It really depends on whether or not an application can create documents or not,
or more precisely, multiple windows. Th rules can appear to be a little
inconsistent sometimes, but this the general rule.

Note that Cmd-Option-Q means "Quit and close all windows", whereas the simpler
Cmd-Q quits the application, but any open windows are remembered, and opened
automatically the next time you run the application. It's also important to
understand that all of this only applies to Lion (Max OS X 10.7) and later. In
previous versions, quitting an application automatically closed all open
windows.

iTunes and others such as Preview, System Preferences, etc, do not support the
opening of multiple windows, so Cmd-Option-Q is not an option. Just use Cmd-Q.

Photoshop (and other Adobe fare), along with products from Microsoft, lives in
its own world, so many things that work in standard Mac OS X software do not
necessarily apply.

Re: Mac getting forgetful

2013-08-30 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Pat,

Not all Applications will respond to the same keyboard shortcut commands.

For example; iTunes 11 & iPhoto will NOT respond to "Command-Option-Q" to Quit,
they only will respond to "Command-Q".

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: Mac getting forgetful

2013-08-30 Thread Pat
I have been following Ronni's suggestion that I close applications with Command
Option Q (haven't had any more episodes of 'forgetfulness' by the Mac). I just
wanted to mention that there are a few applications that do not respond to that
command, namely iTunes and Photoshop CS6. Just another oddity, I guess.

Thanks for the help!

Re: Mac getting forgetful

2013-08-20 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Pat,

Last thing to try:
Before shutting down your Mac.
Instead of 'Command-Q' to quit an Application (which just Quits the App);
Click 'Command-Option-Q' - This will "Quit & Close all Windows" in the
Application.

See if that helps.
Cheers,
Ronni

Re: Mac getting forgetful

2013-08-20 Thread Pat
Hi, Ronni,

When closing down last night, I looked for the checkmark, but the box was not
ticked.

I guess I will just have to live with it. So far, it is just a little bit
annoying, but apparently not potentially calamitous. So, thank you very much,
Ronni and Daniel.

Cheers,
Pat

Hi, Ronni,

I usually do Command Q to quit an application, or sometimes right-clicking the
Dock icon and choosing 'Quit'. And I always cast an eye over the Dock icons to
be sure there are no longer any little white dots underneath.

In System Preferences, there are no Login items in Users & Groups.

In General, the box is ticked for Close windows when quitting an Application and
the Recent items is set at 10.

Thanks for your reply.

Mac getting forgetful

2013-08-17 Thread Pat
I close my Mac Pro, 10.8.4, down every night. Just before I shut it down, I
systematically close every open application. The last few months, when I start
the Mac up the next day, occasionally it comes up with all those applications
open, and it is now happening more frequently.

Is this a symptom of any know malady? Does anyone know what causes it? I do not
have any items in the Startupitems folder.
