ECU VPN users out there?

2010-03-19 Thread Nathalie Collins

Hi all:

I am running (on my own laptop, not an Edith Cowan University one) 10.6.2 and
can VPN successfully into ECU. However, when I use the Finder "Go.." Command to
find an ECU network server (smb:\\server address) it claims it cannot find the
server. I have checked my setting with home office IT Service. They claim that
all my settings are exactly like theirs and yet I can't connect to the server.

interestingly, I have bootcamp and when, on the same machine, using the same
connection and addresses, I attempt to connect through Windows XP, no problems.

Any suggestions on something I can try to resolve this? I am using a Telstra
Broadband model to connect in each instance.

Regards,
Nathalie

iPhone 2 Qs

2009-10-16 Thread Nathalie Collins

Hi there:

interested in helping a friend who makes frequent visits to the USA.

If he buys an iPhone 2 there, does it come unlocked? Theoretically he
wants to have 2 SIM cards--one for USA and one for AUS as a more cost
effective way of communicating and data back and forth.

Is this possible? Will the iPhone 2 work with any SIM from any country?

Thanks in advance!

Re: WAMUG Offlist Emails - Please Read

2009-10-06 Thread Nathalie Collins

Adding my 2 cents to the issue as well (while totally agreeing with
Daniel):

If someone contacts a member of the WAMUG group off list for tech
support without an invitation to do so, I believe that they should be
reported to the moderator. The moderator would then send them a
warning. If the attempt is repeated they should be unsubscribed from
the list.

I firmly believe that if you can't follow the rules of the list, you
shouldn't be on it. And I would be very annoyed to lose the
contribution of any member, regardless of their expertise, due to off-
line harassment from this list. This is equivalent--or worse--than
spamming.

As well, as Philippe says, if people send queries off list, we lose
the opportunity to learn something that may be really helpful. This
applies to many of the other Mac professionals who contribute to the

Hi WAMUG

As much as I hate to "open a can of worms", I need to address this
issue to

the list.
The WAMUG list is set up as a free support group for all to ask their
questions and others to offer advice and "fixes" to problems or
their own

experience.

Unfortunately of late their have been large amounts of email
"questions"

sent directly to people rather then going through the list, Ronni in
particular.
Although this may be seen as "just a small question", it only takes
10 of
these small questions to add up. If spending 10-15 minutes on these
"small"

questions then it doesn't take long to add up to 2-3 hours alone.

Ronni (and others) gives her time and advice (and research) free to
the
list, and unfortunately it's now starting to become a problem with
the
number of people contacting her offlist rather then going through
the list

first.
This recently became a problem and as such Ronni unsubscribed from
the list
to avoid some of this problem. Luckily for us (the list), we
managed to
persuade her back to the list. However, if we don't address this
issue, then
we may see the same occur and not be able to persuade her back to
this list

next time. I know we would hate to see this happen.

As contacting offlist can be seen as a "consulting" service, then
Ronni
would be entitled to charge for this, as she does for some of her
other
clients. (As does any other organisation these days. Have you tried
to ring
a lawyer or accountant recently and just ask them a "little"
question.
They're more then happy to answer it,..they just add it to your
bill... in 6

minute increments.) :o)

I'm not trying to start a flame war or a big long thread here, and
not out
to offend or upset anyone. I just need to put this to the list so
people are

aware. (If it's not said, then no one is aware).

I hope all can understand and appreciate this, and would ask that
this

"protocol" be followed.

Also, some may find the Guidelines and Etiquette for the list
useful for

reference as well.

Thanks in advance for everyone's understanding.

Kind Regards
Daniel Kerr

About McHeads

MacHEADS is an in-depth examination of what makes the Mac, the
iPhone, and all Apple products in general a cultural phenomena
rather than just consumer electronics, and explores the
extraordinary loyalty to Apple products by their followers, as well
as their obsession with those products. The film features footage
captured from Steve Jobs' historic Keynote address when he announced
the iPhone in 2007, the first iPhone release as it took place in New
York City, as well as archived footage from some of the earliest
Macworld events.

MacHEADS debuted at Macworld Expo 2009 with over 1000 people
attending the premiere. In an interview for BBC NEWS marking the Mac
25th year anniversary director Kobi Shely added, "The movie explores
everything from the early days to the current days. Central to the
success of the Mac has been the community that has supported Apple
through the good times and the bad. That included the years when the
company was written off as having lost its way and the ink on one of
its many obituaries was all but dry."

The film also features footage and commentary from multiple Mac
evangelists, including

And not knowing when the elephant in the room (Apple) is likely to

life difficult. You either have to specialise like Artref and Team
Digital, be a big chain like nextbyte, or be beyond the major retail
arc like Macworx. Being in the city with extraordinary rents and
low margin products is an incredibly hard way to make a dollar.

Message from MacWorld

2009-01-05 Thread Nathalie Collins

Hello All:

Simon and I attended a function for Mac User Groups this evening. Some
great finds and deals for Mac User Groups:

iStudio (www.istudiopublisher.com)
This is a very nifty program which is more sophisticated than Word or
Pages for Desktop Publishing but is a notch below InDesign and Quark.
Easy to use and user friendly with downloadable templates. You can
download a beta from the site, and upgrade to the full version for $50
for Mac User Group members. The director, Tom O'Connor, was indicating
that they are developing a user community around templates and deisgns
so that should be pretty exciting.

PeachPit Publishing (www.peachpit.com/user_groups)
PeachPit would like to have someone in the WAMUG leadership contact
them regarding their MUG program if we are not hooked into them
already. They send free copies of books to MUGs to use as prizes or
for a lending library.

Simon and I also visited Apple headquarters at 1 Infinite Loop, and I
had an interview with Guy Kawasaki this morning! All together a very
"Apple" day. I am keeping my eyes peeled for other Mac user Group
deals I can bring back to WA.

iCal Woes: Solved

2008-12-17 Thread Nathalie Collins

He everyone:

I forgot to mention in my previous post that I was totally OK with the
information in iCal being wiped. As this is the case, I was very
liberal about trashing oodles of files to get to the bugger which was
causing the freeze.

The culprit was ~/library/Calendars

I just trashed everything in there; the crashing stopped.

I know it is obvious (in retrospect) but it took me a while to get
there and I trashed every pref, cache and my entire Microsoft identity
(some conflicts were coming from old Entourage files which I had
imported to iCal previously but years ago had migrated the info
elsewhere). Not only did getting rid of those bloated Dark Side files
give me some space on my drive, I actually *feel* better :-). And the
computer still works! Bonus!

Once again, this group saved me with prompt response. Thank you to
everyone who took the time to answer, you did help solve my issue. I

iCal Woes

2008-12-16 Thread Nathalie Collins

Hi there:

Suggestions welcome...

iMac G5
1.6 GHz PowerPC G5
Running 10.5.6

iCal freezes right after it opens.

I tried down loading a "combo update" from the Apple web site which
the 'net cites as a fix, but it won't install on this machine as it is
too old. I need iCal to work because they just bought an iPhone and
want it to sync.

iCal opens and freezes.

Any help appreciated.

Hi everyone:

I am going to be in San Fran during MW 2009. I was going to sign up

Anyone out there have a code they are not using which I can use?

Thanks

Service/Retailer Database list

2003-09-30 Thread Nathalie Collins
I would welcome a list and have some suggestions:

1. I don't mind a star rating system...as long as the system is defined in a
guide and then the "overall" rating can be an average of the stars received.
Oh, maybe we shouldn't use stars--maybe we should use little apples ;-).

2. I would make it a condition of feedback that you add in some information
about the purchase, like your name, date, name of person you dealt with,
what product/service you purchased and the reason for the rating. This way
one can narrow down which products/service the places respond to best, and
also if you require all these fields, people will be less likely to "make
up" stories to favour/disfavour a retailer.

3. I would give the store "right of reply" to any feedback, positive or
negative.

PS I like Dan Kerr & Mike at Apple Centre Joondalup. Hi Mike! Hi Daniel!

Re: [FOR SALE] iTrip - cool item for your iPod

2003-09-28 Thread Nathalie Collins
Hi:

If you buy it from the manufacturer and pay for shipping to Australia then
the US price goes up to US$79 as they charge $40 for shipping overseas
(roughly AU$140) --or buy it locally for AU$140.

I paid AU$140.

Therefore the price is reasonable...and the ONO leaves room to move.

I do feel that, as part of a collegial group of Mac Users, it would have
been more appropriate to email me privately and ask how I came up with the
price if you were interested in purchasing the item.

I appreciate Daniel's response from a vendor's point of view.

If anyone out there is interested, please contact me. If I can't sell it on
the list it will go on eBay by the end of the week.

[FOR SALE] iTrip - cool item for your iPod

2003-09-28 Thread Nathalie Collins

Hi Everyone.

I recently upgraded my iPod from the first generation to the second
generation one. I have this fabulous thing called an iTrip--but I am now
selling it as it isn't forward compatible with my new iPod.

The iTrip allows you to tune in your iPod wirelessly to any unused radio
station. It powers itself through the headphone connection and has no
discernable drain on the power for your iPod. It is lightweight with no
cables. Truly a great item. I am running out to get one for my new iPod.

If you have a first generation iPod, this is a must-purchase. See more
details at http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/itrip/

It is as new and only months old. In it's original box with manual and
software.

We are selling it for $90 ono.

Any takers?

Nat

Re: Photo in Header

2003-09-08 Thread Nathalie Collins
If I can add to Onno's comments:

HTML emails also pose some other "unexpected" problems, for instance:

1. At my work place (and many others) we have to "authenticate" (enter in a
username and password) each time we access the internet...so when someone
sends us an html email we have to enter in our username and password EACH
TIME. Awful.

Even if you send an attachment, beware:

1. Someone I work with uses a "header" on his email (the logo of the journal
he is editor of). When I receive his emails, the logo is repeated over and
over and over all over the area where the text is, because my message reader
(Outlook) can't read his properly. Therefore I can't read his email as his
text is obscured by the (unnecessary) logo pattern.

2. My husband is an engineer at a mining operation which employs over 1,000
people. At his site, they are not allowed to receive emails with attachments
from those outside the company. If you send him an email with an attachment,
it sits in "quarantine" somewhere in the IT department until they determine
it is "safe". So any attachment (including VCF files) means that he can't
read the email for a few days.

The best rule--and this is from someone who works in marketing and spends
most of her day making things look "corporate"--is forget html. Forget
attachments if you can. Concentrate on the words in the message--that is
what people are going to read anyway.

Regards,
Nathalie

Question about Spam

2003-06-18 Thread Nathalie Collins
Hi:

I was listening to Radio National this morning, and they were saying how
easy it is to forge a return email address.

I was wondering--could I forge a "bounce back" message to spammers from my
ISP saying that my address is no longer valid? Would that get me off their
lists? Has anyone out there ever tried this?

Just an idea I thought I would throw out there...

Is WAMUG interested in co-ordinating this ?

I was sent the offer as I am the list moderator of a MUG down here in the

if others would like to order and if so maybe get a Perth based WAMUG rep to
coordinate one large order.

Alternatively, you can contact the people on the flyer direct to see if they
will take individual orders.

Thanks to those who indicated I could get around a game requirement of
having a CD in my drive by making a disk image of it.

Unfortunately, this method doesn't work in this instance.

I made the disk image, it is sitting on my desktop as a drive, and the game
still asks me to put the CD in.

Any ideas?

By the way, the following has happened to me with a Yahoo bounce-back. If my
email box is full, and therefore a returned "unsuccessful" message is sent
to Yahoo, you end up on the "hard bounce" list and don't receive any more
emails until it is cleared up.

CD fake out

2003-01-12 Thread Nathalie Collins
Hi:

I like to play a game on my laptop which requires the CD to be in the drive
while I play.

What I would like to do is save the contents of the CD to my hard drive so I
don't have to take the CD with me everywhere I go. Another reason for this
is I was told that if your CD ROM and hard drive are working it pulls more
power from your laptop battery than if just the hard drive is working. I am
going on a long trip overseas and I want to play this game as much as
possible on the plane, so I want to make my laptop battery last long while I
play.

OK--having said that, I have tried saving the contents of the CD to my
desktop, giving it the exact name and even the same icon as the CD--but the
game knows whether there is a CD in the drive or not because it still asks
for it.

Is there a workaround to this?

I am running 10.2 on a T-powerbook.

Thanks
Nathalie

[beware] iPod and 10.2.3: a solvable issue

2002-12-21 Thread Nathalie Collins
Hi All:

Just thought I would share a recent experience which would be beneficial to
others.

After updating to 10.2.3, I found that iTunes 3.0.1 would no longer
recognise my iPod--and I therefore could no longer sync music. The iPod was
showing up on my desktop, so I knew it wasn't a firewire problem. I tried
many things to no avail. I then rang apple support and they helped me
through it.

The issue: 10.2.3 comes with new iPod software which must be installed on
your iPod for it to sync. If you have the same problem as me, the issue is
that iTunes needs to prompt you to install the new software onto your iPod.

The cure: (as it worked for me)
- Make sure you have all software updates
- Disconnect your iPod
- Reset your iPod by pressing the "play" and "menu" buttons simultaneously
until you see the apple logo in the screen
- Restart your computer
- Open iTunes
- Connect your iPod

You should now be prompted to install the new iPod software, do so and it
should work fine.

Regards,
Nathalie

I've reset the router and replaced the router (Linksys sent me another one
with a different serial number). I encountered the same problem.

I have a DSL-300 Dlink modem. The Airport then interfaces directly with the
modem using the PPPoE protocol in the hub.

IiNet are always difficult to deal with when it comes to things going wrong.
However I was using the router without a problem for two months. Also I can
still connect to the ADSL account using a PC (+Dlink DSL-300 Modem) and with
the Airport (+Dlink modem). As far as they are concerned nothing is wrong.
They won't support this brand of router. I will probably end up upgrading
to the DSL-500 or 504 router which iiNet will support.

Yes I will upgrade the firmware to 1.43.0 . I have already upgraded the
firmware once (to a version that is not affected by the security
vulnerability - 1.42.7). The router continued not to connect to the
account.

(OT) JavaScript help

I am creating a web site wherein I want all pages to be blocked to all users
unless someone attempts to enter via a particular page (which has a login

My problem is this: how to block access to these pages if someone attempts
to access them any other way besides the login script?

Any help, to my email or the list will be appreciated.

Spam Newsletter

2002-07-04 Thread Nathalie Collins
>From someone who works in the marketing (and e-marketing) industry:

The respectful marketer will only use mailing list where people have "opted
in", and they will not on sell the list without the targets' knowledge that
the list will be on-sold.

Most marketers will send one unsolicited email and will ask the individual
to respond whether s/he wants in or wants to be unsubscribed.

Spammers send everything to anyone, hijack e-address books and use unethical
and in some cases illegal tactics to get messages out.

I am the first kind of marketer.

I used to be the second kind.

I abhor the third kind.

However, I wonder...if spam didn't work, even a little bit, would anyone
bother doing it?

[Software] Tired of M$? Try OpenOffice

2002-06-23 Thread Nathalie Collins
Tired of the Microsoft Office Monopoly?

Read this!
(From the NY Times by David Pogue)

MICROSOFT once ran a great ad for Office, its business-software cash cow. It
went something like this: "Over 94 percent of the business world uses
Microsoft Office. What are we doing wrong?"

It was true: the programs of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint,
Access, Outlook) seemed as permanent in our lives as the sun, the moon and
Windows error messages. Its rivals ‹ I.B.M.'s Lotus suite and Corel's
WordPerfect suite, for example ‹ were pretty much the same thing for pretty
much the same price, and never posed much of a threat. The world waited for
a contender that was so compelling, people might actually consider filing
for Microsoft divorce.

Now there is one. It's called OpenOffice, and it has a killer feature: it's
free.

Like Microsoft Office, OpenOffice ‹ whose official name is OpenOffice.org
1.0 ‹ comes with a word processor, a spreadsheet program and a slide-show
program. It lacks an e-mail program and database, but does have a powerful
graphics program and a Web-page editor. Amazingly, all this fits in
a 50-megabyte download from www
.openoffice.org. You have your choice of 27 languages and three operating
systems: Windows, Linux or Solaris. (A Mac OS X version is in the works.)

How could such a sweet suite be free? OpenOffice is what's called an
open-source project: a carefully orchestrated group effort by programmers
all over the world, donating their time and talent to making a dent in the
Microsoft monopoly.

That's not to imply that the software isn't polished, stable and fast; it
is. Still, if the notion of global-community-as-software-company makes you
uneasy (who gets the call for tech support?), you can also buy a boxed copy
of the software from Sun, which started and coordinates the OpenOffice
project. For $76 ‹ compared with $580 for the full Microsoft Office ‹ Sun's
version, called StarOffice, offers a few goodies the free version lacks,
including extra fonts and clip art, a printed user manual, a database
program and, above all, a phone number for (fee-based) technical help.
Corporations can buy StarOffice in large quantities for as little as $25 per
copy.

The timing couldn't be more interesting. Already, there have been rumblings
of discontent in the Microsoft Office congregation, thanks to new twists in
Office XP that some find disturbing. For example, Office is now
copy-protected, meaning that you can't use it until you've "activated" it
(transmitted or phoned in your serial number to Microsoft) ‹ a feature that
prevents its being installed on more than two computers.

That business about corporate discounts may be even more important. When
you're the person in charge of installing a new Office version on 500 or
5,000 PC's, the expense and disruption can be a major migraine. It's as if
you're recommending heart transplants for everyone in your family at once.

Until now, when companies wanted to upgrade, Microsoft offered discounted
upgrade kits. That will end on July 31. After that, Microsoft will offer
Software Assurance, a program in which companies pay Microsoft an annual fee
for the right to upgrade if Microsoft releases a new version of Office. That
may be a money-saver for companies that religiously upgrade, but it's a
pricey proposition for companies that skip Office generations ‹ especially
because Microsoft may not, in fact, unveil any new versions at all during
the three-year contract. (Companies may choose not to take part in this
program, but then when a new Office version comes along, they'll have to buy
all new copies instead of upgrade kits.)

Not surprisingly, a number of organizations aren't thrilled by the new plan.
In short, the arrival of OpenOffice and StarOffice is perfectly timed.

So how is the software itself? Critics have accused Microsoft of pilfering
ideas from its competitors, but wait till they get a load of OpenOffice.
This suite couldn't resemble Microsoft Office more if you ran it through a
photocopier. The menu commands, terminology and even keyboard shortcuts are
nearly identical. It's all here: tables, columns, edit tracking, multiple
simultaneous text selections, AutoCorrect, AutoFormat, squiggly lines
beneath misspellings and so on.

This shameless mimicry is a calculated move, of course, designed to make it
easy for people to switch from Microsoft to Open. You'll uncover what few
differences exist in one afternoon of fumbling.

The big question is compatibility: If OpenOffice can't read and save
standard Microsoft Office documents, it's dead in the water. No matter how
little you paid, it's not much use if you can't exchange files with the
other 94 percent.

In general, OpenOffice scores very well here. On simple documents ‹ a book
chapter, a home-finance spreadsheet, your basic bullet-points slide show ‹
the translation is flawless. On complex documents, OpenOffice mangles minor
formatting: a dashed line between two cells of a t

ipod help

2002-06-19 Thread Nathalie Collins

The reason I want to do this is that I synched my ipod and then accidentally

[Wanted 2 buy] Asante AppleTalk or other AppleTalk 2 Ethernet Device

working, and so I cannot print.

Does anyone out there have one to sell or one that I could borrow for a week

Getting buggy with 10.1.4

2002-05-06 Thread Nathalie Collins
Hi:

Has anyone else out there had some buggy situations since installing 10.1.4?

Some examples on my behalf:
1. Some installers won't work, when they worked in other versions of 10.1
(Stuffit for OSX for instance)
2. Microsoft office won't open at all except for entourage (It gets to a
point in the opening procedure and just quits--also never happened in
10.1.anything)

A I imagining things or is this update really not that great? I can't chalk
it up to anything else as my system is the same otherwise.

Adobe indesign (Apple-subject 076410 case 155728) (Adobe case 104716)

2002-05-03 Thread Nathalie Collins
Hi Everyone:

Thanks to Larry, David and others for the tip about the installer fix on
versiontracker and the Adobe Web Site for Indesign 2.0 Installations.

Although these fixes may have worked for others, they have not worked for
me. I am repackaging the product and returning it to the reseller for a
refund. The product is defective.

I have just spent 20 minutes on the phone with Adobe tech support
blasting them for:
1. Shipping a defective product
2. Shipping a defective product where the posted fix was not in the readme
or otherwise indicated in the packaging
3. Shipping a defective product where the fault and/or fix was not indicated
to suppliers and resellers to pass on to customers
4. Having tech support staff who ARE NOT AWARE THAT THE FIX RESIDES ON THEIR
OWN WEBSITE.

Although the fix has not worked for me it has worked for others, so it is
unbelievably inexcusable that Adobe Techs not know about AND to add insult
to industry ask me to ring them back when I have figured out what the
problem is!!

I was (like others on this list) an Adobe true believer, but now I am
bitterly disappointed, and I am going to stick with PageMaker 7.0. It may
not be as good as In Design but at least the bloody thing installs!!

Nathalie

Re: Rescued by Entourage

2002-03-17 Thread Nathalie Collins
I have been using Entourage for over a year, first with 9.xx now with
10.1.3. I love it (rare for me to say about the Dark Side).

Because--
1. It always works
2. If you want to compact your messages and make the data smaller, you can
compress it by simply pressing "option" while it starts up
3. The address book and calendar have a great format with lots of great
options.
4. It synchs seamlessly with my palm pilot (or it did before I ran my palm
over with my car :-))

Overall a superior product.

Regards,
Nathalie

Hello All:

I am looking for a text editor for C and/or Java programming with colour

I have looked at Bbedit for OSX and wasn't happy with it. I have checked
Tucows as well with no success. Can anyone recommend a program?

FW: Palm Pilots

It works particularly well with Microsoft Entourage as well.

And I second Onno's opinions regarding the other issues...

Dunno.

Depends.

I have had a Palm Pro since 1996 which had 1Mb of RAM. Late last year I
replaced it with an M100 with 2Mb of RAM. The only reason I replaced it
(it's still sitting on my desk - ah nostalgia), is because the screen was
acting up and I had already swapped it a couple of times with Palm. I'm
guessing I could have done so again, but I didn't. I've never run out of
RAM and currently have 455 addresses, 1720 appointments and 220 memos which
leaves me with 58% memory free.

In my opinion, if you treat it as a computer and not as an organiser, then
not even 16Mb is enough.

Sorry, I had to pipe up on this one.

The newest message (I believe) should go first because:

*It is the most relevant part of the message (otherwise why are you sending

* It prevents the reader having to scroll down and search for a response.

Dear DiskWarrior owner,

Recently Shawn King of "Your Mac Life"
conducted an online interview regarding DiskWarrior with Al Whipple,
CEO of Alsoft . This interview is a rare
opportunity to hear Al Whipple answer questions about disk damage in
simple terms. If this interests you, please read on.

Al Whipple answered questions such as:
* what does DiskWarrior do?
* what is a directory?
* how does a directory become corrupt?
* how do crashes contribute to directory corruption?
* how often should one run DiskWarrior?
* what are the symptoms of directory corruption?
* should one run DiskWarrior even if no problems have been noticed?
* why do Macs sometimes run noticeably faster after repairing with
DiskWarrior?
* can ancient Macs be repaired with DiskWarrior?
* can modern disks be repaired with DiskWarrior, eg FireWire and USB disks?
* what news is there about a version of DiskWarrior for Mac OS X?
* is a Mac OS X version of DiskWarrior needed or is DiskWarrior 2.1
adequate?
* can DiskWarrior be used with multiple Macs?
* when will the Ask Al forum be back online to answer customer
questions about disks and fonts? (Al stopped answering questions in
June 2001 when a flood in Texas swamped the offices of Alsoft.)

The audio interview was recorded in QuickTime format and can be found

OSX & Norton's Take 2

2002-01-17 Thread Nathalie Collins
Hi All:

I fixed the problem with a workaround which was obvious before and I am
embarrassed to say I didn't try it before I send out my first message.

First I booted into OS9 which doesn't recognise permissions.

Then I backed up the files onto an external drive.

Then I booted into OSX

I created a new user, then logged in as that user.

Then I copied the files over from the external hard disk.

Easy!

Thanks to all who responded to my query.

Regards,
Nathalie

FW: What the...

2002-01-08 Thread Nathalie Collins

Hi All!

I just want to add to this discussion as someone who lived in the US for 17
years...

Darren makes an excellent point. The advertised prices in the USA EXCLUDE
state GST which (in the state of Florida) is 6.5% but in other states can
get as high as 13%.

In the US, when a product is on the shelf, the price marked doesn't include
GST; it gets added on at the point of sale.

Online purchases have mostly been tax free (if the item is shipped to a
different state than the vendor) but that is slowly changing as more and
more US states are requiring tax be paid to them for items shipped into
their state.

Some states have 0% GST, so you won't necessarily pay more, but you will
most likely unless you choose to travel to a GST free state.

As for the cost disparity between the US and Australia, that exists with
every kind of computer equipment, regardless of manufacturer, as well as
books, CDs, food, cars, petrol, and a variety of other items.

(Example: Mass Market Paperbacks in the USA $5.99; in Australia $17.99. If
you take into account currency exchange, the cost should be about $14...not
$18.)

That being said we pay about 10% of what folks in the USA pay for education,
health, medicines, and training.

I did the math once; what I was overpaying for my luxuries I was saving on
my essentials. :-).

Regards,
Nathalie

GMUG - IDE Hard Drive Upgrade

2001-12-09 Thread Nathalie Collins
Hi

I am trying to upgrade Nathalie's B&W G3 with a second slave drive (Western
Digital 30GB, 5400rpm). She currently has a 6GB master drive (Maxtor).

Despite all efforts I cannot get the machine to recognise either drive when
both are hooked into the IDE cable. However when the 30GB hard drive is
taken off the IDE cable the machine starts without a problem.

The 30GB drive has come out of my PC. I have been to the Western Digital
web site and it says that these drives should work with Macs (as a slave
drive) and as a master drive (when installed by Apple at the factory).

The drive currently has a Windows and a Linux partition on it (but I don't
see why this should matter). I just want to be able to recognise the drive
and then format it.

I set the drive up as slave and then switched to cable-select. The same
thing happens.

Is 30GB too much for the B&W G3's. That is about the only thing I can think
of?

Regards

Simon

DVD Regions

2001-11-02 Thread Nathalie Collins
Hello All:

I have checked the WAMUG archives for an answer to this question, and found
someone asking the question, but didn't find an answer.

I want to start renting DVDs from Video Ezy to watch on my computer.
However, Video Ezy DVDs are a mixed bag region-wise...most are from the UK,
so I find myself constantly having to change regions on my DVD players on
both my computers.

As you all out there know, you only get 5 chances to change regions before
your DVD player is rendered basically useless, because it gets stuck on the
last setting you make.

I need a work around. Any ideas out there?

I rang Apple regarding this, letting hem know I am TRYING to do the right
thing and rent/buy from Australia, but the video stores have mixed countries
of origin in their DVD libraries which means (basically) I can hardly use my
DVDs at all. The guy from Apple told me a few interesting things (neither of
which would solve my problem, but I thought they were interesting and that I
would share them anyway):

1. The ACCC have ruled that this region coding practice is unfair and is
currently taking film companies to court over it. He suggested I write a
letter to them detailing my experience to add to their case.

2. DVDs which hook up to TVs don't have this problem because the region
chips are removed by distributors. However he claims that this is
impossible to do in a Mac computer.

3. He claims there is no "reset" button on the chip at all...in other words,
I can't ever reset it to give me 5 chances again.

Any comments on this?

Regards,
Nathalie

ipod drawback

2001-10-25 Thread Nathalie Collins
Lifted from the NY Times article:

Mr. Jobs said the company had taken some steps to protect against piracy in
its device. For instance, he said, songs loaded onto the iPod from a
Macintosh computer, cannot then be loaded from the device to a different
Macintosh computer, a step he said would make it difficult for people to
distribute music they own to other users.

I hate stuff like this. I have two Macs...so is this device going to protect

File synch

2001-10-23 Thread Nathalie Collins
Hello all:

Can anyone recommend a freeware or shareware utility which will synch files
the way my palm does as opposed to the way the file synch control panel
does?

It seems the file synch control panel will not overwrite older files with
new ones; it just places files which don't exist in both areas.

I would like a file synch program which will overwrite old files with the
new version at the click of a button.

Any idea would be helpful.

OS X/ OS 9 File Sharing

2001-10-21 Thread Nathalie Collins
Hi.

I have a question about using file sharing between machines running OS9.2.1
and OS10.1 machines. After the successful GMUG showcase in Geraldton
yesterday it got me motivated to upgrade to 10.1 on Nathalie's Titanium
Powerbook. OS10.1 looks really nice and the classic environment (OS9.2.1)
seems to operate well in 10.1. Nat is really keen to start using 10.1 on
the Powerbook all of the time. The only problem is that she uses
file-sharing (with her blue and white G3 running 9.2.1) a lot and file
sharing is not supported in the classic environment.

I can't seem to get the B&W G3 (9.2.1) to see the powerbook running in
native 10.1 (and visa-versa). Does anyone have any suggestions or
experiences using file sharing in these situations?

USA battery charger for T-Powerbook

2001-10-14 Thread Nathalie Collins
Hello out there in Mac Land:

I am travelling to the USA for a month, leaving in the next couple of weeks.
I am taking my T-Powerbook with me.

In order to recharge my laptop on the plane and in the US, I will need a
US-compatible plug mechanism/battery charger/power cord thing. Does anyone:

1. Have one they can rent to me for a month;
2. Have an idea about where I can get one in Australia;
3. Know FOR SURE a way to get around this? (I have heard that I can simply
take a plastic $5 plug modifier and stick it on the end of my batter charger
and that will work, but no one who has told me this has actually seen it
happen and can guarantee me that my computer won't blow up).

Any help would be appreciated! If you have a USA batter charger/power cord
which I can rent from you please contact me off list at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

CD RW incompatible part II

2001-10-06 Thread Nathalie Collins
Hi:

I was having a problem burning CDs on my firewire CD RW (external) which
came with my Titanium Powerbook.

OK, I went to software update as suggested and downloaded a few files, and
my Titanium Powerbook is now burning CDs.

However, on my B&W G3 which is running 9.2 (and connecting to the CDRW via a
PCI card), the latest version of Disc Burner and is fully updated, when I
try to burn using the same CD RW, it give me an error :"Cannot find
PerformanceBurnEngine". I tried to find this with Sherlock, on both my B$W
and my Powerbook, but with no success, so I look to WAMUG once more...

Please let me know if you have any ideas...
