Oops! Sorry Ronnie. Next time I'll read more carefully. I guess it's

Why are you punishing yourself so much with all of this? After all,
don't we use our Macs precisely in order to avoid all of this rubbish
(among other reasons, of course)?

Personally I won't let anything carrying the word Nortons in its
title anywhere near any of my computers. It's just asking for
trouble. You really need do no more than TURN ON the windows
firewall, and use a lightweight free virus removal tool such as
AVGFree from Grisom Software; and perhaps a decent spyware checker
(see below).

Presumably, you are using Parallels for only a few key Windows-based
applications, and if non of these use Internet access, you're pretty
much safe anyway. The principle cause of virus and other malware
infection on Windows is behaviour: the sites you visit, the email
messages you open, the attachments you download, the links you click
on. If you restrict these activities to the Mac side, the chance of
getting infections on Windows are reduced to almost nil. Of course,
you do need some sort of protection (Windows attracts some of this
stuff all by itself) but considering that in Parallels, Windows is
already sandboxed with your MacOS X framework, the risks are next to
nothing. Nortons Internet Security is heavy overkill, even on a real
Windows PC. It can also slow things down by up to as much as 10-15%.

Dump it, and use your Mac for the important stuff.

Hello Peter WAMUGers,

Why are you punishing yourself so much with all of this? After all,
don't we use our Macs precisely in order to avoid all of this
rubbish (among other reasons, of course)?

I 'punished' myself because against all my better judgement, and
always saying I would never have anything Microsoft on my Macs, I
chose to install 'Yuk WindowsXP' then 'Yuk Windows Vista' in
Parallels on my beautiful 'Pure MacBook Pro'.
Now that I have installed it, I wanted to make sure that 'Yuk
Windows' is not going to upset my MacBook Pro in anyway.
So after paying good dollars to purchase McAfee Internet Security
Suite 2007 had it installed working perfectly in WindowsXP, I
wanted it installed and working Perfectly in Windows Vista Ultimate.

Personally I won't let anything carrying the word Nortons in its
title anywhere near any of my computers. It's just asking for trouble.

Windows Firewall Security enhancements in Vista are improved to
WindowsXP . but, I don't trust Microsoft Windows, so therefore I
wanted the extra protection of another Internet Security Suite.

Presumably, you are using Parallels for only a few key Windows-
based applications, and if non of these use Internet access, you're
pretty much safe anyway.

I will be using Parallels for only a very few Windows-based
Investment financial applications, which do need to use Internet
Access.

I certainly will not be using email on Windows!

The principle cause of virus and other malware infection on Windows
is behaviour: the sites you visit, the email messages you open, the
attachments you download, the links you click on. If you restrict
these activities to the Mac side, the chance of getting infections

I totally agree with you Peter.
I am very security conscious even on my Macs, I probably have gone a
bit overboard with Security Protection on Windows Vista.

But I would prefer to be 'safer' then 'sorrier' ;-)

Dump it, and use your Mac for the important stuff.

I won't dump McAfee yet, I will dump Windows Vista when I can
find good Financial Investment Applications in Mac Format.

Thanks Peter for your comments, I agree with them, but I need to feel
as secure as possible when I'm using Windows in Parallels.

Hopefully McAfee will do the job.

Cheers,

Ronni

Hi WAMUGers,

I have the latest Parallels v3-5160 and had WindowsXP running with
McAfee Internet Security Suite 2007 installed, perfectly.

I then decided to erase WindowsXP VM and install Windows Vista
Ultimate in Parallels yep, everything went well and Vista was
working.
It is slower than WindowsXP and is heavy on CPU and my MacBook Pro
(2.4 GHz / 3GB/ 800MHz/ 160GB HD) runs hotter.

I then tried to install McAfee Internet Security Suite 2007 in
Vista . oh dear not a good idea.
It seemed to complete it's installation and then Vista asks to be
restarted, which I did . then all Hell broke loose, Vista
blocks

some startup items and then says it has a 'Critical Error' and will
shutdown.
But, It won't shutdown, it won't do anything I had to just
Quit

Parallels.

I downloaded McAfee Removal tool, but Vista would not stay working
for me to uninstall McAfee.
I eventually managed to start Vista Ultimate in Safe Mode was
able

to uninstall McAfee Internet Security Suite 2007.

Have you heard of anyone that has been able to install run McAfee
Internet Security Suite 2007 in Vista?
I understood it was compatible with Vista .. On the box I
notice

it does not mention Vista ;-(
I've searched and searched the Internet McAfee's support for an
answer, to no avail.
I think there must be an update for Vista, but I'm damned if I can
locate one.

Failing this, I guess I will have to install the 'Kaspersky
Internet

security' that Parallels has under its 'Actions' menu.
This of course will cost me more dollars!
Or else re-install WindowsXP in Parallels.

Thanks for any information regarding this, I will appreciate it as
always.
