Many thanks for your response and very good explanation of what happens - it
is a shame the techs at the office couldn't explain it as clearly! I think
the only way I can set up an out of office notification on the system is to
go into the server with the old pc I used to use. Back to dark ages indeed!

Security update for earlier versions of OSX?

2004-05-24 Thread Neil Blake & Associates
Hi all

Following all the discussion on the list I was keen to run the security
upgrade, but find it is only available for 10.2.8 or 10.3.3. Does this mean

that Apple has not got its act together yet with an update for pre 10.2.8?

I am running 10.2.3. - should I still be nervous??

Having a bit of a problem accessing the internet via my Airport base station
today. The problem doesn't affect my retrieval or sending of e-mail via
Airport at all, and if I connect direct via the Pismo's internal modem I can
get onto the net with no trouble.

If I am connecting wirelessly, the spinning beachball of death appears in IE
about 30 seconds after directing the browser to a website, and I have to
force quit. The problem occurs with all Macs on the wireless network -

Any suggestions?

Thanks Richard for all your helpful suggestions. I'll give PRAM zapping a
try, as the disk is clean (it has been used only a few times) and as far as
I'm aware I have no open firmware password enabled.

Curiously I have since discovered that the CD drawer opens when I restart

to DiskWarrior (I've also booted successfully from the disk on our eMac). I
don't know if that rings any bells with anyone?

Shay

Thanks for your sound advice - and your explanation of the 'missing'
connection log. I can't find any log through the Airport admin utility.

With a bit of luck, I won't need to find evidence of my lost calls as my
preparation for a rant to Telstra has been pre-empted by a call from a very
pleasant Telstra techo this evening with some suggestions to hopefully
eliminate the drop outs.

His main advice was to change the modem settings from v90 modem to v34 modem
as he discovered we were more than 5km from the exchange, and the v34
settings are much more stable and better suited to the type of line we are
on. Changing the modem settings will apparently make no difference to our
line speed, as the maximum we can achieve through the ageing copper is 33
Kbps (you might have guessed we are in the bush!). We'll see what happens!

Still - it is nice to know that not all the Telstra techos a) only work 9 to
5, and b) haven't all been shifted over to getting Bigpond up and running
again ;-)

Dial-up connection log

2003-10-13 Thread Neil Blake & Associates
Hi ŒMuggers

Have been having some trouble over the past few weeks with connection drop
outs and the occasional inability to connect to my ISP. Telstra assures me
there are no issues with the line, but the problem seems to have only
started after Telstra completed some line work near our place recently.

To gear myself up for an argument, I want to be able to quantify the
magnitude of the problem in terms of a record of lost connections or
inability to connect to my ISP but I can¹t seem to find a connection log
with any call info (there is a connection log in Internet Connect, but it
only brings up a blank dialogue box).

I¹m using a G3 Powerbook, OS10.2 connecting to my ISP wirelessly via the
modem in a Œsnow¹ Airport base station.

Can anyone help? Before OSX I used Apple Remote Access to dial in with and
was able to see a record of each dialup, so I¹m sure there must be a log of
calls somewhere.

S-video cable question

2003-09-08 Thread Neil Blake & Associates
Hi all

A cable question. Recent questions about using the s-video out port on G3
powerbooks has made me think about trying to hook mine up to the telly for a
bit of DVD viewing. Having bought the 'book second hand, I don't have the
cable that apparently they are born with, so I need to get one. What I'm a
little unclear about is whether the s-video out port only carries the
picture information, or if audio pins are also there? If s-video is picture
only, presumably I need to use the stereo audio out port to convey the
audio.

Can someone help with advice on the type of cable I need please? Is it
possible to get one cable with vision and audio together? My TV has both
component and composite video input.

Slightly OT - NiCads and NiMHs

I'm using Gimp-print 4.2.1 with my PowerBook on OS 10.2.3 and find it great
with my Canon BJC 3000. It took a little bit of setting up, but the
Gimp-print discussion list was very helpful. It has been a godsend because
slack Canon are not looking after 'old' (ie 2 year old) printers by
providing OSX drivers.

Have a look at these sites for more info:

http://www.allosx.com/1030154694/index_html

https://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-print/

If you want to print from applications that generate their own Postscript,
such as Adobe applications and AppleWorks, with a gimp-print printer driver
you will need to install ESP GhostScript:

If you are having trouble with Print Centre, try the built in CUPS (Common
Unix Printing System) print management window - it is a local web interface
(ie it is on your Mac) which you reach by going to http://127.0.0.1:631 in
your browser. Once there you have control over a whole range of printer
functions - much more than you can get in Print Centre. I've used it
successfully to set up Gimp-Print in the absence of Canon OSX drivers. It
'should' be able to cancel stopped jobs in a queue.

being told by Airport that I was connected via ethernet - quite an
achievement without cables. Following some great support from Daniel I
updated from OS 9.1 to 9.2, used the Airport setup assistant, and bingo! we

Airport help please!

2003-03-17 Thread Neil Blake & Associates
Evening WAMUGgers

I need some help from the Airport Gurus. I¹m trying to get an Airport
network going between my PowerBook (G3 400 Mhz, 384 MB RAM, running
OS10.2.3), a slot-loading iMac (G3 450 MHz, 512 MB RAM, running OS9.1) and a
Snow Airport base station (dual ethernet, on-board modem). I have installed
Airport cards in both the PowerBook and the iMac, and am using a dialup
connection to my ISP.

My problems revolve around getting the iMac to behave on the network. I
have been able to use the PowerBook to connect to the base station and
successfully access the ISP etc. I successfully used the Airport Admin
utility on the PowerBook to set everything up and can connect/disconnect via
Internet connect. The iMac shows a strong Airport signal in both the
Airport application dialogue box and on the Control Strip, but it tells me
that it is connected to the network via Ethernet which it clearly is not!

I can connect to the internet from the iMac when I launch IE, but and there
is no connect/disconnect button to control the connection (the turn Airport
on/off button, will not disconnect the modem, nor does quitting IE or
shutting down the iMac). The only way to disconnect the iMac is to boot the
PowerBook up and use Internet Connect to disconnect, or turn the base
station off which sort of defeats the purpose a bit!. I have not been
able to access the base station from the iMac via Airport Admin Utility
the utility cannot find the base station, and won¹t accept the correct
password when I browse for the base station (although it provides me with
the base station IP address - 10.0.1.1).

I have followed all the setup instructions, used the setup assistants,
zapped several prams, reset the base station, trashed preferences, done a
clean install of OS 9.1 on the iMac. The easy option might be to upgrade
the iMac to OSX, but I want to keep OS 9 on it for scanning and printing
purposes, and my wife is only just getting the hang of it after some nasty
experiences with PCs!

I have a suspicion I must be doing something fundamentally dim, but I can¹t
work it out! Can anyone help PLEASE??

Sluggish Word X

Hi all

I¹m relatively new to the world of OSX, and am enjoying learning more as I

is much more sluggish in OSX than it used to be under OS9. The slowness is
especially noticeable in scrolling, cutting and pasting and usually quick
formatting tasks such as inserting bullets etc. I use a mouse with a scroll

couple of seconds for the page to move. I have noticed that the situation
gets worse when I am working with larger documents

Has anyone got any ideas for speeding things up?

Powerbook stand?

2003-01-31 Thread Neil Blake & Associates
Hi fellow WAMUGgers

Just read an interesting piece in TidBits about a new Powerbook/iBook stand
which effectively stands the Power/iBook almost vertical thus creating more
space and placing the screen at eye level (you obviously need to use an
external keyboard!). The reviewer of this piece couldn¹t get hold of the
new stand and so tried a standard document stand in its place, with good
results.

I¹ve just tried the same trick with my Powerbook on a document stand, and
with a bit of adjustment and a safety restraint to stop it falling over if

The only question in my mind is whether the CD/DVD drive may not operate as
it should through being at such an angle. Can anyone with more technical
expertise comment? Are there any other potential problems with this setup?

Blinking black shield on apple menu icon?

2002-05-24 Thread Neil Blake & Associates
Hi WAMUGers

I¹ve got a curious one for you. This afternoon I inserted a CD from Digital
Photo magazine into my iMac and after it loaded (it took a while), I noticed
a black shield icon with a white exclamation mark in it blinking alternately
with the apple menu icon (in the same way as the remote access icon blinks
when I¹m online). I¹d never seen this before, but it looked like the Norton
Anti-Virus shield in silhouette, so I immediately scanned the CD for
viruses, but found none. I checked the NAV literature - it is not one of
the alert icons they use, and I found no explanation there. Having just
backed up I was feeling brave, so proceeded to use the CD without problems.

I¹ve since restarted the Mac and the black shield icon has disappeared and I
can¹t get it to reappear by reinserting the CD in question. Such
unexplained phenomena unsettles me a bit has anyone come across this
before? I¹ve searched the archive with no success.

recognise the tables once I¹ve scanned them and put it through my OCR
software (an Epson based package, which is excellent on plain text). Am I
expecting too much of the package or can somebody suggest a way around this
problem? I¹ve trawled the archives with no success.

iMac DV+ 450, OS 9.1 using an Epson 1650 scanner with Epson OCRApp software.

Thanks in anticipation.

Neil

Blank iBook screen solution

2002-04-03 Thread Neil Blake & Associates
Dear WAMUG

Thanks to all that responded to my plea for help about a colleague¹s iBook
screen failing to power up. It seems the logic board died and has been
replaced under warranty, so all is now well.

Blank screen after installing OS X

2002-03-23 Thread Neil Blake & Associates
Hi ŒMuggers

A list colleague from Bunbury has rung in some distress because his new(ish)
iBook is refusing to boot up properly after installing OS X. He has rung me
to see if I can get some help from the list. The iBook will chime as per
usual at start up, but with no screen display. I have searched the archives
and found one message referring to a similar problem with an iBook and OSX
which was solved by zapping the PRAM, but unfortunately the iBook in
question also refuses to be zapped it won¹t chime any more than once.
Strangely, he can¹t open the CD drawer to try and boot from disc, so we are
a bit flummoxed. I¹m not familiar with the iBook or OSX, so my phone
ministrations have not been much help beyond the basic trouble shooting.

The machine is a new style iBook with 128MB RAM not sure of the processor
size which had been operating very happily on OS 9.

If anyone can help, I¹ll relay the info.

Cheers

Neil

Value of the archive

2002-03-08 Thread Neil Blake & Associates
Hi all

Just a quick good news story on the value of the WAMUG archive.

I¹ve been trying to open a CD of conference proceedings with no luck the
CD drives in my iMac, CD burner and old 5200CD refused to recognise the
disc, and asked me if I wanted to reformat it.

Trawled the archives and came upon the solution in a message from Œthe
pickle¹ (haven¹t heard from him for ages on the list?) - hold down
Command-Option-I while inserting the disc. Works a treat put it on your
list of emergency fixes.

On ya WAMUG

Cheers

Re slow formatting and printing in Word

2002-02-08 Thread Neil Blake & Associates
Hi WAMUGGERs

A small good news story!

I posted a query a couple of weeks back about Word 2001 being slow to carry
out certain formatting tasks and slow sending print jobs to the printer.
Having had a couple of helpful replies (trashing Word preferences, reducing
the font list etc), but no improvement in performance, I found the solution
today turn off Norton Antivirus. What a difference!

I¹m off to format everything in sight just because I can.

Cheers

Lighten up. Not everyone has your number of years experience with Macs,
your exquisite command of netiquette or your succinct turn of phrase in
composing messages.

I enjoy your rapier like comments on most occasions, but your comments today
run the risk of turning away first and sometime users of the list who may
not understand your role as unofficial guardian of list correctness.

Perhaps you'd like to put together a quick style guide on how to post
questions to the list? (This is a serious suggestion, Onno, not a bit of
backhanded sarcasm)

Slow formatting in Word

2002-01-24 Thread Neil Blake & Associates
Hi WAMUGGERs

I have a couple of problems with Word (Office 2001:Mac) taking a long time
to complete relatively simple formatting tasks like inserting a new table
(usually with only a few columns and lines) and inserting a bullet for the
first time. Word seems to go into freefall while the HD rattles away madly
in the background, often taking 10-15 seconds to do the job. I¹ve also
noticed the same delays happening when I go to print HD rattling away for
a while before the print dialogue box appears.

I¹ve tried some of the obvious fixes increase memory allocation, Office
2001 service pack upgrade with no success.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Neil

Re: lacie vs retrospect

David

I too have had trouble getting Retrospect Express to work with my burner,
despite having all the recent upgrades and trying different media. The only
difference in my case is that my burner is a Que!Fire machine, which in
every other respect is totally reliable. I've resorted to using Toast for
incremental backups.

I've tried contacting Dantz directly, but with no joy.

I would also be grateful if anyone can shed any light on this.

Cheers

Neil

Is it Yahoo?
