I'd suggest look up the Apple service centres and then calling them to see

Check on your home and contents insurance. It's amazing how many of them do

Re: MacBook Pro water damage!!!

2011-12-30 Thread Roger Kortas
Hi Laura

The cost of a new motherboard is quite high so perhaps think about buying a
computer?

MacBook airs start just over $1000 & MacbookPros from around $1400 you could
then take the drive out of the old MBP and put it into an external case. Just
another thing to think about :

Best regards

Roger

Thank you Adrian. No, the MBP has not been anywhere near an aircraft in recent
times.

Thank you Stuart for your comments. According to the Apple techs the board has
been shorted which negates any efforts to dry it out.

Sadly no joy with household insurance.

I agree MacWorx are good. I once had a hard drive replaced there for far less
than other quotes. Being holiday time I suspect not much can happen with the
MBP until the New Year. Thanks for the offer of help but no plans to visit
Albany in the near future.

All advice is really appreciated.

h...oven, with 50 degrees you may kill a few things... a hair dryer
may do a job
if you can remove the main board check for the liquid spots & use isopropyl
alcohol (altronics - electronic shop) to wash it off & dry, check the
keyboard, a "sticky" (short through liquid) key can disrupt the functions
weird is you don't know how the ???water??? came into the macbook
are all the connectors (incl ram sockets) still ok?

Re: MacBook Pro water damage!!!

2011-12-28 Thread Daniel Kerr
Hi Laura

Sorry to hear that.
I'd try looking into House insurance cover first as you may find it's covered
there.
Secondly, I would think you'd find the Hard Drive should be fine. It shouldn't
really need "data recovery". It will just be a matter of taking the hard drive
out of the laptop and putting it either in an external case or transferring
everything from the "old" machine to the new one.
So I'd look at a) insurance first b) data second.
You'll be hard pressed to find a "Second hand" logic board fairly cheap I would
think (from experience).
But that would be my suggestions. :)
(Oh, MacWorx should be open, just pretty busy so takes a couple of calls
sometimes. Even I had to ring them 4 times to get through one day,..lol) ;)

Hope that helps.

Kind regards
Daniel

I concur with the desiccation approach only I would use silica gel (that might
be a pharmacy purchase, and if pink or anything other than blue when bought,
dry in an oven).

Apart from that Macs4U in Midland (great eastern highway) are pretty good, odd
opening hours but a phone call beforehand will help. 9274 7111

I had a similar situation years ago with a MacBook which was covered by my
insurance company under household items. The MacBook was replaced under
insurance. I got to keep the old one. I let it dry out for a week or two then
tried to restart and YES it did. Just needed to dry out! Do you have household
insurance ? If not let it dry out maybe with a 'little' assistance. Eg a warm
room.cheers Doug.

As a last resort try burying it in dry rice for few a few days to absorb
moisture if it is still wet. I've read that sometimes works for other
electronics. If too much damage is done tho it won't help.

MacBook Pro water damage!!!

2011-12-28 Thread Laura Webb
Good morning all

My son has a 17" MacBook Pro, purchased from Daniel in November last year.

MBPro 17" 2.53GHzi5/4GB/500GB/SD
Upgraded to 500GB 7200rpm Drive.
Upgraded to 8GB RAM

Yesterday at start up there was no screen. Peter phoned Apple (he has
Applecare) and they arranged for an appointment yesterday afternoon at the
Genius Bar in the Perth store. The sad news is that there is water damage,
obviously not something covered by Applecare.

How the water got into the computer is a complete mystery but that now becomes
irrelevant.

Peter is distraught. His MacBook Pro is part of his life. Apart from normal
usage he uses it to create his own music.

The diagnosis from the Genius Bar is that the logic boarded has shorted out.
The hard drive is apparently OK so that data recovery should be possible. Apple
will not even consider a repair and advised contacting NextByte. Peter did this
but they want money before even looking, even though there is already the Apple
report.

I suggested Peter contact MacWorx in Joondalup but they are not answering. No
doubt they are enjoying a well earned break at this time of the year.

Is it ever possible to obtain a second hand logic board? Is there a
recommendation as to where to go for Data Recovery? Is it a lost cause?

Any advice would be so much appreciated.

Best wishes to all
Laura
