I just rebuilt my late 2009 27" iMac with 3TB HD 250GB SSD and upped the RAM to
24GB - hoping to get a few more years out of it ;o)

I didn't find the process too daunting though, of course, you do have to take
care with leads and connectors etc.

I do believe it gets progressively harder the newer the iMac - mine had the
glass held on by magnets not adhesive tape, for example.

I find the OWC installation videos excellent - pick your specific model of iMac
and watch the video - that should give you a good idea if it is the sort of
thing you will personally be comfortable with.

Re: Memory Increase.

2018-07-23 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Tony, Peter, Michael, Susan,

“Up to a point RAM is of much greater importance. I.e. until you have enough
RAM, adding an SSD (or rather replacing a HDD with an SSD) will have little to
no effect.
You can have the fastest SSD on the planet, if your RAM is too small then your
machine would be slow.”

RAM and SSD (Storage) do two fundamentally different things.

RAM is the "working memory" of your computer, so it impacts how many concurrent
applications, operations and variables you can have at the same time. If you
will have many applications open at the same time (or even just several heavy
ones like Photoshop), then more RAM is a must.

Storage is literally how much data you can store / save. The advantage of an
SSD is that the amount of time it takes to retrieve the data from disk is much,
much lower than with a traditional hard drive. Therefore, you will notice a
difference in how quickly applications start up, load data etc with an SSD. If
you also need pure volume, use an SSD as the disk the OS is installed on, and
use a second regular hard drive for additional storage.

As everyone agrees, combine these together and your system will work better
overall.”

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: Memory Increase.

2018-07-22 Thread Susan Hastings
Replacing the hard drive with a SSD I would definitely be a good idea if you
want to extend the working life of the iMac. I think it would make more of a
difference to speed than the RAM, but increasing that as well is still a good
idea.

Just depends on how long you intend to keep using it.

Hi Tony,

An increase in memory is well worth while, so too is replacing the hard drive
with a solid state drive.

Cheers,

Yes, I think it is a cheap upgrade. I’ve done this to a number of MBP’s I have,
not sure how easy the retrofit is for an iMac though.

Hi Tony,

Increasing the memory should certainly be a benefit.
The iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) Model Identifier: iMac12,2
Maximum memory 16GB (Apple),
Memory Slots 4-204-pin PC3-10600 (1333MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM

Good Morning to one and all

As my iMac 27” late 2011, is getting on a bit, would there be any benefit in
increasing the memory?? At present the Computer still holds the original 4GB of
memory, there are two additional slots available for a further 4GB, just
wondering.
