Hi All!

Dan K is right - there is a small fan located underneath the CRT assembly
that blows air directly onto the processor. It is only a small one, but is
noticeable when you sit a tray load next to a slot load.

As for the intermittent shutdowns, there are 2 boards that may be causing
the problem - power board or analog board. Most of the power related
problems stem from the analog board failing (which was/is quite common on
the 333s). For a replacement analogue board and labour, you would roughly
be looking at $400 (my guess, not accurate!).

Now is the time to consider either continually servicing this machine out of
warranty, or buying a new one. I remember getting a 1710 Applevision
monitor fixed 3 times. The total money I paid would have bought me a brand
new 17" Studio Display!

Considering how cheap eMacs are now, I would seriously look at selling off
the iMac and upgrading. The 'wow' factor of using a new machine running all
of the cool stuff swayed me from sticking to old stuff!

I had this happen to my iMac too. I discovered that the power cord had
worked it's way loose, and so the machine just appeared to go dead. I
pushed the cord back in, and the problem went away. Check the power
cord?

I remember the iMac being quiet thanks to its lack of fan noise.

The eMac on the other hand is a different matter!

Just to clarify a point,...I am pretty certain that the iMac 233 through to
the 333Mhz did indeed have a fan. It wasn't until the 350MHz/400MHz onwards
that they went to the convection cooling models. (This is why if you look at
the 233/266 they don't have air holes near the handle whereas the later
models did.

I know it doesn't solve the problem,..but just thought I'd mention it.

The CRT iMac's do not have a fan, it is cooled by convection, hence all the
"air" that can be seen inside the coloured shell and all the holes in the
plastic shell.

However it does sound suspiciously like overheating doesn't it!

Are you using the machine in a warm room? Is there anyway to get it running
in a cool environment to test the theory. Perhaps an internal hardware
component is getting too hot and cutting out.

I'm thinking power supply - do the bus powered USB/FW devices lose power
also?

Or maybe something else??

I'm starting to think the human body is easier to understand!

iMac 333 shuts down without warning

2003-10-29 Thread Sue Oliver
Hi folks

Have twice now had my 333 shut down as though plug pulled after approx two
hours. All peripherals remain on. Once shut down will not power up again for
long time - usually left until next day. Any help please?

My thoughts: Is it overheating? m/c now approx 4 yrs old is there a fan
inside which could have gone? Or could my HD be so full it throws a wobbly
but then that does not seem to explain the no power up for ages.

For Daniel K - methinks the time has cometh?

ta muchly in advance
