AppleWorks 6 & page setup

2008-10-08 Thread Mervyn & Giuliana Bond
After last night's success I opened AppleWorks and put in my
preferences. Bad move - Page Setup failed. By a process of
elimination I found the troublesome preference was Fractional
Character Widths. If I open one of my older documents in AppleWorks,
went to preferences, turn off Fractional Character Widths, click Make
Default and OK then all is well.
This is strange because I recall in earlier forums about pre-AWKs
6.2 that turning on Fractional Character Widths resolved a margins
problem. I never had the problem on the power PC, but it is
certainly there with intel with the opposite solution.

I think the problem identified below might have started when I
updated to 10.5.5 in mid-September.
Repairing permissions and removing com.apple.appleworks.plist from
the Users Library Preference folder was of no avail.
However, tonight I repeated the procedure but in addition removed
the contents of the AppleWorks folder from the same Preference
folder. Restarted, launched AppleWorks and Page Setup now works.

I can't remember when the problem with AppleWorks 6.2.9 started on
the iMac but here it is: I opened an existing document and then
selected Page Setup. Made my choice and clicked OK. The contents
of the document seemed to slip to the left and leave me with a dark
grey page. At the time I was using an OKIPage 8 printer that is on
my wife's iBook G4 on 10.4.11 power PC. There is no driver for the
OKI on intel. Assuming this was the problem I tried the same
procedure for the Epson Stylus C61 which has a driver on my
computer and is connected to my computer. Same result.
Thinking the existing document might be corrupted in some way I
tried a new document but got the same result.

Suggestions appreciated.
