Re: Spotlight Search Problem

2011-06-12 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi Rick,

I’m pretty busy on Clients work, but a couple of quick questions.

Are you sure you have “Mail Messages” selected in Spotlight Preferences -
'Search Results’?

Also, you don’t have a “Previous System Folder” on your Computer which has an
older Mail Application in it?

Not a bad idea to Restart your computer and then “Repair Permissions”.

I’ll get back to you when I’m able.

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi Neil and all,

Well I remember too well Word Perfect which I used quite happily on my Mac
and on my then employer's DOS machines. Until MS decided to slowly strangle
this wonderful software, just like they strangled the Netscape browser, when
everyone went over to Word. That was the time when they were trying
desperately to strangle this little company called Apple

Well, the rest is history and the world keeps spinning around the Sun.

Many thanks for that link Neil, this will come in handy for my old ... very
old documents.

Kind regards to all,

WordPerfect Spotlight & QuickLook Plug-ins

2010-08-11 Thread Neil Houghton

One for the old-timers out there.

If you are like me you used to use Wordperfect on the Mac and, maybe, like
me you still have a bunch of old archived files kicking around.

I still keep the files because they have correspondence/faxes etc that I
(very) occasionally want to check back on. Since I left OS9/Classic behind,
I have played with various programs/approaches to read these - none were
particularly convenient.

However, I just found this, and gave it a go:

WordPerfect Spotlight & QuickLook Plug-ins
<http://homepage.mac.com/herr/>

I haven't checked the Spotlight side of it (it is not likely to be my
working method) but the Quicklook works great and is all I need - go to my
relevant archive folder, browse in Quicklook and refresh my memory on 10 to
20 yr old correspondence!

Probably not too interesting to most readers ;o) - but I know some of you
still remember when MS Word was not the most widely used word processor!

Re: Can Spotlight search a DVD

2010-08-04 Thread Michael Hawkins

Thank you James. I may have been trigger happy with my first request, as the
DVD contained over 5500 pages of documents and Spotlight might not have
indexed them when I made the first couple of attempts to search the DVd.

I was also confused by the fact that the Spotlight window referred to the
internal hard-drive and, in preferences, referred to folders and so on on
the drive, but did not refer to the dvd.

Regards,

Michael Hawkins.

Re: Google Australia/Spotlight

2009-09-25 Thread Glenn Nicholas

Stuart,

You need a neat (and free) Safari plugin called Glim - download and
install from here:
http://www.machangout.com/

Once installed, use Safari, Preferences and open the Glim tab, then
Add a new search engine Google AU using this setting:
http://www.google.com.au/search?q=#query#
(the #query# will be there for you)

All done, now you can select Google AU as your default search engine -
along with many other search engine options that are surprisingly
useful when available from the default Safari search field.

Spotlight - indexing external or networked Mac?

2009-07-10 Thread Metal Artwork Creations

Hi team

Can I force Spotlight to index another Mac within our office?

The two Macs are connected by a local wireless network, but I could
plug them into each-other via Firewire if that helps?
I've spent a few hours today scouring forums, but it seems it's not
possible with another Mac, only on external hard-drive volumes.
I can't find any software to download, and I'm not confident with
using Terminal.

In summary, one Mac has the files, but two Macs need to share and use
the same files during the day.

Thanks for your help.

If indexing is the problem, you force a rebuild by deleting the
existing (possibly corrupt) index. I've done this before, via the
command line: sudo mdutil -E /

Spotlight indexing - how to force?

2009-01-28 Thread Steven Knowles
I have a MacBook Pro and a MacBook, each of which can access a common
Dropbox folder. Both running latest version of Leopard.

Via Dropbox, each of the Macs can see particular folders if that
folder is navigated to.

However, on the MacBook, using Spotlight to search for the folder,
plus another couple of example folders, there is no result.

I've checked the Privacy tab within Spotlight preferences and no
problems there.

It seems that the MacBook hasn't indexed or something. I've checked
hard disk space on the MacBook - that seems adequate.

Is there any way to force a Mac to index? As far as I know indexing is
done on the fly, but maybe something has malfunctioned?

Any tips appreciated.

Cheers, Steven

For spotlight to index Office documents (ie Word, Excel) you need

Hi Stewart,

If you had low disk space when the file was modified or copied,
indexing may have been in deferral mode (and possibly never happened?
I'm not sure). Otherwise, I'm not sure.

Some people set their Spotlight preferences so that certain items are
excluded, but I guess that is not your situation.

Do you have Fast User Switching enabled? Once heard of someone who
"couldn't find a file" with Spotlight, but then found it in a folder,
and then "it appeared" in Spotlight. This was while logged into to a
second account using Fast User Switching.

1) Spotlight

http://osxdaily.com/2007/02/15/spotlight-wont-work-fix-a-broken-
spotlight-menu-with-these-troubleshooting-tips/

Lots of suggestions

The first one worked!

Solution #1: Kill SystemUIServer

* Launch ‘Activity Monitor’ (located in /Applications/Utilities/)
* Locate the process ‘SystemUIServer’, highlight it, and click
the red button “Quit Process”
* Within a few seconds the menubar will rebuild itself and often
Spotlight will magically work

2) Endnote Preferences

http://www.endnote.com/support/faqs/Install/faq27.asp#libmac

main problem was preferences are called things like Thomson Research
etc..not intuitive at all

Hi Edward,

Sounds like you might need to re-index.

From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
Click Spotlight.
Click the Privacy tab.
Drag a folder or even an entire volume (your hard drive) to the list.

Remove the item or volume you just added.
Spotlight will re-index the contents of the item you initially
dragged to the list.

Depending on how many and what kind of files you have it can take
upwards of an hour or two to re-index.

Perhaps this is to prevent your systems administrator from having you
arrested.

For performance and administration reasons, clients should not index
file servers. If an index is required, it would be preferable to
have it
generated on the file server (which is the only way to have a real-
time

index anyway). However, I'm sure that doing this for a cross-platform,
multi-user system is a complex issue because each client needs to get
their own "view" according to their access permissions. It would be
interesting if Mac OS X Server makes any attempt at this. I realise
that

there may be circumstances where it would be reasonable for clients to
do their own non real-time indexing of a file server, but this
would be

a matter of negotiation on a case-by-case basis. Other than that,
perhaps non-HFS+ volumes are not supported for Spotlight indexing?

Perhaps this is to prevent your systems administrator from having you
arrested.

For performance and administration reasons, clients should not index
file servers. If an index is required, it would be preferable to have it
generated on the file server (which is the only way to have a real-time
index anyway). However, I'm sure that doing this for a cross-platform,
multi-user system is a complex issue because each client needs to get
their own "view" according to their access permissions. It would be
interesting if Mac OS X Server makes any attempt at this. I realise that
there may be circumstances where it would be reasonable for clients to
do their own non real-time indexing of a file server, but this would be
a matter of negotiation on a case-by-case basis. Other than that,
perhaps non-HFS+ volumes are not supported for Spotlight indexing?

Indexing remote servers with Spotlight?

I can't find any option or preference that allows me to index an
external Win2K File server I often access ... would someone explain
it to me? (on /off list, I don't mind).
