Re: Telstra Or

2009-05-03 Thread Eugene

Hi Bob,

I was able to retain my old landline phone number.

The phone service behaves in the same way as the old one however you
get these free services (and other paid for optional services):

Calling line id blocking
Call Forwarding Always
Call Forwarding Busy
Call Forwarding No Answer
Call Forwarding Selective
Call Waiting
Do Not Disturb
Voice Mail Forward voice mail to email (I now get phone messages at
work!! I don't know if that is good or bad!)

I get free caller number display - I used to pay $6 per month for the
service.

 Eugene

Re: Telstra Or

2009-05-03 Thread David Wood

Hi Chris,

I also live just outside Dunsborough. My wife was "seduced" by a
telesales company working on behalf of Telstra last year and signed
up, having spent the previous 2 years very happy with Westnet. Within
a week we regretted the decision and then had a real fight on our
hands to get out of the deal/contract despite the prescribed "cooling
off period". Too many problems to note but essentially we have found
Westnet to offer the best service at the most competitive price thus
far. The problem in Dunsborough on speed related issues is the
exchange and the distance you maybe from that exchange. We are over
2kms away and this without a doubt has meant we get issues at times
with download speed. However, we are under the impression that
Telstra acknowledge the issue and that an upgrade to the exchange is
"imminent" whatever that may mean.

I have bigpond cable and have never had a problem, taking into account my
discount for bundled bill, and the "scout" leader discount, my shaped plan is
by far the cheapest I have seen and we have only got into the shaped end once
in the 5 or so years we have had it. The only downside (actually I think its an
upside) is the "free" wireless Motorola surfboard modem wont allow my son to
connect xbox live.

2009-05-03 Thread Reg Whitely

Hi Chris

They are based in South Oz and are very highly regarded. Have a look
at https://secure.internode.on.net/webtools/internode-dsl-finder to
see if they can provide access, then perhaps http://www.internode.on.net/products/broadband/

Let me know if you need more info.

I had heard that their Next G system is good for internet and mobile
coverage, as where we will be living is not covered by adsl, even
though it does have a land line (cant work that one out!). I would
dearly like not to have a land line but operate only on mobile and
wireless internet.

I'm with Internode and love it, but am not on an ADSL2+ plan, nor

Basically I get 1500/256 with 15GB download and all Internode
streaming music and ABC iView for ~$50 month. For that price
Telstra gives around 512 mB speed and less than 1GB download (from
memory - sorry haven't checked today). If I went to ADSL2+ here it
would cost me around $80 with Internode - not Naked - but not
guaranteed to give full speed potential it offers. At this point of
time I don't need it anyway.

Whirlpool is a great tool for comparison: http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/

Re: Telstra Or

2009-05-03 Thread Adrian Skehan
Well, I have come to the conclusion that its all done with smoke and
mirrors.

I was with Westnet for years when I found was continually being paired
well before the month was up so I switched to their ADSL/Phone plan
with a 1GB download and minimal charge for over-run. I thought this
was great but it wasn't long before my monthly account near doubled. I
tolerated this for many months and resisted frequent attractive offers
from Telstra to switch to them, however, as time progressed I found I
was plagued with frequent "drop outs" and having to re-boot the modem
to regain service. While Westnet Support were very helpful but unable
to rectify the problem, they concluded that there was a problem with
the land line, this was duly reported to Telstra and on my next
account I received a $95 charge for the privilege.

Enquiries revealed that Telstra said they were unable to find any
problems with the land line so it must be at my end, however, I could
not find anything amiss with my equipment (including the observation
that all 3 machines in the house were affected the same, trying
another modem and uninterrupted phone services), I managed to convince
Westnet of this with the result that they refunded the $95 for which I
was most grateful. The problem of outages, which ranged from multiple
daily occurrence in the main to, on rare occasions, up to 3
consecutive days uninterrupted service. Totally fed up with the
situation I eventually gave in to an offer from Telstra that was too
good to refuse and "lo and behold" I have not had an outage since
connecting with them.

Draw your own conclusions as to what may have caused my problems in
the first place and what fixed it in the end but I have a nasty taste
in my mouth at the moment and frankly I wouldn't believe anything that
any of them say from here on in. If you use the internet you are a
handy "CASH COW" for anyone who claims to provide any sort of service
associated with it. To my mind this especially applies to the big
players.

Adrian
