Re: iPhone Ap - Marine nav and Tides - will it work without phone coverage???

2010-01-11 Thread Tim Law
I agree re turning on Airplane mode as my 3G iPhone stopped receiving any
GPS signal when I tried this option.

15 minutes for acquisition is far too long compared to up to a couple of
minutes for my Garmin dedicated GPS and my HP iPaq Travel Companion with
built in Tom Tom.

I will let you know how I go when hiking in the forest assuming I return
safely!! The plan is to walk from Pemberton the 55km to Northcliffe over the
weekend when it will only be a few degrees cooler there than in Perth.
Eeek!

Cheers
Tim

Thanks TimI have GPS Lite.Let me know how you go.It's all confusing - GPS or Assisted GPS utilizing phone towers. The FAQs for GPS  seem to suggest that you can still use the ap out of phone coverage, but it may take up to 15 mins to acquire satellite signal:I also read that you can't simulate this by turning Airplane Mode on, because it not only block phone reception but also GPS reception."The 3G and 3GS iPhone™ uses an A-GPS (Assisted-GPS) chipset which uses cell tower triangulation to speed up GPS signal acquisition. Cellular coverage is not needed to acquire a signal, however the signal acquisition will be much quicker if you have data coverage. Without data services, it can take 15 minutes or longer to acquire a signal. This is simply because it takes longer to determine which satellites to use out of the 31 available around the world. With data services, it typically takes under a minute, but can take up to 5 min. You do need data services or WiFi if you want to share your waypoints/tracks via email or view a waypoint in Google Maps."cheersRodOn 11/01/2010, at 7:22 AM, Tim Law wrote:

Why this might be relevant to you, is that your app may either store the worldwide calculations and data in the iPhone and use the inbuilt GPS to produce viewable data no matter where you are, OR, it may cache them once you have gone looking at the area from afar and whilst in network range allowing you to re-view it later.   Either way, it does appear these apps are useful away from normal coverage.

Gidday WAMUGers
Navonics Marine Australia is an ap on the itunes store.
It seems to suggest it will work WITHOUT phone coverage.
eg i could use it to determine tides and mark spots, get coordinates etc in faraway places like north/south of Broome whilst outside of phone coverage.
Is this possible or have I misinterpreted??
Thanks for your advice
cheers

Hello Rod,

I cannot help you with that particular app, but I have just purchased GPS by
MotionX which I intend to play with in Pemberton next weekend. I don¹t have
Optus coverage in Pemberton or out on the tracks, so I have downloaded some
of their own maps that are stored on the iPhone and I will see if the app
works as it should away from wifi and mobile signals. It allowed me to
upload some waypoints I created too, which is handy.

Why this might be relevant to you, is that your app may either store the
worldwide calculations and data in the iPhone and use the inbuilt GPS to
produce viewable data no matter where you are, OR, it may cache them once
you have gone looking at the area from afar and whilst in network range
allowing you to re-view it later. Either way, it does appear these apps
are useful away from normal coverage.

Hi Blitto,

I guess it uses GPS positioning to determine location.
