Re: Lists of File Names

2005-11-29 Thread Derek Yeoh-Ellerton

Hi James and WAMUG folks.

The text-edit copy-and-paste method is a very good one. Previously, I
have used Print Window (see link below) to obtain a print-out of a
given directory.

The difference between copying-and-pasting the names, and using Print
Window, is that you get more than just the names with Print Window...
You can get the Date modified, size etc. You can also sort by name,
size, date modified too.

Before you print your window to paper, you can use the Mac OS X
'preview' button in the print dialogue, to make sure your listing is
how you want it to look. From there, you can make a PDF, or commit the
output to paper, as per normal :-)

I have photo files in a number of folders and sub folders and I
would like to get a text file of file names of certain folders so I
can check if I have duplicate files of images.
Could anyone tell me if this can be done? I tried Versiontracker
but I couldn't figure out the right serch criteria.

Re: Dell recycling program, ~$36 pickup

2005-11-23 Thread Derek Yeoh-Ellerton

Hi folks.

I think this pertains more to initiatives worldwide, such as the weee
directive in the UK, where suppliers will shortly have to offer (and
receive!) an old computer, whenever they supplier a new computer.

http://www.dti.gov.uk/sustainability/weee/

That way, people aren't tempted to dump equipment straight into
landfill (or someone's garden verge). The directive also carries
information about how much dangerous chemicals are allowed in
computers.

And if you're not buying a new computer, you can pay a nominal fee to
have your old equipment picked up.

Re: Safari quits again

2005-10-31 Thread Derek Yeoh-Ellerton

Hi Eugene and WAMUG folks.

Here is my post from August on the topic of Safari quitting at launch...

--

I've found that several machines I've updated with the security update
2005-007 (Panther), running 10.3.9, exhibit similar behaviour to what
you are describing. I found the issue was with Mail, and Safari. I
hadn't opened iTunes on the specific machines. But the problem sounds
very similar.

I recommend being very careful with the 007 security updates... There
are numerous Apple forum discussion articles about people having
similar problems. Especially with Mac OS X 10.3.9 (I've updated 10.4.2
machines, without issue).

What most people notice first is that Safari or some other key Apple
applications stop working.

Check into your log files using an application such as Console. Check
out what the most recent messages are. Also, check
~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter log.

I found on several machines that some core files were missing or upset,
as mentioned in these logs. These included the Java Virtual Machine.
Hence why the application wouldn't launch. E.g...

In the particular cases I experienced at the end of last week, I found
some careful work with Pacifist (to extract certain parts of
installers) resolved the issues, without requiring an OS install.

Keep in mind, that if you try to install, say, the Java update that is
already installed, the Mac OS won't let you do it. But if you use
Pacifist to do the work, you can force install any update. (So, be
careful!)

In total, the tools I used were:

-Disk Utility
-Pacifist, along with these Mac installers:
-Mac OS X 10.3.9 installer
-Java 1.42 update 1
-Java 1.42 update 2
-Java Startup update 10.3.9

Before you attempt any fix, first make sure this is the same problem,
by looking at your log files.

Secondly, back up any work before proceeding.

Some authors in the Apple discussions recommend reinstalling the OS was
the only solution. This *wasn't* necessary. But some careful work
with Pacifist, and some restarts in between, was. Your mileage may vary
though.

(The restarts in between updates is very important).

Hope that helps.

Cheers,
Derek

Re: airport on a windows network

2005-09-09 Thread Derek Yeoh-Ellerton

Hi Mike.

The last line of your message quite possibly holds part of the answer
here... You may want to temporarily disable WEP encryption, and/or any
password access, while you are establishing your network connection
from your iBook, for the first time. (And then re-apply it soon after).

Often, determining/entering the correct WEP key, accurately (and to the
exact format required) causes the most problems.

Also, do you see any networks listed in your Airport menu?
And are you using a new location with only the Airport networking
enabled (at the top of your Network Configurations list)?
Have you tried picking up the network ('scanning' for it) using
NetStumbler or similar, to confirm that your iBook can see the network
at all?

My experience has been that if you wrap up all 4 of these points
together, you will soon be on the path to wireless happiness.

Just make a very concerted effort to re-establish ALL of your security,
password and WEP settings once you begin to make progress with your
iBook's wireless connectivity. Usually though, the WEP and other
security measures are the things that initially hamper your
connectivity. :-)

Some reviews on the web sound reasonable. But... has anyone tried this

So, at the end of the auction, add 10% to your purchase cost for GST. On top

All up... You get slugged an extra 20% on the price said at the fall of the

Re: Entry level Digital SLR recommendations?

2005-02-08 Thread Derek Yeoh-Ellerton

Hi Mark and WAMUG folks.

Having previously used Nikon SLRs (pre-digital), I recently brought a
300D one year ago, and haven't looked back (no complaints). If you've
used a recent Canon before (which your posting suggests), you'll find
it easy to navigate the menu structure of the 300D or the recent
addition 20D. Having said that, a new user of Canon cameras would also
find it easy to pick-up the menu structure, and general use of these
cameras.

And the Canon 300D's are very Mac-friendly (like other Canons), so no
problems there either!

One thing I have noticed... When someone (a new user) is trying to set
up a manual exposure for the first time on a camera like the 300D, it
takes a little while for the process to become clear to them. But one
could compare that to doing a manual exposure on a film SLR vs using
the standard 'Program' mode, for the first time.

Some people comment in reviews that the 300D is a bit plasticy; I
believe that's why the 20D does appear a little less plasticy. Also,
keep your eye out for the black 300D (not to be confused with the 20D).
They look more and more like a Nikon every day :). I haven't seen these
black 300D's in Oz though; I last saw one in the UK late last year.
Anyway... The Canon still feels very solid when you're taking pictures,
is that's what counts to me.

Lense-wise, the stock Canon lens is very reasonable, especially to
begin with. I also picked up a powerful Canon image-stabliser zoom lens
(75-300mm), which I found great to use. But your choice of lens of
course depends on your subject matter.

I recently purchased a Sigma DC 18-125mm lens. It's a fantastic
all-round lens and great for travelling with too (much easier to carry
around than the 75-300mm), and covers a much larger focal range than
the stock standard Canon lens. (Needless to say, I don't use the basic
stock Canon lens much any more). I believe this is the link for 18-125
Sigma lens (available for Nikon or Canon):
http://www.sigma-photo.com/lenses/lenses_all_details.asp?
id=3287navigator=6

And whatever camera you get, it's worth stocking up on an extra battery
and memory cards, and with an SLR you can go through 200 photos (and a
battery), very quickly. Or looking at getting a camera grip to hold
the extra battery. But you'll need a bigger camera case then...

I tried out a variety of cameras in-store, side-by-side before deciding
on the Canon. Take your own memory cartridges if you'd like to look at
any sample pictures you've taken in store (or just outside a store if
they'll let you out!). And at the end of the day, there isn't a great
deal of difference between the two main contenders in the entry-level
Digital SLR market. But try them side by side, work out your own
pros-and-cons, and go from there.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,
Derek

Re: sharing eudora - classic and panther

2004-02-26 Thread Derek Yeoh-Ellerton
Hi Gary and WAMUG folks.

Further to what Daniel has just posted...

You can run a Eudora folder from Classic or OS X, from any location (i.e. If
you don't want to move the folder, or if you want it in a specific
location), by simply double-clicking on the relevant Eudora settings file.

(You can also have duplicate Eudora settings files, with different settings,
to utilise the same mailboxes, from different accounts).

Depending on how you have installed your Eudora apps, this will determine
which version of Eudora will open.

Also, if you drag your Eudora Settings file directly over a relevant Eudora
application, it should open in that version.

If I've missed the point of your question at all, please let me know.

Re: Losing wireless connection - Keychain Happiness, and Separate network Location configurations

2004-02-24 Thread Derek Yeoh-Ellerton
Hi Tom and WAMUG folks.

There are a couple of items to consider here, including:

-do you have a separate location configured for your home and school (and
any other) networks? If not, consider doing so.

-have you got a working Keychain set-up, for your passwords etc. I've
found that non-working Keychains refuse to remember airport networks. Happy
Keychains can make all the difference.

With the Keychains, there is various levels of trouble-shooting them. Some
times a Disk FirstAid - Permissions repair helps. Other times, deleting the
Keychain, and creating a new one, is the simplest and best method. Your
mileage may vary. So, it's best to backup your Keychain (or the details
contained within it) before attempting any modifications, just in case of
troubles.

Hope that helps.

Re: Photoshop Missing Menu Bar- Solved - I have same issue, found relaunching Photoshop works

2003-11-18 Thread Derek Yeoh-Ellerton
Hi Kelly and WAMUGers.

I have found the same on a Mac G4 running Mac OS X 10.2.8 Photoshop 6.01.

The applied solution I have run with for this particular client, is to
either run Classic start-up by it's self (either put it on your dock, or get
it to boot at Start-up), and then open Photoshop separately moments later.

I found that if you do accidentally start Photoshop and Classic together,
simply quitting Photoshop, and then re-launching Photoshop, brings back the
menu bar palettes.

Re: Entourage Problems - Try Norton's, permissions repair, rebuilding database, closing Preview Panes

2003-11-18 Thread Derek Yeoh-Ellerton
Hi Bart and WAMUG folks.

There are a few things I have found that can help. I'd try one at a time,
until you seen results... (listed in no particular order).

1. Check your Hard drive for errors using Norton's or Diskwarrior

2. Repair permissions on your Hard drive using Disk Utility

3. Turn off the preview pane in any windows you use.

4. Quit Entourage, and trash your general Entourage prefs (not your identity
prefs, just the general Entourage ones)

5. Quit Entourage, and make a duplicate of your Identities folder, and move
it aside, in case of problems in following steps

6. With Entourage still closed, try renaming your Preferences file (e.g.
Preferences old) and renaming your Schedules file (e.g. Schedules old).
These will get recreated upon next launch. But you will need to enter your
preferences again (all your old mail will still be present)

7. Try rebuilding your Entourage mailboxes. Do this by starting Entourage
with the OPTION key held down. You can do a simple rebuild, or an advanced
rebuild. Try doing the simple first.

8. Try the advanced rebuild, mentioned in point 7 above.

9. If you are using IMAP, check if this URL applies for you.
https://engineering.purdue.edu/ECN/Resources/KnowledgeBase/Docs/20030527145
328

10. Turn off your Mac, and check for excess dust inside your Mac. If extra
dusty (especially the RAM), carefully blow the dust away (e.g. With
waterless compressed air).

11. If you have a particular mail folder that makes Entourage quit when you
click on it, first ensure the preview pane is closed. Next, try and move
messages, a few at a time, to a new mail folder, to get the culprit by it's
self, so you can delete the folder (and the troubled message).

Hope that helps!
Cheers,
Derek

Hi all I'm using Entourage on my iMac 233 running 10.1.5

It seem that in the last 3 months the program keeps on quitting,

quits and some times comes up with a error code , I can't remember what
 it is.

I have been using Entourage for a while so my Mac can handle it, or
maybe it needs more RAM. At the moment I have 160meg.

 Any suggestion ?

 Besides buying a new Mac

Re: Keyboard/Mouse Lockout - LCD monitor?

2003-11-13 Thread Derek Yeoh-Ellerton
Hello all.

I was wondering if there was a LCD monitor involved in this set-up at all? I
have seen a few G4's with LCD monitors connected, that appear to freeze when
the USB keyboard is plugged directly into the LCD monitor, rather than into
the USB port on the back of the G4 tower.

Just an idea, incase this is the situation here.

Cheers,
Derek.

I have recently been experiencing what I thought to be freezes.
However I noticed that programs continued to function normally and
discovered that unplugging the keyboard and plugging it back in fixes
the problem. This fix only works temporarily and the problem occurs
 again after some time.
Problem occurs in various programs and in Finder.
I recently went through disc first aid and repaired permissions
although I'm not too sure if this is relevant.

 Running 10.2.8 on G4-400
