Soin other words, a decent UPS is vital if you're serious about
keeping your precious gear safe. I've used one for years and it has
paid for itself several times.

UPS is short for "uninterrupted power supply" the main thing they are used
for is for protecting your IT investment by in the event of a power failure

there are many different types that do varying different things. Some basic

They are usually large and a lot heavy as they contain large batteries. Most

it's now 2 years that i'm using a Uninteruptible Power Supply
it's a sola 750 which allows to run the mac for 30 min (or if i switch
off the monitor: 1h)
it saved me allready hundreds of dollar in "not lost work" and it's the
best way to protect your mac from lightning...i strongly suggest
to unplug the cable to the ups once a month und leave the mac running
for 30sec or some minutes to verify the backup batteries are working and
to prevent the "freeze" effect that appears in lead acid & nicad

Uninterruptible Power Supply.

When the power goes out it gives you a chance to save your work and
shut down the computer gracefully. Or if you're out, a good UPS will
tell your computer so that it can shut itself down.

I just had a look at the documentation for an APC 500 va I got a few
weeks ago. It comes with the necessary Windows/Mac software but for all
the features to work (like what your friend wants) he needs to be
running OS 9.0.4 or higher, but not OS X.

Of course the basic functions will work in any event.

Hello Gary,

The Sola brand is fairly good. The entry level ones and economically priced
they require no software and are made for home and small business users they
will give you an extra 5 to 20 min to shut down your computer safely
depending which model you are after.
I got mine from the AppleCentre at Joondalup and I am very happy with it.

UPS and Mac combo

2002-06-19 Thread Gary . Carroll
Hi,

An architect friend of mine who calls occasionally to ask pesky questions
called again last night.

He is looking for a UPS that will work with his Mac (currently a desktop 266
Mhz with OS 8.6). The idea is that the Mac should be able to communicate
with the UPS, and if the power goes down then the Mac should shutdown
gracefully.

He is using 8.6 as "stability" is the name of the game for him and this OS
works well with ArchiCAD.

Any ideas?

Gary
