Re: How to access Skype password in Keychain ?
Thanks for the suggestion Robert, however the problem with going down Skype's 'forgot password' route is it send the new password details to the 'registered' email address, which is an old email address, no longer accessible, for this particular Skype account. I can't change the registered email address without knowing the existing password. Obviously the Skype application on the Mac knows the password because it logs in whenever Skype launches. Presumably the password is embedded in Keychain Access, but I don't know if there is a way to see application passwords in Keychain Access - surely an administrator of a Mac can do this somehow? Re: How to access Skype password in Keychain ?
Thanks Ronni. Unfortunately the Skype account in question falls into the first category, ie. never paid for any Skype feature. I have contacted Skype, but no joy, Skype quoting 'privacy reasons'. My argument was that if a user could change the Skype profile email address to a current email address it must mean that the person changing the profile email address has the Skype password, hence emailing the reset password details to the profile email address shouldn't be a problem, a point which Skype acknowledged but it couldn't help due to 'privacy reasons'. Basically a scripted answer which doesn't hold water. Based on the limited articles I've found on the web, it seems that Keychain Access doesn't actually store the password itself, it stores some kind of code which verifies the user to Skype, and then allows the log in to proceed. Something like that anyway. For any other Skype users out there, consider manually typing your Skype password into the 'Comments' section of the account in Keychain Access. Re: How to access Skype password in Keychain ?
Hi Steven, Skype does not store password directly. Instead it stores the encrypted hash of the password! The Skype server has a private key, and distributes that key's public counterpart with every copy of the software. As part of user registration, the user selects a desired username and password. Skype locally generates public and private keys. The private key and a hash of the password are stored as securely as possible on the user's computer (in Keychain). Then a 256-bit AES-encrypted session is established with the Skype server. The client creates a session key using its random number generator. The Skype server verifies that the selected username is unique and that follows Skype's naming rules. The server stores the username and a hash of the hash of the user's password [H(H(P))] in its database. The server now forms and signs an identity certificate for the username that binds the username, its verification key and the key identifier Sent from Ronni's iPad On 28/12/2010, at 11:52 PM, Steven Knowles emai...@knowles.net.au wrote: Thanks Ronni.
