Now, that is good to hear Michael. I’ve had too many people experiencing ‘dead'
Hard Drives lately and NOT having their Data backed up! It's depressing to say
the least.
I knew you would listen and heed the advice … after all it is your job, that’s
why you get paid the ‘Big Bucks’ … to listen, isn’t it ;-)

Well, sorta can ;-) You can ‘exclude’ files or folders from a backup.

Taken from SuperDuper User’s Guide page 20:
Excluding files or folders from a backup
Although we recommend that a backup include all of the files from the source
drive, it’s sometimes necessary – or desirable – to be more selective.
SuperDuper!’s Copy Scripts allow a user to easily customize the files and
folders that are copied, by simply building on the scripts we’ve provided.
Don’t worry, this isn’t programming: scripts are just a way of selecting files
and folders, and letting SuperDuper! know what to do with them.
With that in mind, let’s create a simple script that builds on the Backup – all
files script by doing everything it does, but – in addition – ignores the
Pictures folder for all users.
The first step is to choose File > New Copy Script: etc etc

If you don’t have a copy of SuperDuper User’s Guide, you can download it here.

Cheers,
Ronni

If by Office 2004 you mean you were using Entourage then no I don't think so
as Entourage keeps them all in a database that pretty much only it can open.
I would import them all into your new Outlook.
Once you are sure you also have a backup of the old stuff too, you have
already said that you do, you could remove the old database but I wouldn't
especially bother unless it was more than say a couple of GB.
It's all in ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office 2004 Identities/

You should be :-) Individual emails could be saved as PDF. Documents can go
straight onto a DVD.

That's just the software, more important is what you do with your old
database. If it fits, the Office 2004 Identities folder could go on a DVD.
If you wanted Outlook to import it later it could get it from that DVD.

Dunno ;-)

Good luck

Removing Microsoft Office

2011-01-31 Thread Michael Hawkins
I have Office 2004 and Office 2011 installed on my MacBook Pro (OS 10.6.6).

Many of my emails and other documents on my computer were created or
received using Office 2004.

I want to tidy my hard drive up, but because I frequently have to look at
old files I have the following concerns:

1. If I remove Office 2004 will I still be able to read the 2004 era files
(including emails and contacts details) by using Office 2011?

2. Can I backup documents and emails to a DVD and then delete them from the
hard-drive?

3. I assume I should make the backup copies before I remove Office 2004. Is
this necessary (Ronni please relax, I have made a backup using Time
Machine and another using SuperDuper already).

4. Can I use Super Duper to target a particular application or folder and
set it to backup only that application or folder?

Thank you,

Michael Hawkins.
