A USB printer mystery

2011-08-05 Thread Severin Crisp
I have recently moved from a G5 to an iMac, which is a brilliant machine. A
bit of sorting out with my transferred items but now more or less sorted. One
odd quirk remains. I have an Epson R2880 printer and after the move over I
duly downloaded the Snow Leopard driver which is different from the Leopard
version on the G5. All installed in the usual way except that the printer
stubbornly came up as "offline". After much hair tearing and fiddling I
unplugged the printer from one of the four USB ports on the iMac and into a
USB2 hub, plugged in to one of the iMac ports, and which services a number of
other peripherals. The printer immediately came on line and printed fine. An
Epson 1290 printer works fine in any of the USB sockets on the iMac so the
sockets are fully functional. Returning the R2880 to the iMac direct USB and
it comes up offline again.
What on earth is going on here?!!!

Hi Merv,

1. You are sharing the Web & File Sharing with no problems?

I'm trying to remember back to Jaguar
2. On the iMac, have you got Appletalk on in both Network and
Directory Services - (Utilities > Directory Access > Appletalk)?

3. Is the Performa connected to the iMac with a Ethernet Crossover
Cable (not a patch cable)?

4. Can you print from this Printer if it is connected to the Performa?

Tom, I too would like to understand the mysteries of USB Printer
Sharing.

I have a blue clamshell ibook (9.2.2) and want to link it to a HP 1200
laser printer, and have my g3 bronze Powerbook (9.2.2) print to it
also. Reading MacHelp it says only that USB printer sharing can be done
if you are on a TCP/IP network (doesn't say it can't be done on an
appletalk network but doesn't say it can either). Is this true? If so,
how does one tell one has set up a TCP/IP network? MacHelp is anything
but. Can anyone direct me to references on how to share a USB printer
on a 9.2 ethernet based network? I couldn't get it to happen though
went through all the steps in the Help. No relevant refs turned up in
the Apple TIL either. TIA,
David

I've used USB printer sharing with a Brother HL-1240 and a number of
iMacs running Mac OS9.

This is what I did:
1. Setup the physical network. Each iMac had an ethernet cable that
went from the Mac to an ethernet hub/switch.
2. Setup the TCP/IP addresses. I allocated each computer an IP address
manually. Control Panels > TCP/IP. Select Configure Manually, IP
address 192.168.0.x (x is different for each machine, I started from 1
eg 1,2,3,4), subnet mask 255.255.255.0.

3. Connected the USB printer to one Mac.
4. Installed the driver for the printer on all Macs on the network.
5. On each computer I turned on USB printer sharing. Control Panels >
USB Printer Sharing. Start/Stop tab, click on "Start".
6. On the computer where the printer was connected, share the printer.
Control Panels > USB Printer Sharing. My Printers tab. Select the
checkbox next to the printer that should be displayed there.
7. On all the other computers, connected to the shared printer.
Control Panels > USB Printer Sharing. Network Printers tab. If the
shared printer isn't already there, click on Add to locate the printer
on the network.
8. On all computers, goto the chooser and select the printer. Apple
Menu > Chooser. When you select the printer icon in the chooser, it
should appear on the right hand side list of printers.

I know this is probably an abridged version of what you need to do.
I'm also sure there's a "HowTo" on the net somewhere, but if there
isn't, this might help.

Regards,
Paul.

Mine's an Ethernet connected via a switchbox.

I thought it was a matter of making the printer directly connected via its
USB cable appear on your desktop as a printer icon, and then migrate the
icon to other desktops

usb printer on 9.1/9.2 network

2004-05-11 Thread Tom Lewis
Hi ho,

I would appreciate any thoughts.

I have two imacs and a G3 on an ethernet. The G3 was running 8.6 and the
imacs 9.2. The G3 was printing nicely to a Xerox USB printer. I installed
9.1 on the G3 and now can't see a device in the Chooser RH window, although
I installed the printer drivers "USB generic" from the original printer
driver CD.

Checked the extensions by comparison from my backup System Folder on a CD
and did some restarts etc to no avail.

Tried turning on USB printer sharing but thought vaguely that this is
actually how you drive the common printer off the network - does it install
an icon on the desktop and one drag and drops to that from the remote
computers?

sharing a usb printer in 8.6

2004-01-30 Thread Mark Secker
I've found my self in a tough spot with a recommendation I made
regarding the purchase of a laser printer, not helped by the fact
that they told me they had a G4 running OS X (get there and it's a G3
running 8.5.something) and decided to skimp and buy the printer
WITHOUT an ethernet card.

They have a USB laser printer, a windows 2000 PC and the
aforementioned G3 and wish to share the printer between the 2 without
hot swapping the cable.

Sharing the printer on Win 2000 creates an SMB printer share that in
OSX can be seen and hooked up to but I can't see it through OS 8.6
(which they purchased years ago but never installed)

I need to know if there is any freeware that can be run on the
Win2000 box that will allow it to share the printer via TCP/IP LPR
(TCP/IP line printer) or if there is freeware that will allow a Mac
OS 8.6 box to connect to an SMB shared printer... the emphasis is on
"FREEWARE" as they will not spend sub even the $100 for an ethernet
adaptor for the printer they are unlikely to approve something like
Throsby's "Dave" software :(

thanks in advance :)

running a USB printer off an Ethernet?

2003-10-19 Thread Tom Lewis
List members:

I have a G3 (OS 8.6) and two original model imacs (9.2).

I also have a Xerox twin USB port printer, which i used to run off the G3
and one imac. I upgraded my original imac's OS to 9.2 to match the newer
imac recently acquired and find that apparently 9.2 won't support the USB
printer.

I was thinking of acquiring some sort of Ethernet hub to link all three
computers.

Does anyone know if you can buy such a thing and hang a USB printer off it?
