On behalf of my son in Dubai
Hi folks, During the last couple of months on a couple of start ups he has got a black screen with what looks like computer code in white text down the left hand side. I think on each occasion he has re-started and it has been OK. Looks like a Kernel Panic ? He has a 27 inch iMac 2012 with the latest OS. However a few days ago he got this on every start up. So he went to the Dubai Apple Shop. They ran checks and said the hardware is fine but the issue is with the OS. So they reformatted the HD and re-installed the OS for him. When he got home he used Time Machine to recover his files. But he now thinks Time Machine re-installed the corrupt OS. Because the issue has returned. He is not at home in Dubai at the moment but will return home late tomorrow. He and I are unsure of the best procedure to follow to correct this issue. Because he is an Emirates Captain his emails and data are very important to his work. Although he also has a SuperDuper backup it is too far behind to be a viable source for his latest emails. Any suggestions of best procedure to follow would be gratefully appreciated. Re: Dubai
To add to David's comment, I was staying in a house in Dubai recently, and that hose was indeed a standard UK 3-pin house. However I bought a Time Capsule in Dubai last week, and it came fitted with the US 2-pin type, as in the one pictured here... http://img.alibaba.com/photo/52361009/European_standard_power_cords_with_two _pin_plug.jpg Maybe UK 3-pin is standard, but there is no requirement for goods imported to comply, so no-one bothers changing the plugs? Who knows. Cheers, Steven On 6/8/08 12:40 AM, "David Ring" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Walter, > > The wall sockets are standard UK 3 pin. > > David > > On 5 Aug 2008, at 18:05, F.W. Steven One would think that an 'unlocked phone' is an 'unlocked phone', but I really wouldn't like to say for sure that Optus's handy work will allow you to use the unit in Dubai. To ensure that you're not wasting your money, I'd suggest you discuss the options with a retail outlet once in Dubai. Yep. Any other SIM card. So long as you have the right air interface and frequency it should work. You may need to get an APN, username and password to get on the net with it but everything should work with the configuration in the carrier's SIM card. Re: Dubai
Steven I have a number of colleagues that successfully use their iPhone in Dubai, however prior to use they did need to get the unit unlocked. I understand that this may not be an option with the later versions of the iPhone software? As for sat nav, there are databases available for Dubai but I'm not sure what platforms they have been written for. Vehicles that have an integrated sat nav have their databases installed and updated at the vehicle service centre but as for stand alone units, you could try contacting companies such as Garmin to see if they can assist? It would definitely be worth further research though, especially as you get settled in. Finding your way around Dubai is challenging at the best of times! I've been hanging out for the iPhone to reach Australia, and when it does, I move somewhere else where the iPhone officially is not. Also, do you happen to use a sat nav whilst in Dubai? I have a TomTom but TomTom doesn't have a map for UAE apparently. Cheers, Steven On 10/7/08 12:33 PM, "Jane Griffiths" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Hi Alastair I didn't make myself very clear, sorry. Just going off on a rant here, but another thing that annoys me about prepaids is that I can't receive picture texts (are they MMS??) from international numbers. This is one of many questions I have for the iPhone carriers. I feel I need more time to understand the intricacies of the various carriers' plans. I only have a pre-paid telstra sim in an unlocked phone (for use overseas as well) at the moment and my mobile phone usage is very low, so only the lowest cost plans would be of interest to me. I notice that Optus offer an $80 unlocking of the iPhone on their pre- paid plan so that might be tempting. I will be going along to somewhere selling the iPhone tomorrow just to have a look at one, as I must be one of the few Apple fans that has actually never seen the real thing!
