Scanner

2003-06-20 Thread Robert Loss

Fellow Mu-ers'
My 6 year old SCSI scanner finally had to go to the it graveyard today.
So - what's the best value for money scanner around these days?
Has to be useable on Macs and PCs but I presume USB will handle that.
Slide scanning capability would be nice but not essential.

Any info much appreciated - Cheer

Re: PDF documents , plugins and OSX from Macintouch

2003-05-04 Thread Robert Loss

I just tried it with IE and Safari - it Works good!

In Macintouch Sunday 4.5.03

Mac OS X users who want PDF documents to load directly into their
internet browsers know that Adobe's browser plug-in, "PDFViewer",
doesn't work, even with the latest 5.1 version of Acrobat Reader. (Yes,
when you click a PDF link, Reader5.1 will auto-start and load the linked
document, but this is slow and clunky, and leaves a downloaded copy of
the doc on your disk.)
The solution is Manfred Schubert's "PDF Browser Plugin 1.1.1".
He has one plug-in that works with Internet Explorer (72K download),
and another (192K download) that works with other browsers (I tested
with Navigator and Safari). Put the plug-in in your Library/Internet
Plug-ins/ folder and restart your browser. (In IE, you have to set your
"preferences: helpers" to use the plug-in for PDFs before restarting the

browser). The rendering is accurate and very fast.

Re: mobile data speeds - T68i

2003-04-25 Thread Robert Loss
During a fairly extensive bit of testing over the last few days I'm
getting a pretty consistent 32kbps with my [Optus] T68i - BT -
TiBook. - Bloody expensive though (2.2c/kb and 1.1 c/kb after hours)

What is the fastest mobile phone to transfer data?

I am sitting here on Rottnest working for a client with my Tibook and a
Nokia 6210

It is very slow.

I hate to think what the phone bill will be.

On the longevity of SOHO switches

2003-04-22 Thread Robert Loss
Greetings all, I just wondered if anyone with some longish term
experience with SOHO networks could comment on the pros and cons of
cheap SOHO switches. About 4 years I set up my home network using a
"brand name" 4-port switch, and an 8-port "budget" switch. The budget
switch lasted about 15 months, and its replacement (another budget
model) has just died. The 4-port is still going fine. Am I just
unlucky, or are these "budget" priced switches really only designed
to last until they are just out of warranty?

WACOM Mac ADB tablet to give away

2003-04-02 Thread Robert Loss
I have a Small Mac ADB WACOM tablet (purchased circa 1995 - hardly
ever used) to give away to a worthy cause. If you think you have a
good use for such a thing send me your sob stories and I'll award it
to whoever I think is going to make some use of it.

Cheers
