Re: Zip File.

2015-06-14 Thread Neil Houghton
Hi Tony,

I think it might be easier to just find another source of the manual!

Google shows lots of opportunities, though they mainly seem to be for a pdf
of the Owners manual which I presume you already have.

However -
<http://jameskbeard.com/Photography/LegacyCanonManuals.html>
has lots of info on old Canon cameras (including the T90) including museum
pages, owners manuals and repair manuals:
<http://jameskbeard.com/Photography/LegacyCanonManuals.html#RepairT>
includes 5 pdf links specifically to T90 repair information

Maybe you can find what you need here?

Re: Zip File.

2015-06-13 Thread clamshell
Hi, Tony,

Pardon me for sticking my beak in here. Some years ago, someone sent me a file
that he couldn’t open. It was from a good friend (he thought), so it was safe.
I tried every trick I could think of. The end result was that my Mac (mind you
it was a tangerine iMac) had quite a few files scrambled because the file
really was a virus of some sort. The exploit I remember best was that a file
called “Netscrap” was substituted for “Netscape”.

Perhaps best if you just ask the sender to send you the correct format.

Cheers,
Pat

Hi Neil,
Thank you for your reply. I have been unable to isolate the individual files,
but you are correct in the fact that there are other files 2 more I think.
Every time that I clicked on the Zip file it just appeared to create another

Thanks to you and Ronni for your help.

Re: Zip File.

2015-06-12 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Tony,

Yes, you can open zip files automatically by just double-click on the .zip file.
But you cannot open .exe files on a Mac.

A zip files is a container that holds other files inside... In this case the
zip file contains .exe files.
In Windows, .exe files are programs. When you double click on a .exe file,
that’s the instruction to Windows to run whatever program that .exe file
happens to be.

Apple computers cannot open .exe files because Windows and Mac OS have
different coding.

Ronni

To uncompress a zip archive, you just double-click it.
What happens or what message do you receive when you double-click the zip

Hi Severin,

Try asking them to change the .ews to .zip, I occasionally get files

Windows has generally relied upon third-party ZIP software (e.g.,
WinZIP, the old PKZIP, etc.). This in turns depends on what retailer
sells the PC (or what company the person works for) and whether the
person has installed their own. There are also multiple versions of
ZIP and presumably some non-standard versions too. Having said that,
.zip is generally a very good (best?) choice for sending archives to
Windows users. Perhaps someone else knows what happened with the 'ews'
issue.

Thanks Steve. I have now downloaded one of the files using Opera and
it unzips without the .cpgz extension being added. So, for me, it is
a problem with how Firefox handles things. Will let you know if I
discover how to open these files, otherwise I am going to have

Was your use of the term "Drop Stuff" a typo? Drop Stuff will create
only Stuffit archives, where as what you need is Drop Zip (from the
same company) which properly creates zip archives. Very few Windows
users would be aware of what a Stuffit archive is, let alone have a
copy of Stuffit Expander to open them.

I must say that I have never had any problems sending zip files to
Windows users, which have been created with the Finder's own Zip

I'll second that. I once used it reduce a PDF from around 30Mb to

Your right : about 1 Mb would be a maximum size I would have thought .
Some people have mailboxes that are only 10 MB or less , and they
need to receive other mail as well .

Why is it so big

Does it have photo's or the likes included ?
Can you downsize them before making them into PDF ?

It needs a significant shift to reduce size ... much more than a
compressor would achieve .

Re: Zip Drive - Click of Death Again

2006-04-21 Thread J Philippe Chaperon
Hi WAMUG'ers,

Sorry to hear about people experiencing the 'click of death' from Iomega Zip
drives. On the other hand I have been using very extensively Iomega Zip
drives, in fact I own 3 of them and used another 3 at my previous work for
many years (about 10 years now), without any problems. My original SCSI Zip
is still working on my old Performa 5400, and before that it was used on my
original Classic. Yes, that was many years ago.

I guess that failures do happen and with data, just like with money, never
put it in the same basket! Hence the importance of always backing up your
data on different media, and also keeping a copy 'off shore'.

FYI: gzip and zip are completely different despite their
similar-sounding names and overlapping applications.

This wouldn't lead to corrupt files, but could cause files to be
"unreadable" (e.g. a gzip file with a ".zip" extension might not
work, and a zip file with a ".gz" extension might not work). I
have never had any trouble with the gzip format. However, it can
only compress a single file. This is why it is often combined with
'tar'. I generally try to avoid ".zip" files because I have problems
with them. I think ".tar.gz" are UNIX- and Mac- friendly, whereas
".zip" is Windows-friendly (and confusing for ".tar.gz" users).

If we want to get to the bottom of the "corrupt ZIP" problem, them
people need to keep copies of their problematic files for further
analysis!

A different final file size doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong.
There are different compression "strengths" with zip, usually a
trade-off between CPU time and file size. Additionally, there is more
than one option for compression method, and different apps might have
different defaults.

These aren't actually the same thing. Gzip doesn't produce a zip file
(confusing, I know) but actually a single file that's been compressed
using (I think) the `deflate' encoding that's the most common one used
in zip files. It's the simplest, but it's not a actually a zip file and
some tools that know about zip files might not handle it.

It rather defeats the purpose of a universal(?) format if it is

If you typed in a file name like myzip.zip ie you put the .zip on, make
sure you saved it as a zip archive, someone sent me a tar archive with
the .zip on the end, took ages to open it (had to try all the different

Re: Zip files and Zip files?

2005-07-25 Thread James Devenish
A couple of thoughts:

 - There are some variations on the ZIP theme, but I wasn't aware of any
   generally compatibility problems these days.
 - Different operating systems (including commonplace ones like Mac OS
9, Mac OS X, UNIX/Linux, Windows) have different "allowable" sets of
filenames. E.g. Mac OS 9 and HFS cannot cope with ':' in a filename,
while UNIX can't cope with '/'. (And there isn't enough room to
enumerate how many characters are disallowed by DOS.) Perhaps, when
moving files between different operating systems, the various ZIP
programmes aren't quite smart enough to cope with this 'unforeseen'
   issue.

Is this problem with *all* ZIP files, or just one/some? If StuffIt
Expander encounters and invalid or unrecognised file, it sometimes
just does "nothing".

Re: FYI Re: Zip Disk Click of Death

2003-08-24 Thread Jo Brookes

I had some clicking when putting some 100mb zips into a 250 mg Drive.
I was told this was not a problem. The zips and the drive have worked fine
for a couple of years now.

http://www.iomega.com/ap/support/contact/phones.html

lists Iomega's support number as 2-8223 9140.

I have had 2 zip drive that had the true Click Of Death (COD) replaced no
problems/questions (not even asking for copy of reciept) despite being out
of warranty (one by almost 2 years) so they are (were?) very good about it

FYI:
as a long term big user of Zip drives and as tech support for similar
people I have had a great deal of experience with COD (Click Of Death)
drives and have found that around 90% of so called COD drives were actually
not actually COD'ing but rather exibiting other problems givving similar
symptoms.

First check that the drive works with newly purchased zip disks (literally
newly purchased not "only a few days/weeks ago")

If a disk is used in a genuine COD drive (that is one that has had it's
heads knocked askew/torn off/gummed up) it rips the edge of the disk
causing any other non COD drives to miss read the disk when trying to mount
it and they sound like they have the "caught the COD" - usually these
drives will then work fine BUT continued insertion of damaged disks in an
attempt to use them can damaged other ZIP drives and turn them in to COD
drives.

Also there is a separate fake COD issue with a micro-switch button inside
the drive that becomes misaligned and when the lever that is supposed to
press on to it (or is it no longer press on to it? - long time since I did
this) moves the switch moves slightly with the lever.

Another cause of fake COD where the lever its self (mentioned above) is
misaligned and some gentle prodding will assist it

I used to have some documentation on the ECU web site but I note that it
has gone

googleing has found these pages which cover much the same thing.

Re: Zip drive Click of Death

2003-08-24 Thread Paul Weaver
What is this problem you are having please? I have recently suspected that
the driver software for my Zip CD 650 has been causing crashes on my
machine. Using Sys 8.6
