgraded from Snow Leopard to El Capitan.
I had 39,000 photos in iPhoto and I knew where to find every one.
Now I am saving to Photos - I can’t find anything.
I will sign any petition to bring back SL!!!

I have come to use Photos without any issues. It is reliant upon
awareness of the migration process when upgrading from iPhoto to
Photos as if you get that wrong you can create a headache to rectify. 

 

Still, I had no issues with iPhoto so was not really aware of why
such a fundamental update was necessary - probably some things under
the hood were needed (maybe driven by iCloud requirements) and maybe
there are some things I can do now that I was not previously able to
do with iPhoto.

 

I think you can still use iPhoto but I haven't since migrating.
