Re: Posting to mailing list soon for WAMUG members only

2012-06-10 Thread Stuart Evans

Remember that people can still join the mailing list and get valuable
information for Free, even if it is not specific. I've gained valuable tips
reading posts from others who specialise in the use of Macs in various
industries or areas that I don't dabble in. The value in the $30 membership
is that you can post a question and get a personal answer from people that
have skilss and experience or maybe better "googling" skills. :-)

I know from experience that many people do not value IT support in the same
way they might get the value of a plumber coming out when you're laundry is
flooding. Oh, until they've lost everything off their hard driveand
don't have a backup

Nevertheless, $30 doesn't get you a lot in the world of IT/Computer support
on a once off occasion so a years worth of questions and answers is value
for money.

Cheers,
Stuart

Whilst I agree with all the points regarding the cost/benefit of membership,
one of the points Adrian made was regarding attending flesh ware, face to
face, meetings, BBQ's etc., and forgive my assumption Adrian, I think you
feel that a discounted membership should be given to people who don't want
to join in with the face to face meetings. I see the opposite.

If I recall correctly, the results of the survey indicated that the majority
of WAMUG list members did not attend face to face meetings, me included.
For me, WAMUG IS the mailing list, and $30 is a pretty reasonable fee. There
could be gold coin donation for face to face meetings help cover costs of
the bikkies. :-)

I dont have a problem with paying the $30 in fact I have felt a bit guilty for
years because I never got around to it before. I was only thinking of those
pensioners and the like who may be doing it a bit tough with the recent and
substantial increase in the cost of living. I daresay that if anyone is in
difficulty with it they will either drop out or plead their own case.

 Hi Adrian

I can't speak for the committee, but personally I think the set up
is actually pretty good for what is actually "supplied" for the
 WAMUG list.
They have two paid fees, the $30 member's fee and the $120
 "corporate" fee.
And I personally think the $30 is a bargain! Considering the
ongoing running costs to keep everything going from hosting, domain
name fees, server maintenance, list maintenance, support etc, let
alone all the free given time that the Committee itself puts in for
no reimbursement to keep it all running.
I doubt you'd find anywhere these days where $30 goes that far.
If you call Apple themselves for non Applecare queries, or a one
off query you're looking at $99 per incident! Even most places will
charge for email or phone support on a one off basis.
There's very little these days for free given the cost of living,
overheads and every day expenses. It's the nature of the world
 today unfortunately.
I know even Ronni pays her $30/year membership and i think she's
asked one query the whole time she's been on list!! lol :o) So
she's really paying to give the support! lol ;o)

I personally feel that just having the two fees is a lot easier to
look after and just makes it more simple given the nature of the
mailing list. And as mentioned, this really isn't that much for the
amount of help that is received. Realistically I don't think much
of the costings are used for non meeting attendees, well bar the
new indemnity insurance required unfortunately that WAMUG now
 requires.

Just my take on it. :o)

 Kind regards
 Daniel

 Hi Wamuggers,

After surveying the mailing list and discussing the matter at a
meeting, we have decided that as of the 1st July 2012, only WAMUG
members will be able to post to the WAMUG mailing list. Everyone
will still be able to read the list, but posting a question or a
response will require that you be a paid-up WAMUG member or a
life member. As most regular users of our list are already WAMUG
members in any case, most of you will not notice any change.

The move was a frequent suggestion of those who responded to our
survey and is part of the drive to give value to those who pay
the WAMUG subscription. Subscription is currently set at $30 per
year. As a non-profit organization, subscriptions are used to pay

If you are not currently a WAMUG member please pay your
subscription by the 1st of July if you wish to continue posting
to our list and to receive many other great member benefits that

Re: Posting to mailing list soon for WAMUG members only

2012-06-09 Thread Daniel Kerr
Hi Adrian

I can't speak for the committee, but personally I think the set up is actually
pretty good for what is actually "supplied" for the WAMUG list.
They have two paid fees, the $30 member's fee and the $120 "corporate" fee.
And I personally think the $30 is a bargain! Considering the ongoing running
costs to keep everything going from hosting, domain name fees, server
maintenance, list maintenance, support etc, let alone all the free given time
that the Committee itself puts in for no reimbursement to keep it all running.
I doubt you'd find anywhere these days where $30 goes that far.
If you call Apple themselves for non Applecare queries, or a one off query
you're looking at $99 per incident! Even most places will charge for email or
phone support on a one off basis.
There's very little these days for free given the cost of living, overheads and
every day expenses. It's the nature of the world today unfortunately.
I know even Ronni pays her $30/year membership and i think she's asked one
query the whole time she's been on list!! lol :o) So she's really paying to
give the support! lol ;o)

I personally feel that just having the two fees is a lot easier to look after
and just makes it more simple given the nature of the mailing list. And as
mentioned, this really isn't that much for the amount of help that is received.
Realistically I don't think much of the costings are used for non meeting
attendees, well bar the new indemnity insurance required unfortunately that
WAMUG now requires.

Just my take on it. :o)

Kind regards
Daniel

It would hearten me somewhat, should I pay my membership again this year, that
I receive some sort of receipt or acknowledgement of membership.

Re: Posting to mailing list soon for WAMUG members only

2012-06-08 Thread iCloud
Good morning all,

For some time now I have wondering if the committee has given any thought to
having an associate membership (for the want of a better term) with a reduced
fee that would allow elder members i.e. pensioners and others on a fixed income
or even those in more remote areas, to seek occasional assistance, I don't
think there would be many, if any, that would begrudge paying a fee for the
amazing help that is so often forthcoming on the list. I also think another
point that may be worth considering is that many of the aforementioned are not
able to attend the groups meetings or functions either at all or even
occasionally.

Adrian

 Hi Wamuggers,

After surveying the mailing list and discussing the matter at a meeting, we
have decided that as of the 1st July 2012, only WAMUG members will be able
to post to the WAMUG mailing list. Everyone will still be able to read the
list, but posting a question or a response will require that you be a
paid-up WAMUG member or a life member. As most regular users of our list
 are
already WAMUG members in any case, most of you will not notice any change.

The move was a frequent suggestion of those who responded to our survey and
is part of the drive to give value to those who pay the WAMUG subscription.
Subscription is currently set at $30 per year. As a non-profit
 organization,
subscriptions are used to pay for our web hosting, rental of venues and
insurance for meetings, and generally to keep WAMUG running.

If you are not currently a WAMUG member please pay your subscription by the
1st of July if you wish to continue posting to our list and to receive many
other great member benefits that we will be announcing soon. Details on how
to join are available at this link:

 http://www.wamug.org.au/join/

We have some exciting changes planned for this year and hope for your
 continued support of WAMUG.

 Thanks,
 WAMUG Committee

Joined up. Problem with the WAMUG name being too long so I abbreviated and it
