Re: Another MacBook Pro problem

2011-05-10 Thread Adrian Skehan
Thanks Ronni an Patrick,

Yes I am sure that I got the correct drive in target mode, I was able to run
the Disk Utilities Disk Repair which said it appeared to be OK. Repairing
Permissions was a marathon. Having initiated it in the mid afternoon it was
still churning away when I went to bed at 11PM. unfortunately it made no
difference at all. At this stage I am resigned to doing a full OS reinstall.

Adrian, Are you sure you tried to install the combo onto your MBP System?

It might be worth trying this:

 1. After booting your MBP into Target Disk Mode connected via FW800 to
another computer running OS X 10.6.7
2, Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions on the MBP using Disk Utility on
 the Remote computer.
 3. Then install the 10.6.7 Combo Update on your MBP through the mounted
 volume.

No, reapplying the Combo update should hopefully get you back to how the
computer should have been if you didn’t run out of battery. When manually
installing the update make sure you select to install it on the Hard Drive
of the Macbook Pro connected via target disk mode, I think its a yellow
 icon.

Re: Another MacBook Pro problem

2011-05-09 Thread Neil Houghton

Hehe,

I'm just revisiting my genealogy and was reminded of the danger of assuming
age-generation correlations:

My oldest grandparent (born Feb 1869) was a good 37 years older than my
youngest grandparent (born Dec 1906) - though he outlived her by a few years
anyway - and, in fact, was born only 9 years after HER grandmother (my great
great grandmother).

Apologies for the off-topic digression - though I do use Reunion on my Mac
to keep track of it all ;o)

Cheers

Neil

Re: Another MacBook Pro problem

2011-05-09 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Adrian Patrick,

I don’t like coming in over another helper and what Patrick said should have
worked.

Adrian, Are you sure you tried to install the combo onto your MBP System?

It might be worth trying this:

1. After booting your MBP into Target Disk Mode connected via FW800 to another
computer running OS X 10.6.7
2, Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions on the MBP using Disk Utility on the
Remote computer.
3. Then install the 10.6.7 Combo Update on your MBP through the mounted volume.

Cheers,
Ronni

I thought that you are allowed an occasional senior moment when you have 3
great grandchildren and the only people you know older than ones self are
 siblings .

LOL. It's good to start early with your senior's moments. That way they
won't come as such a shock when you get to my age. :-)

 Cheers,
 Carlo

Senior moment. Its normally connected all the time but had used it away
from home the other day and hadn't put the plug back in on return.

 Hi Adrian,

I'm just curious to know why you didn't plug the MacBook Pro adapter in
when you noticed the battery was almost drained.

 Cheers,
 Carlo

 Good morning all,

Yesterday I ran the latest apple update (iPhoto and Font) on my iMac and
MacBook Pro, the iMac update went OK but I was called away before the
MacBook Pro (Intel OS 10.6.7) had finished so I left it running, on my
return I found that I had neglected to connect the external power to the
thing and the battery was all but totally discharged, when I tried to
shut it down I got endless error messages saying that certain files could
not be accessed (didn't think to write it down) and had to force the shut
down via the start button. the consequence of all this is that it wont
boot up past the grey screen and the ever rotating wheel.

Zapping the Pram had no effect.

 DiskWarrior 4.3 reported the following:
 • 5 files had a directory entry with an incorrect text encoding value
 that was repaired.
 • 5 folders had a directory entry with an incorrect custom icon flag that
 was repaired.
 • Incorrect values in the Volume Information were repaired.

A second DW scan came up with No Errors.

Booted ut holding down the Command and S keys. Ran the FSCK -FY this
 showed No Errors.

Checked the Volume Structure, File Structure and Surface Scan for bad
block using TechTools Pro 5.0.7, No Errors found.

Looking at it in Target mode everything looks to be in order.

Can anyone suggest something else I can try before I resort to
 reinstalling the system please.
